Matchbox - Capitol Hill
Located on the bustling 8th Street corridor of Barracks Row, our second location in Washington, D.C. was built out of love for the revered Capitol Hill neighborhood.
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
Our lofty mezzanine mezzanine accommodates 44 guests seated, or 30 guests standing, so there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, private parties and get-togethers.

The reason for the 4 star for overall experience instead of 5 star is because your entire host(ess) staff left something to be desired. The young lady that was there when we arrived was lackluster at best. And when exiting, there were at least 3 at the host desk and no one thanked us for coming or said goodbye. I guess their personal conversation was more important.
Our waitress was the BOMB
They forgot my order and my order only somehow out of everyone at my table. Then told me that my order was served to another table, and then charged me for it when I told them
“Don’t worry about it”. But y’all don’t have AC so I guess I should give y’all a break huh?
Great food in a fun location. Excellent service. AC was out.
First time at a Matchbox since they closed their 14th Street location. The food was great and the service was good, but the restaurant had to be at least 80 degrees. We were sweating while eating! Hopefully that's a temporary issue.
I don’t like that the tables are not dressed when seated. We had to ask for EVERYTHING. I need a napkin, I need a saucer. Ridiculous. Before seating guests, please properly dress the table.
The pizza was excellent as ever. The fried shrimp and french fries were tasty.
Unexpectedly good! Brunch is hard to mess up but Matchbox did a really great job providing value for money. The bacon was delicious! Most places give you half a slice of burnt bacon but here I got several chewy full-size slices! The pound cake french toast was also really good. I thought it would be too heavy having pound cake and then egg and then fried but it was still light AND the syrup didn't absorb too much so it stayed moist.
The food was amazing, as always! This is one of the first visits I have had here where the service was terrible. At one point, it took almost 25/30 minutes between visits to our table from our server. We saw her wait on other tables and she didn’t even glance in our direction so we could get her attention. We were trying to ask for more water as it was a 90° day but were unsuccessful. If this was my first visit here, I would never be back. Fortunately, I’ve been here enough to know (believe) it was a fluke so I will be back.
Service and food was great. I love that they are still being cautions with COVID-19 Our meals were served hot and just delicious
Server was awful!
Server was awesome. Very attentive. Wish I remembered her name. NAIA??? Service is everything. Food was great as expected. I had shrimp app and salmon salad
Rude service and did not pay attention to us.
First time eat brunch their, have eaten lunch and dinner a dozen of times. We will stick to lunch and dinner only
I've been visiting this location for years...pre and post pandemic - never has an issue before today. We made a reservation for 6:45pm and arrived at 6:42pm and were seated immediately. We watched several servers past our table for 18 minutes without greeting us, saying a simple "we will be with your shortly", or even just placing waters on the table. The hostess even walked by himself and said nothing. After 18 minutes, a server finally came and said "well I'm sure you know what you want now". We left and decided to go else where and will no longer be visiting this location.
Our server was very attentive!
My daughters 10th B-Day
First of all they sat us right at the entrance under piping and in the access of people coming in and out. Making our exposure risk very high. While we left the server a great tip we only saw her once every 25 mins
Nice outdoor brunch with the fam. Good brunch menu
Waiter was super friendly, but so busy that he could barely keep up. We waited almost 30 minutes and our pizza was burnt.😕
Great service and nice atmosphere! Would definitely recommend
Had a great lunch! Server was great! I will be coming back.
The food was great!!!!!! I will be back to eat. Thank you!
A really nice experience for a casual Friday night dinner. We were seated right away with our reservation. Our waiter, Conner, was prompt, friendly and experienced. Food was fresh and came out exactly as ordered. Grilled chicken was moist, plank salmon was cooked perfectly and burgers were also great! Nice wine choices and specialty cocktails. I would return and recommend to friends.
Great food, server was awesome. We came to our reservation late and they were still able to seat us with no problems
Good food on a nice day!
Very pleasant experience, overall, in this Barracks Row restaurant for our family meal. The host and the server were very accommodating, if a bit tardy. Pizza, the burgers and the fries were excellent, the crab cake sandwich was a bit rich for my taste. This reliable eatery does not let you down!
Our server was amazing. I’m usually so picky about being in the industry myself but our girl was polite and knew her stuff! Me and the fam will definitely be back to see her.
Great place. Good ambiance. Only thing that upset me was that they ran out of French toast during brunch on Valentine's Day. Not a good sign, but everything else was great! Also, we wanted to eat outside, but they have no heaters out there.
Great Apple & Pear Salad
Good food. Slow service took 20 minutes to get our first drinks and watwr. We were a little mislead about the brunch drink specials.
Brunch is an excellent value and the menu items
Staff here are always friendly. Food is consistently good - my favorites are Shrimp and Grits or Meat Lover's Pizza.
We eat at Matchbox on CapitoL Hill 3-5 times a year. Last night, I was disappointed. I ordered a steak salad with pear, bleh cheese & lettuces. The menu simply said steak as an option. The steak arrived breaded in pepper & inedible. I had to send it back & order another dish. Our friend asked for bread. They brought one piece grilled. There were 4 of us. Seemed disappointing. Please share with restaurant.
The manager greated us. Great demeanor. Hostess followed up and seated us. Both were friendly and communicated well. Chyna was our server. She continued with the same pleasant, welcoming customer service from the moment she came over to our table until we finished our meal. Food was good. Cocktails as well. Clean, relatively quiet establishment. Recommend, and will patronize again.
The pizza was pretty bad!! Will not be back
We did not stay to dine. We were seated practically in the kitchen, not waited on, and ignored. After 15 minutes, we walked out and found a wonderful restaurant down the street called Trattoria Alberto. That one we will recommend. Never will we recommend Matchbox.
Was not very busy but service was just plain slow and disinterested. Despite every big booth being empty, we were taken an upstairs table. The calamari app was one of the smallest portions I have ever been served. The pizza quality has gone down - can't say why/how but it was just bland and uninteresting - we had 3 different types - all blah. Did not have ingredients for two of the signature cocktails. Have never felt I didn't get my money's worth at Matchbox - today I wished I had gone elsewhere.
The staff was really nice. We had reservations and was seated five minutes early. We sat at the table for more than twenty minutes before our waitress came. When our meals were brought out, they were cold and the food was average.
Second time visiting this location and a bit disappointed. Food was subpar compared to last visit. Presentation was not the best for both dishes, sloppy to be exact (we ordered fried calamari and crab cakes). There also was a bit of confusion in seating us. Could’ve been an off night but was not impressed.
