Matchbox - Rockville
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
A titan of a space, Rockville was modeled after a hunting lodge yet still manages to feel cozy.
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.

I sat outside to enjoy the warm weather since inside it does tend to be fairly noisy during busy times, FYI. If you sign up with the Matchbox rewards program you get $10 off your first visit, definitely a great perk! The unlimited brunch was delicious, but the restaurant had run out of peach nectar for the bellini's so that was SUPER disappointing. Our server was extremely polite and friendly but was unfortunately very forgetful and took too long to get certain things my table requested (napkins, ample silverware, refills on water etc.) Overall, i would definitely go again.
always love matchbox .... not sure that the brunch was the best value but it was fun to sample the offerings.
We enjoy the restaurant but service was really slow this night. It took 17 minutes for the waiter to finally get to our table. There are lots of options on Rockville Pike, I hope service is better next time?
For brunchbox @ $31 a head...Delicious: brunch pizza, fried mac & cheese thingy, chicken & grits, sliders & onion straws. Stale/room temp/unappetizing/unedible: whatever was on nachos, fried chick & waffle - chicken was a tender & mine overcooked while waffle was nothing special, cinnamon roll unedible. Fruit & yogurt parfait was watery with barely any granola. I expect a brunch to provide a menu in which everything I choose is delectable as are other local ones in the area. Won't brunch here again.
The quality of the food ordered for lunch was poor. Two small pizzas dry and overcooked with charred crust and shriveled up pepperoni. Service was fine but food has really deteriorated here over the last few years.
Always a fav local spot for a bite. Matchbox has a new menu with more pasta options and some exciting new pizza combinations. We had a half crispy pork belly, half jumbo lump crab and corn pizza, it was delicious! Also really enjoyed a couple of Bourbon Crisp cocktails!
Horrible, slow service. Food had no taste & very little chicken in my salad and my husband’s chicken sandwich.
Lots of pizza options for kids.
Filet was undercooked then came back charred.
Service was fine.
Get food and atmosphere!!! Service was excellent. Can’t wait to go again.
Mothers’ Day dinner
Great restaurant for special occasion or nice night out.
What a wonderful Mother’s Day lunch. Our server was fantastic!
We were a party of 15 people and she took care of us all in a delightful manner.
very fun place and lots of food options
we went on mothers day - so extra busy ofcourse— would go back!!!
Terrible experience. Took my mom for brunch on mother’s day. There’s a 2 hour time limit. We didn’t get our first round of food (small plates) until 55 min of just sitting there waiting. After 45 min we asked for the manager. He made us wait 7 min and brought over donuts to our table, as if that would make everything better. We didn’t want donuts, we wanted our food. Then the food came cold, and the French Toast was hard as a rock. The next round of food came 35 min after. Overall bad experience and we won’t be coming back.
It was my mother’s day dinner - enjoyed it very much.
Wonderful service, food, atmosphere, and cleanliness of facilities!
We LOVE this place. The food is exceptional. Service is great and the best part is our kids love it.
Mother’s Day brunch, but brunch menu got smaller, food came out very slow, and food was unimpressive.
We took the moms out for Mother's Day. I was the only one who had been before and everyone enjoyed themselves. The food was outstanding.
Overall good as usual. The calamari came with blue cheese dressing which was obviously wrong on a couple levels. I told the server when I ordered that is be using my $10 off $40 promotion, and showed her my email from matchbox, but she still brought my check with no discount.
I ordered the corn and crab pizza which was not that great. Taste was ok but it was lacking the only three ingredients on the pizza. I was not impressed!
On this day the restaurant was a little smokey from the pizza wood burning oven. This could happen because it was raining outside and the air was heavy and the smoke was having difficulty leaving the oven. So, we asked to move to another area where the smokey small was less offensive. All in all it all worked out.
Nice atmosphere and friendly service with good menu options.
Our evening was great except for the cream of crab soup which wasn’t good at all. We told one of the staff members who stopped by our table to ask if everything was ok. My husband pointed out that there were clumps in the soup which made it look like it had been sitting all day. He said he would let the chef know and cane back to our table to say that he took care of it. I neglected to really check the bill before we left, the next day when I looked at the receipt that was in my purse I saw we paid for it anyway!!!
Food is over priced for the quality of food. Should have gone to domino's for a pizza
The food was small portioned for the price and just alright. My pasta was good but the other two in the party had poor meals. The Caesar salad/dressing was not good, and the shrimp and grits was tiny and 23 bucks. Not worth it.
