Matchbox - 14th Street
Three soaring levels mean plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Every seat in the house has a unique perspective, but everyone is treated to dramatic views of the original exposed brick façade and perfectly-restored grand entrance.
Built at the turn of the century, the 14th Street location has been reborn as a bowling alley, automobile showroom, rehearsal space for Arena Stage, and most importantly, Club Bali where Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway made history.

Awesome service, fantastic for kids. The complimentary fried risotto was an awesome touch for new customers. When visiting DC we will visit again.
The food here is good, but the quality seems to drop a bit when the restaurant gets busy. We had a group of 6 and were able to get drinks, appetizers, and pizzas in and out in about 45 mins. Our drinks did take a while, and showed up after our appetizers were delivered and eaten. Pizza was good, but could have been hotter.
When we got the check, i forgot that i was a rewards member, but the waitress did not offer to adjust the check to use my rewards number. It would have been a nice gesture considering we had a large bill.
Very good, as always. Nice atmosphere, solid service, great beer selection, and excellent chicken pesto pizza.
great food and great service
The food was delicious and our waitress was great and gave us wonderful suggestions. Calamari was so delicious and the pizza was wonderful!
The hosts were rude, inconsiderate and inefficient. The service was incredibly slow and unhelpful. Would not return.
We had a lovely experience here. Friendly staff, great value for brunch, tasty food and kid friendly. Couldn’t have asked for more.
We had the Fried Chicken Cobb and the ribs. Portions were good, the server was awesome, and we like the location. Overall, we had a good dining experience.
First time eating at Matchbox. Food and service was great! If we end up back in Washington DC we will be sure to stop in again!
This was a great place for my family to eat - the food was really good, the service was on point and the wine and beer selection was great. A nice night for the whole family - even though it was loud, we still had a great time. I would go back, and I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone with kids looking for a nice place to eat where there are food options for everyone to enjoy - great pizzas, burgers and appetizers.
We had the brunch box all you can eat brunch. Everything we ordered was delicious. It did take quite some time between plates to get the next plate but it was worth the wait. We loved the breakfast pizza. Bring your appetite!
Food was great we did the endless brunch
The crab dip and the calamari made for a fabulous beginning. Salmon was cooked perfectly, the short rib pasta was absolutely delicious, and the chicken bowl was so fresh and flavorful. Darren provided outstanding service-attentive, knowledgeable, and so friendly!
Great experience but loud and difficult to talk
Some of the Appetizers came out after the entre’ was served. Server was not to be found ..... took forever!!!
The manager adjusted the bill but which was nice but the wait/kitchen staff need to get their act together
Mike was our server and he was amazing. Very kind and informative. I will be back!
Fried foods are now overdone. This was not the case before. Pizza still good.
Air conditioner wasn't working properly. Waitress was absent for long periods of time.
Friendly staff. Manager came by, outside seating was great! New item fried shrimp were good!
food was great! The noise level was a bit tough but we just moves closer.
Pizza is not their thing anymore. What used to be a good spot not delivers crackers crusts that seem pre-made. I remember going to Chinatown when it first opened and it was great. They have fallen so far. On the other hand, my table mate got the salmon salad and it looked really good and cooked really well.
Our waiter was very good. But he had to let us know the appetizer special he recommended was not available. We then ordered artichoke dip and he had to come back to the table and for a second time something was not available. That in itself is not a huge deal, but you could sense the Matchbox on 14th street is poorly run. We had a drink at the bar prior to dinner and the staff was talking to one another and joking and were very slow to finally take our drink order. We will not go back to that Matchbox location. The one in Rockville is exceptionally run.
We were there to celebrate my brother's 51st bday...the same restaurant we went to to celebrate his son's admission to Howard and where we dined to celebrate his graduation 4 years later. Consistently outstanding food and service
Solid food that is always tasty. The drinks though, even after asking to make sure none were too sweet, were full of syrup — way too sweet. The service there is always nice and kind, but as usual our server was never there when we needed her and we waited too long at each step of the meal. How that can happen when runners are serving the food and a manager checks in is beyond me. No excuse for not being in touch with the table.
Great food and great service...job well done
As always, great people! Really like this place a lot!
Okay, we generally have good experiences at Matchbox for lunch or dinner, but this morning was off-the-mark for them. We arrive and the two hostesses argue about tables; we were seated on the fourth level of the restaurant (which is fine but we were the only one's up there and the place was not even close to half full); food that we didn't order kept coming to our table for the hour and half we were there; and on and on. It was the twilight zone. So, maybe an anomaly. Probably won't try again for breakfast. To get breakfast items, you have to order the brunch. I think you should be able to order breakfast food even when you don't want to stuff your face =-)
Excellent, excellent service! The food was great and prepared as requested.
Food and service were superb. The room was very loud and tables tightly spaced.
What a great time! Been coming here for 3 years and love this place. Also never knew they have a loyalty program (DEFINITELY CHECK IT OUT). As always great times. I worked with Kristina, she was professional and genuine! Ryan K. was very polite and had great suggestions. Also mentioned Matchbox is opening a new location in Silver Spring, Maryland! Michael Hartner came over and said hello, and it made me feel very welcome. He definitely knows how to treat individuals to make the experience that much better!
Started out great, bread and garlic butter was outstanding. Arancini delicious, meatball was big and good but sauce too spicy. Just started appetizer and food came out. Timing was terrible between appetizers and dinner. Pizzas were just ok my burger over cooked and somehow arugula was used on my burger instead of lettuce, I don’t like arugula. Wanted cheesecake for dessert but it was frozen so we couldn’t have that but I will say the brownie was delicious. Just an ok experience and with all the restaurants in DC I will not be going back.
After asking our server "what comes with the shrimp & grits" (mean a side salad, some bread, whatever) her response was "shrimp.....and grits". So I ordered a side salad. When the order was delivered, my salad was missing. I asked about it and she told me she wasn't clear on if I wanted it. (Strike 1). When I looked at my entree, there was a pitifully small portion of grits and way too much broth. I mentioned that I think I may have gotten the appetizer portion. She said "no...5 shrimp. That's the entree portion. Would you like more grits". I said yes and it took almost 15 minutes to be delivered. (Strike 2). After asking for a refill of my iced tea, that took almost 10 minutes. (Strike 3). Sorry Matchbox, you're out.
Fun place for brunch with lots of variety. Enjoyed the endless bunch box and cocktails. Pound cake and blueberry muffin french toasts were excellent.
We got arancini, matchbox meat pizza and the chicken main plate. The food was delicious.
I loveeeeee this place for their unlimited Brunch. I always leave so full and fulfilled
Went for happy hour. The food was great and good selection of beverage options. Would go again.
Drinks took 20 min to arrive. Service slow and poor. They gave me regular pizza instead of gluten sensitive. I wrote an email to discuss this and they never responded.
Great service and the expanded menu is awesome! I am really impressed!
Hadn’t been in a while. One of my favorite pizza spots. The service and food were great!!
Pizza was good but underwhelming. Service was very good. Restaurant has very modern fun layout. Good for social get together.
