Matchbox - Rockville
A comfortable fireplace fills the space, as well as two wood-fired ovens that churn out thin-crust pizzas in minutes. With two outdoor patios and the private 30-seat Congressional Room, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.
The best seat in the house may be the elevated mezzanine, but everyone is treated to soaring views of the glowing wood wall, reclaimed from a New York State barn built in the early 1900’s.
Below, the bar hints at its former life as a Douglas fir, once suspended up in the 25-foot ceiling. Outside, the shaded fire pit bar is an ideal spot for drinks for you and thirteen of your friends.
Exposed pipes, warm reclaimed timber walls, cool concrete and steel make for an attractive place to gather.

Our children and grandchildren were visiting and this was a nice place to enjoy a meal together. Having some vegetarian options was a plus since 3 in the party are vegetarians. Variety of options was a big plus for a group of 8. We had been before but no one else in the party had been there. Sharing pizza was a great option. Service was fine.
Extremely loud for a Sunday brunch. Otherwise it was great.
The pizza was delicious 😋. Our waiter was very good about finding a gluten free dessert for my daughter.
Server was wonderful. Food very good. We had a party of 4 celebrating a birthday. Everything was wonderful. But if I had to make a suggestion - it was very noisy, in the back large room, off of the bar. Very hard to hear and carry on a conversation with each other as all the tables were full.
Very bad service, even after talking with management
Our server was extremely nice and very attentive.
Went for Brunch and most everything was overcooked or bland. Wouldn't recommend their brunch, but their pizza is still good.
Overall good again. We've frequented Matchbox several times for pizza, so this time we decided to switch it up. We ordered the bacon cheeseburger and the salad, and both were good enough. I think I'll stick with the pizza next time :) Great atmosphere and service as always... will be back!
I took my friend there for his birthday. We had a great time and I like my food. I will recommend it for a get together or date .
Great service. Good happy hour.
The food is not gluten friendly and very limited choices.
Too noisy; wrong lunch item served-ordered salmon salad and a salmon appetizer was brought to table
My wife and I both had a craving for burgers. That doesn’t happen too often. We went to Matchbox previously for pizza but implanted in my memory for some time was a great looking burger being transported to a table nearby. So, hence, the Matchbox choice to satisfy the urge. Satisfy they did. We both had the Bistro burger. It was cooked to perfection. Mine was medium rare and my wife had it medium. It came out as ordered and tasty and juicy as can be. Fries weren’t bad either. All in all a very worthwhile choice for the burger urge. Next time I will try some of their other offerings which are plenty. Steaks, seafood are on the menu along with a great selection of pizza options. Enjoy!
Service was excellent
We have enjoyed Matchbox-Rockville on multiple occasions; however this night was an exception. Our reservation was listed as a "no show" with Open Table, the service for the most part was poor, part of our order was incorrect and we had to request small plates, silverware and napkins. A big disappointment this time!
Have been enjoying Matchbox Rockville since they opened. They seem to have struggled to keep a consistent staff. When they first opened the entire wait staff was top drawer. That is the only negative I see. That said, there are still many wonderful employees. My favorite server is Stephanie. She is a reason to visit, herself. The food is consistent and good, though many of my personal favorites have left the menu. The pizza with its light and crispy crust is always great and they will customize to your hearts content.
I had dinner with my brother at matchbox in Rockville. We both ordered salads, which were good but not sensational. There were also a bit pricey for what was given but all in all had a pleasant time.
We sat at the bar and the bartender who was serving us was amazing.
Great family friendly place! Had great service!
We love this restaurant and atmosphere ! It’s esoecially good for large parties.
The service and ambiance were good. The food was not very good. My husband ordered a hamburger well done. It came out medium rare to rare. He didn't send it back because the first half was just pink inside which he can eat but the last quarter of it was rare. It was charred on the outside. Also the tomatoes on it were stewed tomatoes not sliced tomatoes which made it soggy. The burger itself was very greasy. We ordered 3 salads and 2 pizzas (plus the burger) for five adults. It was plenty of food. The pizza was okay but not great. The spicy pizza no longer has smoked gouda cheese so not as tasty. The caesar salad was huge pieces of lettuce instead of being chopped. The other two salads (spinach/salmon and apple/pear) were good. We hadn't been in a couple of years. We didn't love the place a couple of years ago but thought maybe it had improved. But unfortunately it has not. We will not return.
We had a great match box experience
Our first time here was for Father's Day. It was crowded and we had to wait in line for the hostess to show up. Once we arrived at our table we noticed marinara sauce on the cloth napkins. We were given an extra set of silverware after asking for it twice. We were offered a free appetizer for that mistake or for dining there the first time, I don't recall. The food was good not great but good for a brunch. We were given a $10 rewards points so that was nice and appreciated. We live pretty close by and decided to try what this place is known for: pizza. We ordered out like 2 times already in 2 weeks. I like the pizza. Know that it's flat and cooked in a brick oven. Service is okay but you can tell they try hard to correct mistakes so that's appreciated. Try it. It's bigger on the inside, by the way and can get loud. I wouldn't return on a holiday because it'll be way too busy for us. Any other time is fine.
