Matchbox - Capitol Hill
Located on the bustling 8th Street corridor of Barracks Row, our second location in Washington, D.C. was built out of love for the revered Capitol Hill neighborhood.
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
Our lofty mezzanine mezzanine accommodates 44 guests seated, or 30 guests standing, so there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, private parties and get-togethers.

I really hate to leave this review because Matchbox is one of my favorite restaurants. This particular experience was sub-par 😩. The food was great the second time but originally came to our table warm. The waiter seemed to be having a bad day. I mean the whole experience was unusual. Like a piece of hair was under my
Pizza 😩😩. I’m only leaving this review because all of my other experiences have been great. I will be back, hopefully things are back to normal or even better.
It was 15 minutes before a waiter got to our table and 20 minutes to get water. I think it was just an off night as usually we have much prompter service. The service after this gap was very good.
Certainly a reliable experience at Matchbox. The food is always good and my experience with service has also been good on each visit. This one is a staple location for me when in Capitol Hill.
Decaf coffee was not available.
Cream of crab soup was almost all clear liquid. Crackers were not even available.
Serving of mashed potatoes was extremely small. The bowl was half empty, maybe 4 tablespoons of potato.
Crab cake was served cold.
Not a good experience today.
First and foremost the service was sub-par. The waitress never came back to check on us and my entre was less than desirable. However my guest had the crab pizza and loved it.
Food was great as usual. The server was professional
I’ve always enjoyed Matchbox, but this is the first time I’ve gone their for breakfast/brunch. I didn’t realize you can’t order individual breakfast items—you have to pay for the all-you-can-eat plated brunch, or select from the regular lunch menu. The $31.50 brunch doesn’t include drinks, although mimosas and Bellinis are only $3.00 extra. The food was mostly mediocre and not worth the price (or maybe I’m the only one who thinks a $30 breakfast better be amazing). I would have much preferred smaller, tastier portions with more thought put into them. And it would have been nice to have some healthy options besides avocado toast. The service, however, was outstanding.
This location is usually on top of its game but this day it was way off. The server was disinterested, and the food was awful. We had to send the burgers back because they were raw and the pizza was crunchy and bland.
Our waiter was very courteous.
Our grandkids like matchbox because they like many of the items on the kids menu. We like it as well because it offers us a variety of menu choices that we enjoy. The waitstaff has items to occupy the kids while they wait for their food and tries to get the kids' orders out quickly.
Not many place can do pesto on pizza. So the pizza was delicious and the pasta was pretty good. The beer options were great
Too noisy and loud - is this a club or a restaurant?! Asked for a specialty (non-alcoholic) drink featured on menu - they didn't have ingredients to make it. Soup of the day? Out of it. Special dish - "swordfish" cost $23 and was the tiniest little cutlet I've ever seen over a few strands of broccolini, that's it. Entire group hated their meals and went home dissatisfied. Won't be returning or recommending.
Brunch is pretty good for the price. Menu items have great variety to choose from and food was flavorful. However, the customer service culture is on life support.
The quality of food and drink service at this establishment has gone down from a year or two years ago. Frankly, the bar to table service is appalling. For instance, recently, I got my premium cocktail dripping over the sorbet dessert glass. I was told the bar no longer serves cocktails in classic cocktail glasses. We no longer wish to go there for drinks; I'll have a beer and my wife will have water. We enjoy the burgers; spicy chicken sandwich and the friend shrimp basket.
This was a poor representation of Matchbox’s normal
service. First the air conditioner was not working and secondly, our table ordered the bottomless brunch, but only received one round of food. We asked our server about it several times, only to be repeatedly told it was coming, but it never did. To top it off, the kitchen ended up closing for brunch and we never received our food. Very disappointing
Service was absolutely horrible. We were seated and waited another 30min just to be greeted. Our order was taken and we waited forever for food. This was the worst brunch experience.
A great place to eat! This was one of our favorite restaurants on our trip to DC! Would definitely love to come back! The meatball app was delicious. We shared a crab cake entree and the salmon which were cooked to perfection.
Good variety of yummy tapas. Our waitstaff was very friendly and helpful. Good experience overall.
Food was fantastic. The tuna salad was really great. It was a bit loud, but all good!
Lovely food & service.
Really enjoy some contemporary food for a change with no fries or burgers in sight.
We've always enjoyed past dining experiences at Matchbox, both for work and personal outings.
The staff on this particular day was good and our meal was delicious. The problem was that they were having issues with their Air Conditioning unit that day with temperature hovering around 91 outside. They did mention it to us as we were seated and said that it was being repaired as we spoke. The first half of the meal the temperature was tolerable. Unfortunately between our appetizer and entrees, the large glass doors at the front of the restaurant we're opened. I'm guessing it was an attempt to get some cross ventilation. Unfortunately, it raised the heat and humidity inside and we all started perspiring. It was a discouraging way to end the meal.
Again, the staff and food were both very good, but the high temperature overshadowed our meal. We'll look forward to returning again in the future when the HVAC will be repaired and operating correctly.
I’ve been many times before but this day wasn’t the best but not worst. The manger picked up where the server lacked in taking a long time to come to us.
I expected better service. While our waitress was decent when we saw her, the host and hostess were not as helpful. We had a party of 8 people, they seated us at a table for 6 people. When we arrived, the host did not provide us with an estimated wait time until I asked after standing and waiting for about 15 minutes. Most of our party said their food was average. Since the service charge and 20% gratuity were included in the check, I would have expected more attention from the waitress.
