Matchbox - Merrifield Ratings and Reviews
Horrible. From hostess to server to quality of food to overall experience. We were seated over 30 min after our reservation time and it was clearly due to a hostess blunder and boy did she have attitude. Salads were way overdressed, pizza was tasteless and one pizza was severely delayed due to a “quality” issue. No manager visited us to ask us about or apologize for the bad experience after it was made clear to the server that it was far from off to a good start. Will not return to this Matchbox, or any others for that matter.
Dined here as part of a group of five adults celebrating a birthday. First time at this restaurant. Waiter was nice, but not particularly good (couple of times brought only half the food and took too long to bring the other half). Food was okay, nothing to write home about. Overall, not very impressed and unlikely to visit this restaurant again in any location.
We came out of the movie theater next door, so ready for a yummy brunch. The place was very busy, clearly a popular choice amongst quite a few dining options close by. Started with a blackberry bellini. Delicious and a generous pour. Hubby had the “walk of shame” breakfast burrito which he really enjoyed. I had the cinnamon roll french toast, It tastes like it sounds, tasty but me too dense and heavy. Should have thought about that, I’m a brioche french toast gal. Service was prompt and friendly. We were seated next to a lively group that kept standing up, coming and going , and we could barely hear each other. But we have enjoyed eating here other times, many great options on the menu, attractive decor.
My husband and I wanted to try this place for awhile.
Luckily my son was going to a sleepover at a friends so- I booked on Opentable 2 days ahead- if try to book anything last minute for get it.
Walk in- hostess stated 10 mins to be seated- it was a full house.
Our server was very nice and helpful with the menu.
Apps- D ordered the simple salad yum but would loved some veggies but overall yum and myself Crab soup with Sherry- I could only finish half.
Entrees- We had shared a herb roasted chicken & margherita pizza- excellent & clean— but I would love have options for your sauce?
We were there because our daughter was celebrating her birthday with a large group of teenagers. My husband and I were seated separately in another area of the restaurant. Both servers were excellent and everyone enjoyed the food. For our purposes noise wasn’t a factor but would be if we had come for a quiet dinner or with our friends hoping to talk.
A great meal , everyone loved the food . My boys are extremely picky eaters and they are all of their food ( cheese pizza, pasta with cheese sauce, chicken tenders) , we had the rice balls which were amazing and a ricotta pizza with olives banana peppers and arugula . It was so good .
Too loud and tables are too close together. Food is decent but over priced. Seems to be the spot for families in Mosaic. Lots of young children at tables around us. Bouncing on booth seats and bumping into everything because the tables are packed in too tight. Not really the relaxing Friday evening meal I was hoping for...
Got a 32 dollar steak and fries that was over cooked, it was ok but I have had better and paid less. They have just changed their menu and lacked some of the cooler beer selection that I was looking forward to. Not that impressed with the menu change, but our server was fantastic and the wine he suggested was good. Not bad but not overly impressed.
We've eaten a number of times at Matchbox and as long as you don't need anything extra from your servers, it's fine. The food is always tasty, but I need some pepper and little salt for my salad and couldn't get my server to come back to us after we received our meal, in fact he didn't finish the service with us, another young woman came and cleaned up and presented our check to us. So the servers are good upon the first 5 minutes, but really fail and fade after the initial drink order and that has been the case for a few meals now, unfortunately. I'll still go and I do still enjoy the food, but might not tip quite so readily anymore.
Glad we made a reservation as it was packed. Our server was excellent! We explained that we were trying to catch a movie in 1hour & our food was expedited and the timing was perfect. Everything was fresh & delicious. We will definitely be back to dine there.
Service was quick and responsive. The bellinis (black cherry and peach) were very tasty. Usually restaurants don't put enough alcohol - but this was the perfect mixture. The breakfast burrito had a lot of flavor! Wasn't bland at all. The restaurant is really well decorated. Love the wood.
We visit this location a few times a year. It was packed so I'm glad we had reservations. The server mentioned that the menu had changed. I tried the ribs. The flavor was good, but they weren't very meaty and were a bit dry and tough. The coleslaw was very good, but the huge chunk of cornbread that came with it was the by far the best cornbread I ever had. I had to ask the server for wet wipes (because ribs are messy) and she brought me a full sized napkin in a hot bowl of water with a lemon. It would be easier and less cumbersome if the server could just leave a few wet wipes when the ribs are served.
We were seated in one of the booths right by the entrance to the kitchen. If you're concerned about noise and a lot of activity around you then you might want to request a table in another section. We'll be back. Please don't ever take that cornbread off the menu.
Mediocre at best
They lost our reservation and the three of us had to wait an hour to be seated. It was way too loud to be able to hear the waiter, and after only an hour there, my throat was raw from having to shout to my friends just across the table just to be heard.
Other than that, atmosphere was warm and cozy, and the pizza was good.
I was disappointed with our food - my daughter and I went for Brunch - I ordered the Eggs Benedict - the eggs were liquid, barely poached and the potatoes were cold - the breakfast pizza was bland - we wanted to order a Bellini or Mimosa but the lowest price was $20!
We’ve been to the London location and they were great! Had wonderful pizzas and margaritas - I will definitely go back to the Loudon location
New Year's Eve. Service was quick, really faster than we needed. Shortribs were disappointing though, very ordinary and not all that flavorful. New chef? Had them a while back with a Korean preparation that I remember as being very good. Friend's salmon also was plain, unmemorable. Generally like the place; might have been an off night.
They did no honor our reservation they way they should have. We checked in and were issued a pager while they prepared the table. 20 minutes later I checked in with the hostess and found they had overlooked our name on the list. We were seated immediately. If we hadn’t checked, how long would we have waited? Maybe not a big deal in the big scheme of things, but it did put a damper on the evening.
We’ve eaten at Matchbox about a half dozen times. The first time we ate there, we knew we had discovered a find. Great atmosphere and outstanding casual food! Your apple and pear salad with a honey vinaigrette dressing is one of our favorite salads in Northern Virginia. Keep up the good work.
This was my first happy hour experience at matchbox and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their food. Particularly loved their calamaris & their special sauce that goes with it. Great happy hour bite specials overall. Maybe it was due to it being on a holiday week, but they clearly did not have adequate staff for the amount of people that were there. Not only the service super slow, but my manhattan was done incorrectly & had to send it back twice to get it right. Although they were courteous to comp the drink, I was not too happy about the price of it being higher than what our server said it would be had I paid for it.
Again, I want to stress that perhaps this was due to me & my guest going on a busier, holiday weekday as opposed to any other weeks. I would still recommend this restaurant to foodies.
