Matchbox - Chinatown Ratings and Reviews
The arancini appetizer was very good. My short ribs entree was good, but the meat was fatty. My daughter enjoyed her pepperoni pizza. For dessert we shared chocolate chip bread pudding and fruit pizza. Both were very good. Service was slow, but a concert was that evening sdo they were busy.
I was disappointed with Matchbox overall after hearing good things. Perhaps we should have stuck to the pizza. My husband and I ordered entrée salads and both tasted like a prepackaged corporate product, all too common in the DC area. The service was ok. I like our server but she clearly stuck to a script, which again felt mechanical and determined-by-committee rather than natural. Two beers, two salads, and a small shared appetizer added up to just over $50. Sorry, but I can't recommend Matchbox.
Outstanding wood fired pizzas as well as salads, sandwiches and entrees. All healthy and appealing. Friendly service with good wine and beer list. We had 6 people and a great booth and were able to have conversation without difficulty. Good value and great location. A winner
There was nothing about the overall menu that I found exciting. In fact, I ended up settling for a pizza because there was nothing else that appealed. I tried the veggie one but found it very heavy on the garlic. I have eaten at this Matchbox and the one in Rockville. I'm likely going to pass this one by when looking to just grab a quick bite. Nothing special here at all.
Our teenage daughter had been here before and encouraged us to take her back. We weren't disappointed. In a city so full of restaurants, this bar/restaurant surprised us with a varied menu and great food. The only quirk was that my husband ordered a ginger ale and the waitress said they didn't have ginger ale. What bar doesn't have ginger ale?
The service we received on a Saturday afternoon was some of the worst I've experienced in the city. We waited for nearly 30 minutes before our waiter appeared and took our orders. He was nowhere to be found most of the meal. At some point the mananger started serving some of the tables in our section but it was insufficient.
Had high hopes based on reviews but must have caught them on a bad night. Have had better pizza at the ballpark. Cardboardlike, chewy crust and uninspiring cheese. Small slivers of prosciutto on the pie. Inattentive service...after 20 minutes had to chase down the beer I'd never gotten, and empty water glasses. Disappointing for the price. Lovely building though.
When we arrived at the restaurant and were standing outside waiting for our third party, three ladies exiting the restaurant stopped to tell us how wonderful their meal was and that we really should go in and eat there. They were right, food was awesome and service was perfect!
When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't very busy. Despite that fact, the server brought out the wrong drink while someone else continued to approach our table to ask who our server was. We didn't have a clue because he didn't introduce himself. We finally got a chance to order food and after we received it, he never bothered to check back. I would have actually liked to have ordered another drink but never had the opportunity to. Really inexcuseable that the service was that awful considering the place was pretty empty. The food is way overpriced for the quality as well. I normally frequent the Arlington location which is 10x worse so I wasn't expecting this.
They should hire people that actually know how to provide service not that roll into work on Sunday smelling like weed after a night of partying on Saturday night. They'll never see another dime from me.
Overall experience was great our server Fred was PHENOMENAL but the food was not as great as I remember unfortunatley. My mimosa wa very weak, and the rum in the maple syrup for my waffles was not good at all.I would suggest offering the option of not having liquour in the syrup.
A member of our party was treated very rudely by a host. The host stated there was no reservation for my friend, under my name, when he requested to be sat, yet the host did not check the computer. When I requested to be sat using the same name, the host was very polite and guided us to our table. There are differences between how my friend and I look, which I believe to be why he was treated this way.
No one ever came by to take our order even after we flagged someone down and they told us they'd find our waiter. We had a 5pm reservation, got there about 7-10 minutes early noted a group of servers just hanging out and talking not too far away. I had company visiting and at first we were busy catching up and it wasn't until after 15 minutes we realized no one stopped by to bring us water or introduce themselves. We flagged a passing server and he said he thought he knew who was our waiter but no one showed up. After almost another ten minutes we decided to leave. I worked in restaurants for over 5 years. The hostess and other servers should have been more aware of the fact no one picked up our table. They seemed to be socializing and not really into having a team work ethic or considerate of customers.
This place had the chance to be a great experience and it was a bit of a letdown. The building is beautiful. The food is pretty good. The service leaves a lot to be desired. The center enclosed courtyard area is beautiful but very reverberant and loud. The air conditioning must have been set at 60-65 degrees. It was frigid. They ran out of the app we ordered and didn't have a substitute. I ordered a second drink when the entree arrived and it never came. The bill still had the app on it that never arrived. The staff was aloof and fairly inattentive. I would not recommend this restaurant, nor will I return. Very disappointing.
Totally disappointed, very rude hostess service. Was as if it was an inconvenience that we were there. Not a simple hello to greet us and was met with attitude when we asked to be seated at a different table. Since we weren't welcome, we took our business elsewhere.
