About Matchbox - 14th Street

Matchbox on 14th Street is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal with family or friends. This legendary spot that Billie Holliday once performed in has three floors, as well as a contemporary setting with exposed brick walls. Matchbox features appetizers like the popular mini burgers served with crispy onion straws and huge meatballs topped with pepperoni sauce. Tasty pan-seared salmon, Cuban short ribs or a half of chicken with grilled asparagus makes a fulfilling entrée. Pizza made with various toppings cooked in a wood-fired oven, hearty sandwiches and scrumptious desserts are also on the menu.

Just blocks from the U Street Metro, Matchbox also hosts private events on the third floor for business luncheons, receptions and more. It has a full bar that serves specialty cocktails like the rum thyme and southern charmer. This eatery has a comfortable outdoor patio and offers weekend brunch.

Unfortunately, they sent us the wrong pizza. We had to wait 30-45 minutes for a replacement pizza, and during this entire mishap, we did not receive an apology from the manager or staff nor did we receive anything to make up for this issue. The correct pizza we received was burnt, and the crust was inedible. We will not be returning to this restaurant due to the service alone - unfortunate since we live two blocks away and we love pizza.

You feel welcomed the minute you step through the door. Service was pleasant and professional. This was not my first trip to this location. I am never disappointed by the service or the quality of the food.

I love the relaxed feel of this place – like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The pizza was great, as always and the service was prompt and friendly. Had a carafe of wine, a large pizza and an appetizer. Split two ways with my friend, we each paid $44. Pretty nominal cost for what we got! Thanks!

The food was fairly good, not spectacular. My Farmers Soup was excellent, but the short ribs were just OK. This is the first time I can remember being served short ribs sliced off the bone. The result made them dry. Because of the sauce, they were tasty, but I would have preferred therm being on the bone. Other menu items were good but not great as well. Although the bread was excellent, I do not recall seeing anything on the menu to indicate that there was a $3.50- charge for bread.

Went here for brunch on a Saturday and was able to make a reservation day of. Located in great spot on 14th, convenient to shopping and local bars. I ordered a pizza which was okay, but the drinks and service were great! My sister got the scrambled eggs breakfast which was delicious and reasonably priced. Would recommend for casual lunch or dinner!

Matchbox is always good. This Matchbox, near 14th and U in D.C., was perfect for an early evening dinner and get-together. The pizza was superb, and the salads delicious. Service was excellent.

My experience at Matchbox was fine however when I asked the waiter to bring me a to-go box he explained that his manager wouldn't let him which I found weird considering most restaurants provide to-go boxes.

We had brunch here last weekend. I was making reservations for a fairly large group (~23 people) and the host and servers were great! We had a last minute increase in our group size and they were incredibly accommodating. The brunch menu was more limited than I recalled and the entrees needed better descriptions. Otherwise, it was a great experience.

As always, a GREAT experience at Matchbox. The pizzas, sliders, salads, and fried chicken sandwiches were all perfectly cooked and seasoned. But our server, Taliah, was the best part. So personable and attentive, and caring without being invasive or too familiar. This restaurant is a smash hit every time.

We enjoyed visiting this location. This location is in what i believe that call Chinatown. It looks like easy walking to many shops after eating if you desired to do that. We went in around 1115am. This was a wise choice for us because it allowed us to beat the crowd. Our servers name was Matthew and he is excellent at his job. I LOVE great customer service and he did not disappoint. The food was delicious and while I did not partake, they do have bottomless Mimosas (if you are interested in that). The brunch menu was tempting so that hubs ate from the brunch menu and I ate from the regular menu.

The cheddar biscuits were burnt and cold (even after sending them back once), while my blackened chicken was undercooked. The server was nice, but kept disappearing for long periods of time. I've had great experiences at this location in the past, but it's been about a year since I've been here. Hopefully, better luck next time.

At a recent double date with out of town friends we decided to go to Matchbox and had the best time! Our waiter, oh I wish I could remember his name, was INCREDIBLE. He gave us great information on the drink/cocktail selection, in which we took his advice and were SO HAPPY. Pizzas came out hot and delish! Such a fun night with incredible service and food. Thank you!

I totally regret having my birthday here. We had a party of 13...so you would think someone would give us good customer service because they're thinking about the tip. Wrong. We had to ask for the appetizer 3 times before they came out together with our actual meal. My wife had asked initially if they could bring a birthday dessert to the table, the waiter said it was a treat on them and when the bill came there was a charge for it. I dont mind paying it's just the principal, seems scammy. All they did was drop off the desert and go away. We had to ask for attention (silverware, refills, our food). I really was disappointed especially after the good reviews I had seen.

Most folks love the pizza, I love the crabcake more-- usually.
This time, the crabcake came cold in the center. Really cool, not just not hot. The waiter joyously offered to send a manager over. After 7 minutes or so, the manager arrived and joyously offered to bring me a hot one. That took 10+ minutes more. By the time it came, my group meal was just about over, so I asked to forgo any crabcake at all. The server, joyously, took it off the check but packed it to go anyway. That was nice, though the crabcakes don't reheat super well. But still, that was thoughtful.... Next day: I reheat the crabcake and sit down to for delayed gratification. There were many, many pieces of shell in the dish. Oh well.
... I should have gone with the pepperoni pizza like the rest of my group did. That was very good.
