Matchbox - Merrifield Ratings and Reviews
We visit this location a few times a year. It was packed so I'm glad we had reservations. The server mentioned that the menu had changed. I tried the ribs. The flavor was good, but they weren't very meaty and were a bit dry and tough. The coleslaw was very good, but the huge chunk of cornbread that came with it was the by far the best cornbread I ever had. I had to ask the server for wet wipes (because ribs are messy) and she brought me a full sized napkin in a hot bowl of water with a lemon. It would be easier and less cumbersome if the server could just leave a few wet wipes when the ribs are served.
We were seated in one of the booths right by the entrance to the kitchen. If you're concerned about noise and a lot of activity around you then you might want to request a table in another section. We'll be back. Please don't ever take that cornbread off the menu.
Mediocre at best
They lost our reservation and the three of us had to wait an hour to be seated. It was way too loud to be able to hear the waiter, and after only an hour there, my throat was raw from having to shout to my friends just across the table just to be heard.
Other than that, atmosphere was warm and cozy, and the pizza was good.
I was disappointed with our food - my daughter and I went for Brunch - I ordered the Eggs Benedict - the eggs were liquid, barely poached and the potatoes were cold - the breakfast pizza was bland - we wanted to order a Bellini or Mimosa but the lowest price was $20!
We’ve been to the London location and they were great! Had wonderful pizzas and margaritas - I will definitely go back to the Loudon location
New Year's Eve. Service was quick, really faster than we needed. Shortribs were disappointing though, very ordinary and not all that flavorful. New chef? Had them a while back with a Korean preparation that I remember as being very good. Friend's salmon also was plain, unmemorable. Generally like the place; might have been an off night.
They did no honor our reservation they way they should have. We checked in and were issued a pager while they prepared the table. 20 minutes later I checked in with the hostess and found they had overlooked our name on the list. We were seated immediately. If we hadn’t checked, how long would we have waited? Maybe not a big deal in the big scheme of things, but it did put a damper on the evening.
We’ve eaten at Matchbox about a half dozen times. The first time we ate there, we knew we had discovered a find. Great atmosphere and outstanding casual food! Your apple and pear salad with a honey vinaigrette dressing is one of our favorite salads in Northern Virginia. Keep up the good work.
This was my first happy hour experience at matchbox and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food. Particularly loved their calamaris & their special sauce that goes with it. Great happy hour bite specials overall. Maybe it was due to it being on a holiday week, but they clearly did not have adequate staff for the amount of people that were there. Not only the service super slow, but my manhattan was done incorrectly & had to send it back twice to get it right. Although they were courteous to comp the drink, I was not too happy about the price of it being higher than what our server said it would be had I paid for it.
Again, I want to stress that perhaps this was due to me & my guest going on a busier, holiday weekday as opposed to any other weeks. I would still recommend this restaurant to foodies.
Food was not great. We didn't order pizza, so maybe that's the house specialty. Crab cake sandwich and attendant fries were bland, mustard salmon was cooked well, but the accompanying potatoes, leeks, and kale we're undercooked and drowned in a lemon sauce that tasted fine with the potatoes and veggies, but really awful with the mustard salmon. Artichoke dip starter was runny and way too salty. Service was commendable, but doesn't make up for overpriced boring-to-bad food.
Consistently good food. Great service. Only place that I have found for good gluten-free crust for their brick oven pizzas. The fig and prosciutto is my favorite. My daughter and husband loves the 3-6-9 sliders. We went with the family this time, but I love to meet my husband at the bar after work for apps and a beer.
We have been to this restaurant twice and had a wonderful experience both times. The menu offers a nice variety of choices that satisfies our adult pallets as well as our kids. The short ribs are so good, even my kids loved them! The food and service was amazing. We would highly recommend this restaurant.
Our server was not very friendly and kept walking away before we could order anything else. Not sure if she’s new or was mad about a 3 table section. The waiter that had the table next to us seemed great with his tables. Will definitely ask to switch servers if we get her again. Will return
Relaxed environment with a menu full of comfort food. Our party of 5 all had wood for pizza and we all loved it. The crust was not too thin out doughy. We also shared a spinach artichoke dip which was good and came with crunchy warm bread. I just wish there was more dip. It does get loud but all restaurants are loud it seems. Also it you want to catch a movie before or after, the Mosaic movie theatre is just next door.
It's what you'd expect from a Matchbox (if you're. It familiar it's a brick oven pizza restaurant with a few other dishes they offer). This was probably my second time here and it's still a good place to meet up with friends, share some food and catch up. I reserved my table online with open table and am so glad I did. 7pm reservations on a Saturday with no fuss!! Thank you open table!!
We ended up waiting for about 15 mins for the rest of our party but the hostess had no problem seating my wife and I right away. We ended up reading and rereading the menu trying to figure out what we were going to get... not a great idea since i was already starving! I opted for an adult libation (patio pounder or whatever the lemonade watermelon vodka drink is called) it was quite tasty, but the watermelon wasn't very sweet (my own fault it is the end of November who gets watermelon?)
Our food order came out very quickly and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The rest of the party got pizzas (pepperoni and sausage and chicken pesto respectively) I opted to try the fried chicken sand which (Nashville hot of course) and while the chicken was incredibly juicy, tender and delicious what it lacked was any Nashville heat -_-. I asked the waiter if the correct sandwich was ordered and he said it was but later brought out the Nashville hot seasoning (which was just a ton of oil with some Cajun seasoning?) I tried to dip a piece of chicken into it to see how it tasted... it was a terrible idea it was just oily and greasy.
Maybe next time I'll just stick with pizza or try the grinder.
A cattlecall restaurant where they appear to be more interested in getting you in and out the door than in providing an enjoyable dining experience. Made a reservation but not only had to wait, but then they said that they didn't have a table for 5 but could put a chair at the end of our booth.
We usually love Matchbox, but not on this night. We had reservations for 4, and specified it was a birthday dinner, yet we were seated at a table in the bar. Needless to say, it was loud. I’m all for loud bars if it’s a birthday happy hour, but it wasn’t.
The service was okay, but not great. As for the food, the salmon citrus butter was disgustingly sweet, and the rest of our party said the ribs were “just okay,” the burger was great, and the Caesar salad was delicious. I’ve now learned to stick with pizza, burgers, and salads. That’s what Matchbox does best.
Our first visit to this location. Food was wonderful & restaurant was nicely laid outwith a young professional hip vibe. At the peak of the lunchtime crowd the noise level made it difficult to carry on a conversation with the person seated across the table from you. Did notice a back room nearer the restrooms where it would be quieter.
Happy to be back there with a great meal experience. I have eaten there a number of times and last time was a bit of a falter, but this time more than made up for the issue. We were able to sit at a quite table and have a substantive meal and business discussion with excellent service.