I ordered 3 different drinks on the menu that were "out of stock". The server and bartender finally felt bad and made a specially crafted cocktail to mimic the one that I ordered, and it was delicious. The food is average, slightly better than a Chilis/Applebees. Definitely worth it for happy hour prices but not really for full price.
Delicious fig and prosciutto pizza, excellent service, quiet enough to carry a conversation. A good value for your money!!
Matchbox is always a safe bet. There is something on the menu for everyone. This summer(‘19), their crab & corn pizza has given me life!!
The crispy half chicken was great and I substituted the smashed potatoes for red skinned potatoes and they were delicious. The meatball that came with my kids ginormous pasta and meatballs was cold so that was sent back and it took a while before they brought the meatball back . Everyone else in the group got pizza and they loved it.
Went for brunch - their website had listed it went until 3pm. Extremely rude waitress who snatched the brunch menus up from in front of us and told us we would not be served brunch. Asked to speak with the manager who assured us we would be served brunch. Waitress was slow and inattentive, some food never came out, and most food was mediocre at best.
Was very warm
The unlimited brunch is amazing. The food is delicious and you get small plates so you can try everything. This is my favorite DC brunch and I can't wait to come back again. I would recommend not doing the bottomless mimosas, though, because then you will be able to try more food and you can get $3 mimosas with the unlimited brunch deal.
We made a reservation for a Wednesday night. We got there on time and the only table “available” was a high top in the bar. I have problems sitting at a high top table. When I asked for an open booth in the back she said that she just gave it away. So I asked about another open booth in the restaurant and she said that she just sat a table in that section and it would be too much for the waitstaff. I said that we were with friends that we hadn’t seen in awhile so we were ok with sitting and talking. Well she just ignored that. So we sat at the high top in the bar right next to the front door (there is a heat wave going on in DC right now). When the waitress finally came I ordered an ice tea. Well they were out of ice tea. My friends order drinks. A table was then filled right next to us. They got their drinks before us and had their dinner before the waitress came back to take our order. As far as the food, we ordered the spinach artichoke dip. The dip was runny and not very good. At the same time we tried to order a chicken pesto pizza but they were out of pesto. So we ordered a pepperoni pizza and a prosciutto and fig pizza. Both were ok. The waitress was not very attentive and seemed more interested in her friend across the restaurant. I have been to this restaurant three times prior to this visit and have always had a good experience. I was very disappointed with the hostess and the waitress and I was a little embarrassed because I bragged about this place to my out of town friends. I’m not sure I will ever be back.
This place has sadly gone downhill. We live a block away and made last min reservations on a weeknight for us and our 2 kids. We arrived and they told us the fryer was down and they had no pesto - ok no big deal. Waited forever to be seated despite a nearly empty restaurant, then waited forever to get water to our table.
Only one kids menu/crayons because they didn’t have any more printed. Ordered a beer, waitress came back 5mins later to say they were out of Blue Moon. Ok fine; it happens.
Then we ordered the kids mea pasta so we could get the little ones fed quickly. Waitress comes back to tell us they are completely out of pasta. At that point we cut our losses and went to the pizza place around the corner. Manager was nice and offered us a coupon, but frustrated to waste 30 mins and wrestle 2 toddlers at a place that was so unprepared to serve customers.
Always a good experience here. The food was good and the service as well.
We always have a great meal at Matchbox when we visit DC
We went for the unlimited brunch. Waitress was not that great but everything else was. Food was really tasty. Small plates because it’s unlimited but they were quick with our re-orders.
We went to Matchbox for Brunch & did the Brunch Box. I loved the concept ---a buffet cooked to order, you pay one fee and order as many small plates as you want. We tried a wide range of their offerings --cinnamon rolls [YUM], chicken & waffles [excellent], Matchbox Scramble [ok], biscuits & gravy [very good] --to name a few. The food was very good ---some things were awesome some just good nothing was bad. The waitress was very nice and initially attentive but disappeared for over 20 minutes towards the end. I imagine that's their way of cutting down food orders but ironically I wanted to buy another bloody mary not order food. The place was pretty empty when we arrived and they sat us near the kitchen ---definitely impacted the ambiance score --- and I don't know why they would've done that. We will go again but I'll be more vocal about where I sit.
Dear YoungGrasshopper, thank you for leaving us such a wonderful review. We are thrilled that you loved your experience; our staff will definitely be happy to read what you wrote. We put customer experience and satisfaction as our priority, and your review reaffirms the hard work we put in every day. So thanks for your kind words and we look forward to seeing you again.
Great food as always — but the brunch menu is really unclear. They have a new “brunch box” all you can eat menu that has no price listed. You can also order brunch items a la carte but that is not listed on the menu and we had to ask the server which items were available a la carte. It shouldn’t be so hard to order some eggs at brunch!
I had the Chicken Pesto pizza. The flavor was good but the pizza was overdone and the pizza was dry. It was just okay.
This is just a great place to go with a date, family, or with a group. They have so many different delicious dishes to accommodate a variety of dietary needs and preferences. Their signature cocktails are amazing, but so is their beer and wine selection. They really try to make sure that everyone has a great experience here and it's consistently good and always dependably friendly service. It's our go to place.
Dear AndyG, we appreciate you, and your kind words so much! Our staff will be so pleased to read your glowing review. Thank you for making Matchbox your go-to spot and look forward to seeing you again soon!
Great food that satisfied a whole range of fussy eaters. Friendly and efficient service.
Thank you so much for your feedback Janet, we appreciate your kind words and hope to see you again soon!
