Three soaring levels mean plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Every seat in the house has a unique perspective, but everyone is treated to dramatic views of the original exposed brick façade and perfectly-restored grand entrance.
Built at the turn of the century, the 14th Street location has been reborn as a bowling alley, automobile showroom, rehearsal space for Arena Stage, and most importantly, Club Bali where Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway made history.

Our server was terrible. We waited forever for everything. Some items we never received. We had to acquire the assistance of another server.
I love Matchbox. Love the pizza and other entrees. I've never been disappointed with the food.
First time here for a quick happy hour snack. The pizza was nice and lite with good flavor. I would like to see more wine options though. We got a white and red blend. The white chard was terribly sweet and the red was ok. Our waiter was great though, so we'll go back and try again.
Matchbox is one of my favorites, with a great menu and lots of comfort food.
Visiting from San Diego, we stopped here yesterday on a food tour. We loved all our stops, this one seemed like a great place for brunch so we reserved a table. Perfect choice!! Great food, friendly service, great value!! Would definitely come back! Thank you Matchbox!
Excellent, professional service from front desk to wait staff. Great value for quality at price.
It took ten minutes before our server came over. She took our drink order and it took five minutes to bring our water back. We both ordered soup and salad and asked for it to come out before the meals. Fifteen minutes later, a different server brought our soup and salad. Their cream of crab soup was very good, their side Cesar salad was fine, but nothing special. About five minutes after that, before we could finish our soup and salad, another server brought out our food. My wife got the chicken cobb salad, again perfectly fine, but nothing special. I got the crispy half chicken. The chicken was very good, but the mashed potatoes were ice cold. I'm sure it could have been easily fixed, but we didn't see our server again until we were done. Then they overcharged for the side salad, but we never saw our server after that! The salads were fine, nothing special. The crab soup and crispy chicken were good. The chicken might have been great if the mashed potatoes were even warm, but we will never know. The food may or may not have warranted a second chance, but the service pushed us FAR over the edge. Tables around us with other servers seemed to be getting much more attention. We saw our server a grand total of three times, when we placed our order, when the water was brought out, and getting our bill. The table next to us, saw their serve three times, between when we were seated and when we were greeted! When we left, the hostesses didn't ask us how everything was, and barely looked up from their phones to tell us to have a good night. Unacceptable!
Food tasty, menu reasonably varied for four older folks with differing diet requirements. This location was perfect for our pre-theater meal with friends. Very convenient to be able to make an early reservation & relax before walking a block to the Source Theater.
Good food. Great people. Perfect for what we were looking for!
We ordered four bottles of champagne but were given three, then our waiter later delivered us a bottle of Trader Joe's champagne.
We were sat by one waiter, who did not check on us often and did not take our food order. An hour after being sat, a different waiter greeted us and stated that she would be taking care of us, and our previous waiter had gone home.
The noise level within the restaurant was very loud, and I could often not hear what the guests at my table were saying.
I don't recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are many restaurants on 14th street that offer better food options and have a better ambiance .
We waited 20 minutes to get drinks, and 40 mins-1 hour for food. A table of 16 people who arrived 40 minutes after got their food before us, a table of 2. The manager had a bad attitude. Worst service!
I was surprised to have a bad meal experience here. These were the issues:
1. No plates for our apps.
2. That didn’t matter because both of our apps arrived cold and had to go back.
3. We ordered sliders with no pickles. It was obvious that they had added pickles, realized the error and just removed them. Yuck.
4. One of our pizzas was missing two toppings.
5. Super rude staffer when we tried to use the elevator because by friend had a vision issue and we were seated upstairs. “Pardon me” is a lot nicer than a terse “Hey, Miss!”
The manager did remove the errant pizza from our bill and made a new one for my friend to take home.
Overall, I’m not sure I’ll return to this location. Lots of other places to eat in DC.
Great Unlimited Brunch Menu! The Shrimp and Grits is sooooo delicious! The brunch menu is a great selection of items and their signature pizzas!
Fantastic service. Staff and managers were super friendly! The atmosphere and mood is very inviting. A perfect place to go to on a Friday night. Plus their drinks and Happy Hour were great!
