Best Hokkaido scallops outside of Hokkaido, and I should know having lived there for two years.
Excellent service. Ate at the counter solo and did not feel rushed. Sushi is very fresh. I had several rolls and they were all very good. It was a little noisy but I think that was because there were several very large groups in the room and they were loud.
The sushi (nigiri) was wonderful. We sat at the counter. Friendly sushi chefs. We saw our server once for a drink order. Flagged someone down eventually for our tab.
Lunch date and it was splendid. Happened to be Halloween, kudos to mgmt to allowing staff to not ignore the fact that it is Halloween and great choice of our server to not over do it. The food , experience and ambiance were great and the service was top-notch. Our black kitty server was knowledgeable, friendly and polite. We’ll be back!! Happy to recommend!
This is one of my go-to spots when I’m in Portland. I find the food so fresh and just fantastic, the service top notch and the room quite beautiful (on the second floor with a nice view of the trees).
Nico and Carlos were wonderful. Carlos is so gifted as a chef and artist. We were not expecting such great presentation. Their hospitality and kindness was a real blessing.
We were very rushed- waitperson would not back off. Ridiculous.
Overall great evening with friends! Thanks!
Wonderful quality, beautiful presentation, amazing umami
Really delightful sushi. Sit at the counter, get to know the chefs, and they’ll prepare really special things.
great quick service and friendly staff. food was great.
I love sushi and have had it at many places throughout Portland. But Masu consistently delivers the overall best experience: food, service and ambiance.
Our food was good to great. The server was very nice and moderately attentive. Perhaps they were understaffed? Two of our party got their food after a longer than ideal wait, but the third in our party waited for an hour for their food. Sat down at 740, wasn't eating until almost 945, after the others at the table were finished with their dinners.
I am sad to say that Masu sushi did not live up to the ratings and the hype. Everyone on OpenTable, Yelp and Google reviews gives this place 4 stars and I can barely find a reason to give it one star. We sat at the sushi bar and our server was quite rude when we sat down. I asked for an iced tea and she rudely replied, “We don’t have iced tea. We have hot green tea or lemonade if you want”. It wasn’t so much what she said but how she said it. Our sushi chef, Alex, was great, and probably the best part of this dining experience. He offered recommendations and chatted with us about sake and the fish available for the evening.
We started out with half dozen oysters and this was the only edible item we ordered. After that we moved on to 4 orders of different nigiri and a roll, none of which tasted fresh. It was all kind of luke warm and gave us the feeling that it could be going bad. Overall, Masu did not stand up to the reviews it’s received and we will not be going back for fear of getting sick from not so fresh fish. So sad because we were really looking forward to our special sushi date night.
Masu is one of those places that is almost too hip to be enjoyable for the likes of me, almost... but it stays on the reasonable line of the 'Portlandia' mythos and is a pleasant place.
Where they nail things is in quality fish. Too often I end up in places with super-fancy rolls, and all sorts of gimmicks. At some places it seems like the freshest thing behind the bar is the butane in the torch that the chef has to wave across everything. But not at Masu. At Masu there is someone in the kitchen that knows fish and presents quality.
When the goal is good fish, Masu scores.
Everything was good except hot water smelled and tasted like chemical or chlorine...
Wonderful service delivered by Carly and Abbie. The food was beautifully presented and excellent. We will be back
Masu is our go-to sushi place. Great every time. Recommend it.
We’re regulars and think that this is the best and most sophisticated sushi restaurant in Portland.
I was out of town for work in Portland. The food was fresh and delicious. The three of us shared 6 rolls and the Mackerel. It was a bit too much food but it was delicious. The Miso soup is a bit too salty but it has a flavor similar to Udon that keeps you drinking. The Death by Sushi was my favorite roll with its creamy warm taste. One ordered the Day Boat (albacore tuna) from the specials list which was excellent. If you like spicy don’t skip the Japanista.
Great service, cool spot for a date, sushi was really good but not the best I’ve had. Still would recommend Masu after hitting up the local breweries!
The fish was fresh but the service could use a pick me up.
Highly recommend. The establishment is upstairs off the street. Nice ambiance. Service was quick. Fish was fresh and a good selection. Will be back.
It was good.
We love Masu. Probably the best sushi in Portland!!
Outstanding best sushi I’ve had in a long time very fresh service was great
Get that salmon belly!
I loved the sushi!
The food here is great. Our waitress made us feel a little rushed which was surprising since it wasn't too busy. Otherwise, it was a good meal.
Great service with an incredible Sake list. We had a great experience.
We sat at the sushi bar. As usual, Niko took care of us. The fish was fresh, tasty and he kept the dishes coming. The oysters are divine:silky soft especially Japanista, spicy hamachi & spicy scallop handrolls. The bar served generous pours (martinis & Sapphire/ tonics) & the wait staff is always responsive & quick. There are many good sushi bars in Portland but we have yet to find one that compares to the superb quality of consistently fresh fish at Masu. We’ll be back soon!
Always excellent! Very fresh fish and great variety. I always go with the 9 piece chef’s choice sushi and am always very pleased. Knowledgeable and attentive staff, too!
Absolutely delicious! Great service and a nice interior
Friendly. Comfortable. Well prepared food.
Food was as amazing as I remember and the plates were gorgeous. We were confused about who our server was though, and our drink order was never taken. We felt forgotten about and were sitting with empty plates and water glasses in front of us for most of the night, so it was more awkward than it needed to be. Food is good enough to come back at some point, but for the price only for very special occasions.
Some of the best sushi we have ever had. We had four sushi rolls - The St. Helen’s Volcano, Death by Sushi & Japanista rolls were phenomenal. The Kenzo was good, but not close to the flavors of the other three.
One of the best places in PDX for shashimi and rolls. The fish was fresh and in the right temperature to eat. The uni was nice and dry. Would highly recommend.
Sushi chefs were great!
Unbelievable- great food and awesome environment.
The food was delicious and it server was excellent. She gave great recommendations and explanations of the dishes.