We had a team lunch at Matchbox. Variety of food and flavor is a reason we return. All in the party had a great experience. Ashley, our server went above and beyond !
For what seemed like a slow night the service level left a lot to be desired. As an example, we were there for approx 2 hrs 15 min and not once was our water glasses refilled. The food quality was good.
Horrible service. Two of us were served, had to wait 30 minutes for other 2 meals. Food mediocre.
Would not return
We were there to celebrate a friends birthday. Dinner was good. Our server was not very professional. We ordered our first drink and that came within reason. We ordered a second drink and it took a long time. We asked about it and he said he would check on it. He came back to another table after awhile and tried walking right by us and avoided telling us when are drinks would be out. We had to stop he and then he came back in awhile with drinks. He needs to learn how to please people. All he had to do his stop and tell us he either forgot or the bar is behind. Don't just pass us by like we didn't matter. I have been coming to Match Box for a long time.
Very disappointed not worth the price.
We arrived with a 12:45pm reservation. We were taken to a table so we asked for a booth. There were several available. The hostess (Valley is the name she gave me) said the booths were for people with reservations. I reminded her that we had a reservation. She left and later the manager (Carla is the name I was reluctantly given after being told her name was Steven and questioning it) came up to talk to us. Carla stated the booth was for a group of 6 and they couldn’t be seated elsewhere, although there were several tables available that could have accommodated their needs. We decided to stick with the table. There were 3 of us. She gave us 1 menu to share. The menu turned out to be incorrect for brunch. The booth in question, along with several others remained open until we left 2 hours later. I can understand more if the party was coming within the hour. Holding a table for 2 hours is not ok nor is being rude about it.
Our server (Natasha) was cold at first and we had to ask her to come assist us. She eventually improved.
I’ve been to Matchbox on numerous occasions. This is the first time I’ve had such horrible service.
Very good food and service for brunch.
It's been a while since I visited Matchbox, so I was eager to have lunch here with friends. The ambience is always nice and the service was great (thanks Natasha!). I went with a group of 6 and we had plenty of room at our table. The food and drinks were good, specifically the lemon drops (martini) and cream of crab soup. I was a little disappointed in the salmon dish as my piece of salmon was rather small for the price. The quality of the fish was great! Just wanted a bigger piece. I will definitely return and recommend Matchbox in Rockville to family and friends.
Just want to caveat this review as being for their brunch option and not the typical lunch/dinner service at Matchbox. We went with our two (young) kids and everything started out well, but went down hill from there. We put in the kids' orders first to try and get them going, but they never came, even after we repeatedly followed up with our server and other members of the staff. We saw several instances where our exact order came near our table, but was then given to another table. Granted, they may have ordered some of the same items, but we were seated and ordered far ahead of the table's around us and saw them turn away certain items on multiple occasions. Our orders came, as did additional items that we put in to just try and get the kids something to eat, long before our initial order which finally arrive ~45min after we put it in.
I will say that the staff was very apologetic and the manager did the right thing in discounting our bill, but it was a really rough visit. We enjoy Matchbox, but I can't see us visiting them again for brunch and wouldn't recommend it to others.
Matchbox is in an easy to find location and has outdoor seating, if desired. Well known for pizza, there's also a good selection of burgers, snacks and salads. The salads are fresh and tasty. Service is very good with friendly servers and fast delivery of food
Ordered veggie linguine. Was sick for the rest of the day.
Matchbox has lost something off of its fastball. It has been consistently "meh" the last three times that we've been there. Some quick research shows that Thompson Hospitality Corp., a large Northern Virginia food service and restaurant company, acquired a stake in Matchbox Food Group about a year ago, and has been operating the restaurant since then. They were able to accommodate a moderately-sized party at the last minute, so that was nice. But the food just isn't as good as it was a year ago. The curse that has been on this site on Rockville Pike may have finally caught up to Matchbox.
Spent Easter at Matchbox because it was also my daughter’s birthday and this was her pick! Delicious pizza and the best burgers! We always enjoy both by getting the mini burgers as an appetizer. And... don’t forget the onion straws... yum!! The only downside is that it can be pretty noisy - which makes it difficult to hear conversation among your own party; but if you know to expect that, you just speak a little louder yourself. We will definitely be back!!
A very nice dinner. Moved to a quieter table due to some loud groups in the back room and it was much better.
