We often eat at Matchbox before Washington Capitals games. Our OpenTable reservation ensures that we are seated promptly. Our server always understands the time we need to leave to get to the arena in time for the start of the game. Sandy was our server at our last visit and she was prompt and cordial. (We have had this same experience with all our servers in the past and this is one reason we continue to return.) They also have a great selection of entrees and the best pizzas in the area. One of my wife's favorites is the braised short ribs that are very tender.

Great restaurant but disappointed in some of the old menu items that have been dropped, especially the sausage and rigatoni pasta.

They just released new menus and that caused major kitchen delays. They had to remake my dish. While the long wait was an issue, the staff did a good job communicating and the manager comped our entire meal and that of the next table. We have ban a customer there many times and based on how they handled this problem, I will continue to be a customer.

Waiter/service/food was all excellent. Only complaint (which we did not voice at the time) is that the it is freezing cold outside with a windchill in the teens but there was cold air blowing through the vents. Our waiter was so accommodating I bet he could have done something about it if we had notified him.

Started out ok but the staff seemed to loose interest by the end of the evening. Food was tasty. Think the staff just wanted to go home.

We had an exceptional experience. As first time diners, we received special treatment which we really appreciated. The service was excellent! The food was delicious and the servings were ample. Highly recommend!

Matchbox has some unique menu items like a pear salad that we like to share. There pizzas are among the best in the Washington DC area!

Overall this was a disappointing experience at Matchbox. Service was slow at times, wine glass wasn’t totally clean, and food was just ok. It wasn’t horrible but Considering for years Matchbox was amazing and always packed, we were disappointed.

Great spot one block from the Capital One Arena (formerly Verizon Center). The service was great. The manager was awesome. The hostess sat me (a "fluffy"woman I'll say at a two person table next to the railing and the other seat backed to a caged off vent. Even though my husband is skinny, clearly we weren't going to fit. The manager quickly got us another table, our drinks, and was super nice. Our waiter was attentive as well. My only complaint was it's not as an extensive menu as the other locations. So not as many choices. My 3 burger appetizers that I asked for well done were pretty pink in the middle. I took one bite and that was it. It ruined it. I can't eat pink burger meat. My husband got the got the double pepperoni pizza which was good but way too greasy and he later got sick from it. The regular salad was very good! Wish I got the large. Knowing what I do know, I think I wouldn't eat at this location again. I'd go for a beer, salad and dessert, but there are many other options for dinner close by.

My husband and I love this spot. We had a great time talking in a cool atmosphere and enjoying delicious food. This last trip we went without the kiddos for a date, but it's great with the brood in tow as well. 😊

We had two problems: First, after placing our orders for a variety of items (group of 6) the waiter told us they ran out of mushrooms, a staple on many of there menu items. Then, once the food was delivered we discovered that on one of pizzas (prosciutto) the meat still had the wrapper on it....somehow it went thru the prep stage, cooking stage and serving stage with no one noticing. When we pointed it out to the manager he was very pleasant and apologetic and explained that they switched meat vendors and that this has happened a few times this week (a few times ???). They were pleasant and adjusted our bill but that was about it.
This tells me they have minimal quality control.

Hostess was a little aloof - seemed like it was a bother to walk us up two flights of stairs to seat us. However, our server DeSean was wonderful. Super nice, knowledgeable and attentive. I had the chopped salad, which was fabulous. We were there before a Caps game and they got us in and out quickly to make it to the game.

Went for dinner pre-theater, ordered an appetizer & 2 entrees (pizza & sandwiches are their specialties). Food was quite tasty, but high stools are hard for short people to get on & off. Waiter seemed to be quite busy. Portions were generous but not excessive, & prices moderate for downtown DC.

To be honest, I like Matchbox and go to several other locations in Rockville, Richmond and Capital Hill. This experience was very disappointing. The room we were seated in was unappealing (in the very back by a bar type set up with uncomfortable lighting) and the service was spotty. The food was unusually poor....burgers were overdone and cold. The pizza was ok but again not special. Very surprised.

Delicious cocktails and friendly, efficient service from Barbara at the bar. Our appetizers were so disappointing, however, that we decided to skip the main course and go elsewhere. Calamari was very tasty, but the portion miniscule. The scallops/mini crab cake/slider trio was shockingly poor, especially given the $21 price tag. The scallops were gritty, the crab cakes flavorless and the sliders dry and overcooked. Both the crab cakes and sliders were room temperature, though the scallops were hot, suggesting the kitchen needs to work on their timing.

We had a 5:15 reservation on a Capitals game night so the restaurant became crowded as we waited for our food. Our waiter was excellent; however, we had to ask for our appetizer when we saw the next table who came in after us get their appetizers. I must say, though, that the lumpia spring roll was worth waiting for. And we were double charged which the waiter apologized for and quickly rectified.

I love the matchbox. This particular day staff was short. Drinks too a long time, order we had stop someone to take our order. The staff was very apologetic just saying not enough staff this evening. The weekend of thanksgiving a concert across the street and plenty of patrons . Very disappointed. Not the staff but management planning

I have been to Matchbox a few times and always enjoy the food and drinks. This last visit was rough in particular due to the high volume in advance of a concert at Capital One Arena (old Verizon Ctr) and what seemed to be understaffed in the bar and kitchen. However, despite the long wait for our drinks from the bar 30+ minutes, our appetizers came out swiftly and were great (spring rolls and risotto balls), especially the risotto balls. Dinner for our party of four came out in stages, with one person's dinner getting lost in the shuffle altogether. The management staff quickly recognized the issue, owned up to it, and immediately offered resolution to our party. Despite the rough night, the food was great and I would return again. Thank you to the two managers who intervened without being asked. That goes a long way with me!

This was my first time to Matchbox, and it was a great experience! Very enjoyable pizza, fast service, clean and well lit facility in a convenient location. Two little nits: I made a reservation on OpenTable, there were empty tables and booths all over, but my party was shown to a booth right next to the stoves/kitchen, which was noisy and very smoky at times. And a little pricey, too. That all being noted, it was good food. I will definitely return (but will insist on a seat away from the kitchen if available).

We enjoyed a casual dinner before an event. I ordered the turkey sandwich and would order again. My husband had the lamb. A little messy to eat as a sandwich, but he said it was delicious and stevall of it as well. Good selection of beer and wine. Very rare to find an $8.00 glass of wine in DC and onw that tastes good.
We had not been here in a while and would return.
