Matchbox - Chinatown
It was here in Chinatown that the Matchbox story began. This narrow, rectangular building was three stories tall, fifteen feet wide, and looked like a matchbox. It stood vacant for so long, a tree grew inside of it, like kindling waiting to start a new fire.
Walk past the torch that lights our front door and smell the hot, crackling fire from two brick ovens. Have a seat inside, where we built the reclaimed timber and steel finishes with our own hands, or relax in the sunny atrium that was once an alleyway. Wherever you choose, there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers.

Imaginative selections of pizzas and other fare, great appetizer options and great selection of beer. I've never had a bad service experience, and this location was able to get us in and out in 45 mins, while never feeling rushed. Great spot for lunch or dinner!
The pizza and salad was fantastic, we showed up a bit early and we were seated right away for lunch and we made it back in time for the 1 pm meeting.
Great food! We had the filet and the chicken Alfredo. Flavor was amazing. Drinks were also great!
I made the reservation through Open table for 7:15pm for dinner. We arrived at 7pm and were seated at 7:25pm. Busy restaurant. We were seated at a two top table since there was only 2 of us however we were very close to the two top next to us and we all could hear each other’s conversations like we were at the same table. Also, it was difficult to get in between our table and the one right next to us and we both are not big people. Although I noticed most people had ordered pizza and it looked delicious, because we had had pizza the night before we chose to try something else on the menu. We ordered the shrimp and grits. It was delicious! I would recommend this restaurant - definitely get a reservation because it is busy and without it you would need to wait a long time.
Table was dripped on all night by a pipe above us.
Great place to grab lunch near the convention center. By the looks of the menu I’d recommend brunch.
Good times, good food. Solid pizza regularly. Appreciated the new menu.
It was great
Our server was pleasant and helpful, the food was yummy and we had a wonderful early mother's day celebration.
Was disappointed you had to order the bottomless brunch in order to get a breakfast style meal
It was great
The “service” is awful. It took about 8 minutes before someone came by to offer us water. The waitress appeared five minutes afterwards and we told her we were ready to order.
We ordered pizza and pastA. We saw the pizza come out of the oven and sit on the counter for ten minutes. The manager finally picked it up and served it to us and it was barely warm. We told him we have been watching for the last ten minutes to see if that was our pepperoni pizza because it just has been sitting on the countertop for the last ten minutes. We asked to have them put it in the oven to heat it up and he said their policy is just to make another pizza. He said he would put a rush on it.
Our waitress, who we had not since we ordered half an hour before, brings the pasta and says she will check on the pizza. The fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was served hot. The second pizza was delivered hot right out of the oven five minutes later. Both entrees were average which is what you would expect from a mass market restaurant.
We will not be back to a Matchbox and would not recommend.
We have been here at least a half dozen times in our travels and always found it to be a great place for a solid meal and drink. After being seated we waited 10 minutes before anyone came to check on us. I asked about the seasonal beer selection of which there were two and she had no idea. Wife's drink was not made as ordered. Finally was allowed to place an appetizer order and it arrived luke warm. We left before ordering as my beer order never arrived. Not sure I will be going back to this place that we always considered a go to when in Chinatown.
First let me start by stating I am a "particular" foodie with expectations that others may not embrace. The food was okay, but the crab cake I received had something of a 50/50 ratio of crab to filler. Disappointing, as I asked the server whether there was much filler in the dish. But, to her support, she did recommend the shrimp over the crab, as it was her favorite. I passed due to the amount of sodium I perceived would be in Old Bay seasoned shrimp dish.
Everyone was receptive and friendly. The service was good as expected. The ambience was quite nice compared to what one would think walking up to the smallish looking storefront structure.
I frequent the Matchbox on Rockville Pike in Maryland and was expecting something similar in downtown DC.
enjoyed the food (wood fired pizza is awesome), paired with a salad. Ambience is great, and service very friendly, responsive. Booked this online without any knowledge of the restaurant, both me and my guest were very pleased!
Overpriced for ok pizza and salad. Nothing special.
Matchbox brunch is extremely underrated. Food is great, price is right and the service is outstanding.
I took my youngest son (8 years old) to Matchbox in Chinatown in Washington, DC this past weekend. The wait staff were very friendly to him and he seems to have enjoyed his waffles and scrambled eggs. It was nice to be outside on the Matchbox front patio and enjoy an early 10 AM Saturday brunch.
The ahi tuna salad I ordered was pretty so-so...mostly greens and tasted like it. My wife had a bacon-oniony burger that was very good. If you go here, maybe stick to their mainstays - pizza and burgers. A bright spot was our server, who was very friendly and extremely attentive.
My friend and I were looking for a venue where we could have an early light dinner near the National Archives - as well as a good talk. Matchbox fit the bill entirely. We were each able to order (different) salads that came with a tasty and well cooked array of toppings, brought to us by smiling and pleasant wait staff in a corner table in a quiet section of the restaurant. Fully satisfied.
Hi there, thanks so much for your lovely review! We're so happy that you were fully satisfied with your experience. We look forward to having you back soon.
Great food, friendly staff, great atmosphere. Shrimp & Grits was awesome.
Absolutely great food and good service but can be a bit loud
Nice place and enjoyed the food a lot. Next time in DC would go there again! I was so happy to have made a reservation. When we arrived, there were a few people waiting, but by the time we left, there were quite a number of people waiting for tables.
Great family friendly restaurant!
Waited an hour for two pizzas, our waitress didn’t check in on us for that entire hour we were waiting, and then the pizzas were burnt.
The Matchbox food was delicious. We all ordered something different, and each one of us thought our food was outstanding.
Cold and the hostess was awesome and cute
Very good food at a very reasonable price .......and with great and efficient service.
Food was great. I had the shrimp pasta dish and my wife had the burger. Server was pleasant and efficient
. Nice vibe in restaurant. Went before Caps victory over Canes. Will go back for pizza and slider
Awesome food and service!
Matchbox was great! The portions were huge! The food was delicious! The atmosphere and service were great!
We will be going back. Wish we had one closer to where we live! We were visiting DC!
Loved the vibe and the atmosphere. Unfortunately we were seated upstairs with two tables of children under 10. The jumping, hopping and kicking were annoying to say the least. Not your fault, questionable parenting. We did ask to be seated at a quieter part of the restaurant which it was after these parties left.
Our order was delayed because of a large party ordering 18 pizzas. Also understandable, but we waited for our appetizers and salad too. Finally, a manager approached us, explained the situation and served us our appetizers. Meanwhile, other tables were being served who had arrived after us.
I would still recommend your restaurant.
We really enjoyed their brick oven pizza. The prosciutto and fig is a must!
45 minutes wait to order. Manager was useless, hanging around downstairs doing nothing leaving one waitress alone upstairs when he had loads downstairs.
I was very pleased with all aspects of my visit to Matchbox- Chinatown. I will return to dine again.
We were going to miss our reservation, so I called and asked to move my reservation to a little later, which they did. We hit traffic, and missed the new time by 20 minutes. They were very understanding, and seated us right away! Love that service!
Love the food. Waitress was fine to begin with but skipped out after bringing drinks and taking order. Needed refills. Had to find her for tickets to pay.
Great service! food was perfect as usual
Actually my 2nd Time here , great place, good food great service!!
