About

This restaurant is permanently closed. Permanently Closed - If you're not from here, you probably haven't heard of us. If you are, you already know that Mat & Naddie's offers its own brand of fine dining combined with a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere that has attracted a local following since opening more than a decade ago.

Fine, yet accessible, local cuisine is the watchword here. Although we do get the occasional tourist who ventures off the beaten path, Mat & Naddie's caters to its neighbors' tastes.

Longtime Mat & Naddie's cook, Steve Schwarz, purchased the restaurant from founders Paula and Michael Schramel and their children Nat & Maddie (get it?). Schwarz creates the friendly and funky look of a roadside café that does not betray how very ambitious the Creole fine dining menu is. When weather is pleasant, diners opt for patio seating, which offers silhouettes of horseback riders on the levee behind which freighters ply their way up and down the Mississippi.

I have been to Mat & Naddie's twice and it has exceeded my expectations both times. The food is creative and delicious, the service is very attentive, and the wine list is excellent. They have a variety of incredible wines from all over the world--and at different price points. The cocktails are great too, and not absurdly priced for their high quality.

The restaurant is located in an old cottage along the river, so the ambience is pretty romantic. They have a patio with colorful lights ahead, which is very nice, but can get noisy with the traffic from River Road. All in all, it's another great restaurant in New Orleans that manages to maintain a unique character. Highly recommended!

I happened to find out about Mat & Naddie's while reading about New Orleans shotgun-type houses, and the restaurant is contained in two of them, I read. So, I took the St. Charles streetcar from the French Quarter out to the neighborhood which was incredibly charming. The restaurant is at the edge of a neighborhood of lovely, modest cottages from the 19th century. The food was also incredibly tasty and served with efficiency and graciousness.

The people were pleasant and the food was ok. The shrimp in the soup appeared to be imported and small. Steak was fine. Overall it was an ok meal but just average for New Orleans.

The restaurant is quaint and the food opinion is mixed. I got the chargrilled shrimp which had heads and tails on them Yuk! It was dry and hard to peel and only 5 shrimp that were not very big. I think they left them whole to make it look like more food. The sweet potato and avacado with the shrimp made for an interesting and good taste combination. My husband got the pork dish and he loved it. It came with potatoes and carrots and gravy that he said was very tasty and the pork was tender. He asked for bread to go with it and we were told that they have no bread. Really? Two glasses of wine, two beers, two entrees only and the bill was $98 before tip and no bread. Plus our waitress was slow. Cute place, good taste to the food - I debated about three stars or four, but I doubt if we will be back.

WHAT?! No bread? If we had known would have brought some from home. How can a New Orleans restaurant not serve bread?

Mat & Naddie's is in our neighborhood, but this was our first visit is quite a while. It's an old house, which looked a bit shabbier than I remember. I started with the house made charcuterie, which was good. My wife had an oyster salad. She was surprised that it had no dressing until she found a puddle of dressing under all the greens. Odd. For my entry's I had chorizo spiced grilled shrimp. These were in the shell, though there was nothing on the menu to make me aware of that. The plate also held sweet potato purée, pieces of avocado, and several other bits and pieces. Probably at least one too many ingredients. My wife had crispy catfish green curry. This was certainly the oddest looking plate of the evening. The curry sauce was actually bright green, and as my wife put it, it looked like green slime. She said it tasted ok, but the appearance was certainly off-putting. I think this place has slipped.
