We found Matchbox in a search for casual restaurants near the Capital. We were thrilled with the area. Matchbox is a quaint restaurant/bar with a nice casual menu that leans towards appetizers, pizza, and sandwiches. We were seated at a window table and enjoyed watching the active sidewalk traffic. Food was excellent and Julissa, our server, was super. When we get back to the DC area we'll definitely be back to Matchbox
Good food, good service, good price, good atmosphere!
The eggs were horrible, the steak was small with more fat than meat, but the cinnamon rolls were awesome.
service was excellent.. menu and wine list was great.
The food and service at the table was great!
The pizzas, fried squid appetizer, and arancini were all delicious. Service was a bit perfunctory, but I would definitely go back for the food.
Good Dining Experience
Hostess was very rude and annoyed that we brought our baby with us. The table they took us to was not very conducive to kids but no effort was made to accommodate. The server was disinterested and slow. Food was ok but nothing special.
Food was fantastic and environment great. Service was poor at best-I won't come back to this particular location but will go to another one in the future. A complete dining experience must include an attentive wait staff who can deliver water and soda before appetizers arrive at your table-not to mention a glass of wine that barely got to us before the main meal arrived. Then you ask for the check and takes 10 minutes to bring it. SERVIVE MUST IMPROVE.
I was surprised how rude the hostess was towards me- I’ve never had a poor experience before at any Matchbox location.
Tasty brunch, great drinks!
We went to Matchbox and it was great! Our table for ten was ready for us and we didn’t have to wait at all. The service was so friendly and the pizza was tasty!
Delicious for a birthday dunner
The food and atmosphere were excellent. The wood fire pizza was very good and the jalapeño cucumber margarita was great. Very friendly cool atmosphere
Great food, service, awesome experience. Server was efficient, professional.
Matchbox Capitol Hill is my favorite place along Barrack's Row for a later bite to eat with a friend or business associate. The super friendly staff here are enough to make one continue returning time and again. The Matchbox Meat Lover's Pizza is still my favorite and a reliable stand by!
Food was good when it finally arrived. Not sure what the problem was, but they did come and let us know and apologize.
We ordered 3 medium pizzas off menus, not custom. The pepperoni was loaded with pepperoni! Mushroom sort of bland, but the artichoke pesto was delicious.
Great atmosphere. Pizza and burgers we're awesome. Also had a great bowl of soup and a wedge salad.
Our server was absolutely wonderful and so was the food. They were totally out of beer, on tap and in bottles.
The food was good, but the service was below average. The waitress forgot my salad, and we asked for a salt shaker when our food was served, as my daughter's meal needed some salt, and they never brought it, ultimately apologizing that they didn't have any salt shakers -- WHAT? No salt shakers at a restaurant? Overall, d.c. prices for good food but service was sub par.
We enjoyed a great waiter in Alex; thank you for providing us a wonderful experience! The atmosphere is really nice and warm. We sat upstairs and the ambiance worked great for conversation. We had wedge salads (awesome) and a pizza. The pizza was good, although the crust was a little droopy for thin Artisan I thought. The flavors were there and the cheese was properly melted across the top. All in all, a great place to grab a drink and dinner. The beer was great.
AS USUAL.....FOOD SERVICE AMBIENCE WAS IMPECCABLE!!
The food was great. The service left a lot to be desired. :(
The service is pretty bad here. It's as though they couldn't be bothered. We've been a couple of times because friends have suggested it, but we won't be back.
Great food and service. Reservation was troublefree and we were able to get a table a few minutes prior to our reservation time. Comfortable atmosphere.
Fig asiago pie so good. Crab avo app splendid. Cucumber G&T my new fav!
The food and drinks were decent. Nothing special, nothing bad. The grilled chicken sandwich fell apart when I tried to eat it and it was a huge mess, but it was tasty.
We were seated at the last high table closest the kitchen and the restrooms. This is the second time I've been seated here. There is a closet behind this table that the staff is constantly in and out of, which is/was disruptive to guests experience. The restaurant should relocate the table by a foot so that the cabinet can be opened without disturbing guests or relocate the contents of the cabinet to somewhere else.
The menu is huge & very delicious even though it's on the saltier end. The service was the problem, the hostess was not friendly, seemed like we walked in after something gave her an attitude, felt the need to correct us when we said that that we are meeting our party upstairs (that the raised level is not upstairs) & acted like we shouldn't be there. Then, our server dropped 1 of the entrees & brought me the wrong pizza. Very disappointing, especially since I suggested the place.
We had a wonderful attentive waiter - often not the case when a the table is all women.
Delightful time to celebrate with friends
Excellent food and service! We had a great casual meal and would definitely recommend it!
With a reservation, we were seated at a table in the bar right by the door -- Grand Central Station. The music was far too loud and really annoying. We couldn't finish and leave fast enough.
Good food, generous portions, all pizzas had a gluten free option. The specialty cocktails were excellent. Our server was helpful but not intrusive. A pleasant experience.
Mary Beth was perfect.
The meal has recently changed and it’s subpar compared to the old menu. Smaller portions and it wasn’t seasoned as well as previous visits.
We have been here several times. Our daughter loves the kids sampler platter and we love the pizza and drinks! This time we had to wait more than 30 mins after our reservation for a table and not until my husband inquired, did they seat us at an empty table which was too big for our party. The place is always crowded so I recommend for special occasions (e.g. Valentines), making reservations for 30 mins earlier than usual - knowing you may have to wait.
I arrived before the rest of my party for a 615pm reservation. Resturant seemed pretty dead but they made us sit on the 3rd floor. We're all able-bodied but they also put this man using a cane and his wife (?)who was helping him up on 3 as well. Our server was nice. I don't know if Matchbox makes staff wait tables on different floors. If they don't, she had 3 which doesn't explain why things took so long. While we are waiting for our mains to arrive we smell smoke, like 'the place is on fire kind of smoke' so we jump up and look for where it's coming from and for someone to alert. We can't really see it but it's to the point where it's bothering my eyes and wondering if I'll have to use my inhaler. An employee comes over and tells us it was the pizza oven and they're putting the fans on to dissipate the smoke. It eventually goes away but no one asks us if we're OK or offers us anything as compensation, like a glass of wine or dessert. I had to ask where my wine was anyway. This place is often hit or miss.
Great time. My daughter loves their pizza. The staff is very professional and prompt.