I went on a date and it was a nice time waitress came and checked but brought me the wrong soda.
Food was great. Service was slow though staff was very nice.
Service was incredibly slow. Initially it took us over an hour to get drinks, and the restaurant was only about 50% occupied, so not sure the
Great selection on menu, good drinks, vibrant atmosphere, good/efficient server:-)
The restaurant has been a staple for quite some time. The filet entree was incredible but my pizza was dry and cold but probably because of the service. You could tell it had been under a heat lamp for a bit. We would have complained but we were hungry and already had complained about service trying to get a bottle of wine. But the restaurant did offer condolences in purchasing the bottle of wine for us. Not something we asked for but a nice gesture. I hope it fixes whatever is going on since it is a staple on 14th St!
Our sever - Her name is either Chili or Shelly, was wonderful. The spinach and artichoke dip appetizer was disappointing. It was delicious, but only half the bowl was filled even though it was accompanied by a ton of chips. We were told this is the correct amount. I ordered the special - Swordfish. It was over cooked. BUT My drink was delicious - a sweet and spicy cocktail and the atmosphere was nice. I’ve dined there before and know they have good food, just wasn’t as good as usual this time.
Attentive servers.
Very tasty food.
Interesting building.
The crispy fried chicken was really good. Our waiter was excellent.
Took 45 minutes to receive our drink order.
Our waiter was extremely nice and checked up on us regularly. Definitely coming back
I love this place and always have. The staff are warm and attentive, they always have good recommendations, and the food delivery is quick. I have really only, for the last 4 years, eaten here on the weekends at lunch/brunch time. I have *never* had a time when I had a ridiculous wait; even the special dates where you cannot use OpenTable they have been quick to find tables and extremely accommodating. I'd highly recommend if you are looking for a casual, friendly locale with good pizza, good drinks, and great service.
Had a great experience on this visit. Our server Cece was the best! She was attentive, provided humor but great service with regular check-ins on how we were doing.
Forgettable lunch experience. Ordered a cheeseburger with only lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise as I am allergic to garlic . I got one with a tomato based sauce so sent it back. Was surprised that I got the replacement burger right away but when I lifted the bun saw that they just scraped off the sauce and no tomato. Sent it back and finally got it after all my friends had finished eating and still without tomato. I gave up and just ate it. Unacceptable service so won’t be going back. The only good thing was that they did not charge me for the burger.
Good service especially Darren (?) and mel! We will visit again
It was a gathering of college friends & it was a perfect choice!
Been to 3 different Matchbox locations and the food is always great. Maybe just an off day for this location; our server was very pleasant but useless. Pretty much anytime we asked for something we had to ask someone else a second time. I asked for a drink refill when our food arrived and had to ask someone else after I was done eating because it had never arrived. I saw managers running around so maybe they were short staffed overall, but it was a lousy experience.
We ordered a fig and prosciutto pizza. The waiter brought out an olive pizza and we asked about our pizza. He then left with the olive pizza and returned with the same pizza with 3 pieces of prosciutto on it. We complained again and 25 mins later we received our correct order.
Thank you for taking care of my clients. They had a lovely time and appreciated the food service! Cheers!
Birthday celebration
An overall good experience. Food was great as usual. The patio is just buzzing with mosquitos. Definitely avoid patio seating in the summer.
Went for the Sunday Brunch, the options are limited. For $30 pp you can find a better food option at other restaurant. On the bright side the Mimosas and Bloody Mary are $3, if you order the brunch menu.
Very nice service. Pizza was thin crust, crispy and delicious. Nice options if people are dining that do not want pizza, as well.
The food was great. It was a last minute decision to go here on a Friday night. My boyfriend and Split a pizza and the arancini
Our waiter was great. He gave us great info to make correct choices. He was very personable and reminded me of a Hollywood actor. I wish I could write down his name.
I haven’t been here in a while but the food is not nearly as good as it used to be. The service was wonderful though. I was disappointed.
You must be hungry to head over for brunch, but once there, your appetite is satisfied. Lots of little plates for the $40 price - kinda pricey, but worth it if you're hungry for an eclectic meal.
Fun to bring lots of others and taste.
