About Matchbox - 14th Street

Built at the turn of the century, the 14th Street location has been reborn as a bowling alley, automobile showroom, rehearsal space for Arena Stage, and most importantly, Club Bali where Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway made history.

Three soaring levels mean plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Every seat in the house has a unique perspective, but everyone is treated to dramatic views of the original exposed brick façade and perfectly-restored grand entrance.

In warmer months, our 60-seat outdoor patio is perfect for people-watching on 14th Street, while an 8-seat chef’s table overlooks all the action in the kitchen. Like a bowling lane, our 25-foot bar smoothly glides around two wood-fired ovens.

We’re the 14th Street neighborhood gathering place for fun, upscale casual dining, with local, award-winning beers, broad spectrum wines, and handcrafted signature cocktails you won’t find anywhere else.

Great experience for my first time, Darren was great the whole night and I would definitely come back.

Service was really bad- took someone at minimum 20 minutes to come to our table, and 30 minutes seated before getting offered water. When the waiter was taking our drink order, he was unaware of what the local draft beers were, but offered to go get the list- which took another 15 minutes (still no water at this point either). It was a solid hour of being seated before HALF of our table of 6 got drinks, and another 15 before the other half got theirs. An hour+ for our first round of drinks. Ridiculous.

We went here with a bunch of friends for our birthday and had the best time! Not only was the restaurant super accommodating with our big group, they also managed last minute arrivals and order changes with ease.

We had an off evening there in terms of food preparation but the server and the manager tried hard to rectify the problems. We were definitely happy when we left in spite of the problems. We will give them another try.

This seems to have been an off night. I love this spot and will continue to frequent this location. The steak was cold and my friend’s short ribs were over cooked. This is not the norm.

The food is usually good. My food arrived cold this time, as if it had been sitting a while.

When making reservations on OpenTable, it gave me the option for "High tops" or regular seating (I dont recall the other term), I selected the other term. When I got there, the hostess proceeded to bringing us to the high tops, I let her know that I selected the other option she said she will see what she can do. I then asked if there were any available booths because that is what I wanted, she said no. Shortly after being seated at the lower tables, I got up to wash my hands, there were two empty booths. The hostess lied. Aside from that the food was just okay.

The ambiance was very nice for a Weekend night dinner. Our waiter was very personable and he also gave us a complimentary appetizer since it was our first time eating at the restaurant. The drinks were strong but tasty, and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend this location to others.

We were disappointed they took the Prime Rib off the menu and changed the Salmon and put it on some soup with veggies. The salmon on soup is just odd. I hope they go back to the old menu, it was better.

We really enjoyed our evening at Matchbox although for a restaurant known for pizza it was a bit disappointing that the shrimp and grits and the tuna tartare tacos were far superior to the pizza.

My date liked the food, but as a vegan diner I was a little upset. I let a note with the restaurant about my diet restrictions but the hostesses obviously didn’t tell my server. After I told my server I wanted my veggie burger without chipotle mayo, it still came with it anyway.

I've been to Matchbox a few times and always enjoy the food and atmosphere. Only thing I think that needs to be improved is better communicating that the happy hour specials are only available at the bar and high-top tables.

Unfortunately, they sent us the wrong pizza. We had to wait 30-45 minutes for a replacement pizza, and during this entire mishap, we did not receive an apology from the manager or staff nor did we receive anything to make up for this issue. The correct pizza we received was burnt, and the crust was inedible. We will not be returning to this restaurant due to the service alone - unfortunate since we live two blocks away and we love pizza.

I reserved a table with Open Table, but the hostess sat us in a weird corner on the steps. It was really open. Every time a waiter brought out food or drink, it looked like he was walking toward our table. I also had a huge coat on and had to stuff it in on the banquette. It would have been much better to have an extra chair.

We ordered 2 pizzas, 2 beers, 1 scotch, and 1 cider. The food was good but the spicy pizza was not spicy at all. The service could have been a little more attentive.

I recommend, but do not get stuck in a bad table.

I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The pizza was great, as always and the service was prompt and friendly. Had a carafe of wine, a large pizza and an appetizer. Split two ways with my friend, we each paid $44. Pretty nominal cost for what we got! Thanks!

The food was fairly good, not spectacular. My Farmers Soup was excellent, but the short ribs were just OK. This is the first time I can remember being served short ribs sliced off the bone. The result made them dry. Because of the sauce, they were tasty, but I would have preferred therm being on the bone. Other menu items were good but not great as well. Although the bread was excellent, I do not recall seeing anything on the menu to indicate that there was a $3.50- charge for bread.

Went here for brunch on a Saturday and was able to make a reservation day of. Located in great spot on 14th, convenient to shopping and local bars. I ordered a pizza which was okay, but the drinks and service were great! My sister got the scrambled eggs breakfast which was delicious and reasonably priced. Would recommend for casual lunch or dinner!