Nothing too good or bad, just mediocre at best. Food wasn’t anything to brag about in my book book- had the Sunday brunch.
Sit outside if you can! The patio & bar are lively & far away enough that you don’t feel you’re sitting on Rockville Pike.
Food is ALWAYS good & the servers are knowledgeable & attentive.
food was good, as usual. predictable. chicken was crispy & potatoes were pretty good too.
Server was very friendly, when she came. but no one greeted us right away, then she came and took orders. took forever to get a drink--she said bar tender forgot us. then she seemed to roam around, but not really be available. don't need or want someone to hover around, but check in periodically to ask if we want anything, and for drinks to be delivered pretty quickly.
setting was nice & fairly quiet so enjoyed chance to talk and hear my partner.
We were frequent guests at Matchbox in Rockville. The location has gone downhill over the years. The food consistency has declined. And the service has consistently been terrible. On this particular visit, the server spilled water all over the table. Then just left because he was embarrassed. He sent another server to bring us new waters and dry the table off. Then he showed up and said he didn't want to show his face because he was so embarrassed. He finally came back after we were almost done eating and said he had a long day and was handing us over to another server. At that point, we just wanted the check. No apologies, just embarrassment. Not professional at all. Disappointed. Will really think before we return there.
Our Waiter "Manny" was outstanding! He was friendly and was well informed about the Menu and offered suggestions to our party. He was very attentive to our group and was humorous in his demeanor. Our Hostess assisted us in getting a group picture at the end of our visit. Thanks Matchbox!
Overall good value. Food is always very good, but the reception and service folks can be inconsistent and sometimes slow, even during non-peak hours. That said, it's still a very good value and enjoyable.
Went with a few friends to celebrate a birthday and had a wonderful time. Our waiter was wonderful and gave us great recommendations for food and drinks. Highly reccommend
I am a regular and the food is always great. We were offered a table in a dark corner of the bar area. We asked to change and the hostess was very rude so we made the best of it. The Bartender was also the waiter. Je tried but was not really able to offer adequate service. My wife had to go to the bar to get a drink refull.
I have been to this location many times, and the food is always great. I've only ever had on mix-up on food delivery over the years. However, this past time the service was terrible. I felt badly for the server, as she has no training whatsoever. Didn't know how to open a bottle of wine, didn't follow up after delivery of food, forgot about requests we made for pizza toppings (pepper flakes, cheese, etc.), didn't ask if anyone wanted coffee with their dessert (yes, she left the table before we could even tell her we did). I really call out the manager and management for putting her is that situation. We still tipped her well, as it really wasn't her fault. She had a great personality, but not a clue how to service a table.
We had to wait for drinks for over than 20 minutes . Then someone took the order and brought only a half of the order. Then a different person came and took the order again.
Margherita pizza was to die for. Pear apple salad was so good!
Though we had open table reservations, we had to wait 25 minutes past our time. Granted the restaurant was very busy. Service was terrible. We were basically ignored. We had to seek the help of other servers because ours was no where to be found. Service was beyond inattentive. Also, some of the food came out Luke warm, should have returned it but no server in sight. Overall not a good experience.
I would still (just barely) recommend Matchbox, but with a big caveat: Just because you make a reservation doesn't mean you'll get seated at that time. Twice now, we have been seated almost 30 minutes after our reservation time. You show up and say you have a reservation, and you're handed the same buzzer that everyone else gets, as you sit among 50 or more people waiting for tables. Granted, those of us with a reservation got buzzed within about 30 minutes, while others without a reservation were told it would be 45 minutes. BUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF TAKING RESERVATIONS IF YOU DON'T OR CAN'T HONOR THEM? We make reservations, particularly on weekend evenings, precisely because we don't want to wait so long for a table, particularly with children or elderly relatives. We will try Matchbox one more time. If this happens again, we will stop going and will no longer recommend it to friends. With a menu that's not terribly creative or unique and food that is fair-to-good at best, Matchbox isn't worth such uncertainty or a long wait. We have too many other good options in the Rockville-Bethesda-Silver Spring area to choose from that do honor their reservation times.
Breakfast Pizza needed Salt and pepper and was a little dry. Other than that it was good!
food is consistently good so we generally come back.
some concerns about this trip:
we got seated in the bar so it was louder than we'd like.
waiter was very nice & helpful, but he didn't speak loudly & seemed to be in a rush, so we had trouble hearing him a few times.
one of our drinks was terrible--not at all what was ordered, and much worse than first version of the same drink. was bad enough that I had to send it back, which I very rarely do.
Great service and fantastic food with friends! Every pizza we ordered from all meat to the more adventurous prosciutto and fig was simply delicious. The restaurant was warm due to the wood fire pizza ovens...just keep that in mind on hot summer days. Would definitely go again!
