About Matchbox - Capitol Hill
Located on the bustling 8th Street corridor of Barracks Row, our second location in Washington, D.C. was built out of love for the revered Capitol Hill neighborhood.
A former vending machine warehouse built in 1927, some of the treasures found in this building are skylights covered up for decades, original timber beams, and a shuffleboard that now serves as the main bar top. Our lofty mezzanine mezzanine accommodates 44 guests seated, or 30 guests standing, so there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, private parties and get-togethers. For the best seat in the house, ask for “the Box.” It’s the original cube booth that we’re famous for.
We’re Capitol Hill’s neighborhood gathering place for fun, upscale casual dining, with local, award-winning beers, broad spectrum wines, and handcrafted signature cocktails you won’t find anywhere else.

Matchbox - Capitol Hill Ratings and Reviews
I arrived before the rest of my party for a 615pm reservation. Resturant seemed pretty dead but they made us sit on the 3rd floor. We're all able-bodied but they also put this man using a cane and his wife (?)who was helping him up on 3 as well. Our server was nice. I don't know if Matchbox makes staff wait tables on different floors. If they don't, she had 3 which doesn't explain why things took so long. While we are waiting for our mains to arrive we smell smoke, like 'the place is on fire kind of smoke' so we jump up and look for where it's coming from and for someone to alert. We can't really see it but it's to the point where it's bothering my eyes and wondering if I'll have to use my inhaler. An employee comes over and tells us it was the pizza oven and they're putting the fans on to dissipate the smoke. It eventually goes away but no one asks us if we're OK or offers us anything as compensation, like a glass of wine or dessert. I had to ask where my wine was anyway. This place is often hit or miss.
We received a notice from open table stating the restaurant notified Open Table that we were a no-show for our reservation. In fact, we arrived 1 hour before our reservation and was seated promptly. No one asked about our third guest until more than halfway into our meal. When asked, the waiter was informed that the third guest was ill and would not make it. To make matters worse, the restaurant reported this information to Open Table while we were still physically in the restaurant having dinner. Overall experience is rated 1 star. I've been to this location a few times before and never had issues. I've also dined at the original location in Chinatown for years as well as the other Matchbox locations in the local area. I will not be returning to this restaurant.
I hadn’t been to Matchbox in a year or two. Everything was fine, but nothing was extraordinary, except for the pepperoni on the pizza. The pizza crust was not as good as it used to be, less airy, crisp, chewy. Good place, but DC has lots of great places now.
Food was excellent as was the server. It did take quite some time for the food to be delivered, we had to get the check and boxes for leftovers right when the pizza came out. May have been a bad day for the kitchen but we were never told why the wait was so long. (over an hour for pizza).
Matchbox used to be a neighborhood gem. Now it’s rundown from the banquets to the bathrooms. No toilet paper. Bathrooms not cleaned for what appears to be for days. The food is still good. The service is far superior to the establishment. I won’t eat there again until something changes.
We were staying in Washington DC for New Year's as well as our Anniversary. Wanted a nice place that wasn't fancy and had good food. Matchbox was it! Had a bar and grill feel to it with a hipster menu. We ordered the pepperoni pizza and a side of fries (we honestly were going simple that night) but it was great! I rarely eat pepperoni, and I munched along with my husband. Fries were great too. Filled us both up with no problem. Our water was friendly, though he seemed distracted (which amused us). We sat on the second floor - recommended if you want some quiet conversation. They do have a bar if you want to watch the game. Very much enjoyed this place! And if you are coming to DC when congress isn't in session, you really don't need to make reservations.
BTW, this entire section of DC was nice..there were several restaurants on this street alone that came highly recommended by tripadvisor and opentable.
The food was really good! It's sophisticated but laid back as well. I ordered the chicken sandwich by recommendation by our server and was not disappointed! I wish I could remember our waiters name because he was awesome! Overall the staff was friendly; service was quick; and the food was great!
This was my first time at Matchbox -- my local customer recommended meeting here and we had a great appetizer and pizza. If you can't decide on one flavor they will do a half and half pizza with any 2 flavors you'd like. Great for a business dinner or date night outside when the weather is nice.
The food was on point, per usual, but my group was disappointed in the service. At the initial introduction we were told we had two servers, however, we were never checked on for beverage replenishment or how our meal was. There was initially one larger party near us but they left and we were the only party left on the floor. It seemed as though the servers were more interested in cleaning the section (likely to get out of there) then checking on us. We ended up using our own bottled water to refill our drink glasses for something to drink.
