Matchbox - Capitol Hill Ratings and Reviews
Matchbox used to be a neighborhood gem. Now it’s rundown from the banquets to the bathrooms. No toilet paper. Bathrooms not cleaned for what appears to be for days. The food is still good. The service is far superior to the establishment. I won’t eat there again until something changes.
We were staying in Washington DC for New Year's as well as our Anniversary. Wanted a nice place that wasn't fancy and had good food. Matchbox was it! Had a bar and grill feel to it with a hipster menu. We ordered the pepperoni pizza and a side of fries (we honestly were going simple that night) but it was great! I rarely eat pepperoni, and I munched along with my husband. Fries were great too. Filled us both up with no problem. Our water was friendly, though he seemed distracted (which amused us). We sat on the second floor - recommended if you want some quiet conversation. They do have a bar if you want to watch the game. Very much enjoyed this place! And if you are coming to DC when congress isn't in session, you really don't need to make reservations.
BTW, this entire section of DC was nice..there were several restaurants on this street alone that came highly recommended by tripadvisor and opentable.
The food was really good! It's sophisticated but laid back as well. I ordered the chicken sandwich by recommendation by our server and was not disappointed! I wish I could remember our waiters name because he was awesome! Overall the staff was friendly; service was quick; and the food was great!
This was my first time at Matchbox -- my local customer recommended meeting here and we had a great appetizer and pizza. If you can't decide on one flavor they will do a half and half pizza with any 2 flavors you'd like. Great for a business dinner or date night outside when the weather is nice.
The food was on point, per usual, but my group was disappointed in the service. At the initial introduction we were told we had two servers, however, we were never checked on for beverage replenishment or how our meal was. There was initially one larger party near us but they left and we were the only party left on the floor. It seemed as though the servers were more interested in cleaning the section (likely to get out of there) then checking on us. We ended up using our own bottled water to refill our drink glasses for something to drink.
Had specifically requested the quietest table for our party of 8. Other people Had been seated there so we had to seat elsewhere. What's the point of a reservation if you can't get what you want. I should point out there were many empty tables when we arrived; midway thought out dinner the noise from the bar and other diners made conversation impossible.
Great food and great service, but there was an issue with the reservation. We has a reservation for 7:15, but not seated until 7:45. To top it off, I got an email message from Open Table saying I didn't show up. I had to call the restaurant and have them fix my reservation to reflect I was there.
This location continues its long decline of the last couple of years and the food reached a new low this time. They had everything down so well before, and were introducing new menu items and innovating. The last four or five visits have been increasingly disappointing. This time the Q pizza was really not good, with plain chunks of tasteless chicken on top and a less tasty crust; the onion rings were simply horrendous and the crust resembled an inedible corn dog. Even that old standby, the salad with apples and pecans, was thoroughly seeded with overly sweet pecans. A hamburger lover in our group did not finish his. I have to conclude that things have slipped here beyond repair, but the space is beautiful and it seems to remain popular.
