Matchbox - Chinatown Ratings and Reviews
Hostess was a little aloof - seemed like it was a bother to walk us up two flights of stairs to seat us. However, our server DeSean was wonderful. Super nice, knowledgeable and attentive. I had the chopped salad, which was fabulous. We were there before a Caps game and they got us in and out quickly to make it to the game.
Went for dinner pre-theater, ordered an appetizer & 2 entrees (pizza & sandwiches are their specialties). Food was quite tasty, but high stools are hard for short people to get on & off. Waiter seemed to be quite busy. Portions were generous but not excessive, & prices moderate for downtown DC.
To be honest, I like Matchbox and go to several other locations in Rockville, Richmond and Capital Hill. This experience was very disappointing. The room we were seated in was unappealing (in the very back by a bar type set up with uncomfortable lighting) and the service was spotty. The food was unusually poor....burgers were overdone and cold. The pizza was ok but again not special. Very surprised.
Delicious cocktails and friendly, efficient service from Barbara at the bar. Our appetizers were so disappointing, however, that we decided to skip the main course and go elsewhere. Calamari was very tasty, but the portion miniscule. The scallops/mini crab cake/slider trio was shockingly poor, especially given the $21 price tag. The scallops were gritty, the crab cakes flavorless and the sliders dry and overcooked. Both the crab cakes and sliders were room temperature, though the scallops were hot, suggesting the kitchen needs to work on their timing.
We had a 5:15 reservation on a Capitals game night so the restaurant became crowded as we waited for our food. Our waiter was excellent; however, we had to ask for our appetizer when we saw the next table who came in after us get their appetizers. I must say, though, that the lumpia spring roll was worth waiting for. And we were double charged which the waiter apologized for and quickly rectified.
I have been to Matchbox a few times and always enjoy the food and drinks. This last visit was rough in particular due to the high volume in advance of a concert at Capital One Arena (old Verizon Ctr) and what seemed to be understaffed in the bar and kitchen. However, despite the long wait for our drinks from the bar 30+ minutes, our appetizers came out swiftly and were great (spring rolls and risotto balls), especially the risotto balls. Dinner for our party of four came out in stages, with one person's dinner getting lost in the shuffle altogether. The management staff quickly recognized the issue, owned up to it, and immediately offered resolution to our party. Despite the rough night, the food was great and I would return again. Thank you to the two managers who intervened without being asked. That goes a long way with me!
This was my first time to Matchbox, and it was a great experience! Very enjoyable pizza, fast service, clean and well lit facility in a convenient location. Two little nits: I made a reservation on OpenTable, there were empty tables and booths all over, but my party was shown to a booth right next to the stoves/kitchen, which was noisy and very smoky at times. And a little pricey, too. That all being noted, it was good food. I will definitely return (but will insist on a seat away from the kitchen if available).
We enjoyed a casual dinner before an event. I ordered the turkey sandwich and would order again. My husband had the lamb. A little messy to eat as a sandwich, but he said it was delicious and stevall of it as well. Good selection of beer and wine. Very rare to find an $8.00 glass of wine in DC and onw that tastes good.
We had not been here in a while and would return.
We selected Matchbox for a dinner with friends, all on our way to an event. The choice was pragmatic -- convenient location, etc. -- not a search for a culinary experience. Matchbox fit our needs perfectly. Our food -- no pizza but lamb sandwiches and pasta with sausage -- was tasty and satisfying. Our waitress, who knew we had a deadline, was super. And because we asked for a quiet spot, we had a table far from the bar and could comfortably carry on a conversation. Thanks, Matchbox, we'll be back.
Matchbox was convenient for a group of work colleagues. Everyone enjoyed their pizza, though one person said the tuna entree was good. The crab soup was scrumptious and the dessert pizza consumed even by those who don’t care for pizza. It had pieces of fruit over a thin crust and cheese and what appeared to be drizzled chocolate but was really balsamic vinegret. Our only issue was the noise level. With all the hard surfaces (metal, glass, etc) there is nothing to absorb the noise, even without music. Overall, we liked Matchbox and would return again.
Our server was great, food was delicious (baked risotto and pizza—get the risotto!!!) and arrived quickly, but we took my parents (retired) and they sat us on the third floor (a lot of steps). It was very warm up there! Our server was so friendly and included our children in conversation and while checking in on the table—I appreciated that!
Took the waiter 30 minutes to take our drink orders and bring our drinks. We ended up not ordering food until we had been seated for 45 minutes. When the food came over half the order was wrong. We ended up having to eat our meal in 12 minutes so we could make our showtime. The US government should use Matchbox’s meal service as a way to torture terrorists. A truly terrible dining experience.
As always, Matchbox delivered on their delicious, thin-crust pizza and mini burgers. The shoestring onions on the mini burgers are highly addictive.
We did experience a less than satisfying performance from our waiter and had to beg for everything for the table. Our meal (two pizzas) took over an hour to come out!
However, we have enjoyed many meals at this Matchbox and others and can attest that the service from this night was the anomaly.
The quality of the food has gone down quite a bit. The best part of our meal was the salad. The minis aren't as scrumptious and the onion straws no longer have the Parmesan cheese finish. Our server was having a terrible night, forgetting drinks, and simple stuff like silverware. I'll try another location, but Chinatown missed the mark for us.
Restaurant was very crowded due to Bruno Mars concert. We had reservations but had to wait about 20 minutes. We got a nice, high-top table and waitress was quick to wait on us. We were a little concerned about the quality of the food, due to the amount of people, but everything was very good. In fact, my husband has told several people the Trio included the best scallops he ever had. Overall, very good.
Matchbox's manager, Mike, SAVED my birthday celebration. We had just purchased concert tickets via cellphone that we thought were e-tickets but actually had to be printed in order to be valid. The concert was starting in 30 minutes and we were stuck needing a huge favor. Our waiter retrieved Mike on a very busy Saturday night. Mike got the tickets' files from us and printed them. He was awesome and we are forever grateful to him for going above and beyond to help out a customer. And our pizza, salad, and beverages were perfection too! THANK YOU MIKE for everything! We are forever Matchbox customers and this sealed the deal for us.
