Massimo's Eclectic Fine Dining Ratings and Reviews
I will preface this review that our standards have been skewed after living and eating in New Orleans. However, this is one of the better restaurants in the local Clearwater/Palm Harbor area. The appetizers were very good (riced flower calamari) and excellent (maple leaf duck and brie). If you stick to the regular menu, the prices are VERY reasonable for what you're getting. On the other hand, we heard that the specials are where you get the best of what the Chef has to offer at the moment. The only drawback is that the specials jumped from $20-30 for main entree up to $40-50. One of us had the veal chop which was very good ($47 I believe?) and the other had the lamb rack (regular menu), which was very good as well. The rest of the specials all sounded awesome and we would have been happy with almost anything on the regular menu. The server was very attentive but not to the point of annoyance- which was appreciated. One other thing to note is that although we weren't in a rush nor did we ever feel that from the staff, we were in and out of there within an hour- that's appetizer, drink, main course, and dessert. Granted, it wasn't terribly busy. With all the strip-mall, commercialized, run-of-the-mill food spots up and down Hwy 19, it's refreshing to have some real quality dining nestled in.
My wife and I were looking for a romantic dinner for our 33rd anniversary we made a reservation and were put at a table very close to another table. Our reservation was for 6:30 and there were only three other tables filled. When I asked if we could be put at a different table because I didn't want to sit that close to another couple I was told by the owner (female) that all the tables would be filled and that's where we had to sit. At that point we should've left but we thought we would stay and see how the food was. As the night went on several couples came in and got to sit at tables for four. I was annoyed by this most of the night and it really did ruin my dinner. There'll several tables open during the time we were there. I would not recommend this restaurant to a friend. I felt I was treated like a second-class citizen.
Although I have to say that Jennifer who waited on us gave us excellent service. But because of the table situation I will be returning.
First time. Lovely room. Extensive wine list. Much appreciated professional wait staff.
My warm duck salad was quite good; my wife’s Caesar salad was indifferent. My Osso Bucco was very nice again. My wife’s seafood special was nice, but not special. Risottos with both dinners were a cut above.
Call it what you want, but at this price point I would like to be documenting “exceptional” and “toe curling”. There wasn’t any of that this time. Would we go back -yes.
Our first visit could not have been better. Our service was excellent. Our server was attentive, but not intrusive . The food was outstanding. The Chilean Sea Bass melts in your mouth, the salad was delicious. My dining partner had the Salmon and was a bit skeptical about the curry sauce, so he requested it on the side. Later he said he really enjoyed it as the curry was very subtle, not strong at all. Dessert was so tasty. It was so nice that the owner and chef Mossimo came to our table, introduced himself and was very gracious. We are looking to make this one of our favorites and frequent places to celebrate good food.
Lovely evening. we hadn't been there in about a year. Food and service were excellent. Only downfall, and NOT the restaurants fault, was when 2 couples were seated next to us and one of the women proceeded to very loudly talk about something not appropriate at a dinner setting. It was actually quite gross.
Was in the area for a concert at the Ruth Eckard Hall. Stopped here for lunch before the show. Service very good. Waitress, Michelle, was top notch. She was very attentive. Food plentiful for the price. Had leftovers to bring back to hotel. Would dine here again.
Two couples ordered the veal in a cream sauce and two, the lobster ravioli. They were excellent choices and we recommend the restaurant for an interesting and diverse menu. The wine list is daunting in size and price and, I think, pretentious. If you are conscious of costs, the Chilean wines were very good and reasonable. The waiter hovered too much and we felt pressured by his somewhat overbearing approach. Overall, we would return because the food was good.
I thought I had been to every type of Italian restaurant but... Massimo's is fantastic, with a very creative menu (never thought I'd say that about Italian), authentically and expertly prepared. We had the opportunity to meet/speak with Massimo who is also the chef; yes, he's the real deal and takes extraordinary pride in what he serves, which shows. The food is first-class, and has combinations you would not expect. Everyone was VERY pleased with their meal. In addition, the two wine experts at our table (and they truly are experts!) said this may be the best wine list they've ever seen -- anywhere -- and they've have both been to the best restaurants on several continents. Want Screaming Eagle? He's got it, along with a lot more. Hint: Speak to Massimo before you order your wine and let him direct you to bottles you may like. He suggested a bottle to us after we had already had one and it was better, and less expensive. Overall: A world class meal. We'll be back, and often. P.S. Yes, it's in a strip mall...do NOT let that deter you.
