This was a one time of my favorites, not any more. Food is so-so and price too high for quality.
Great food choices for the breakfast buffet. Staff will also cook you a customized omelet in the kitchen.
The restaurant is not open for lunch. They have a small buffet in the lobby where you grab and go. Walked out.
delicious food, good wine and a nice space. easy to have a conversation and the staff doesn't rush you out
The food here is average or slighly above. Its the poor service that made this a notable experience. Started with one waiter who took our order. A second waiter arrived and said he was taking over so we had to order again. Both waiters promptly disappeared. Food was delivered by the kitchen staff. We finished our drinks, were never offered more, water was never refilled and ordered an appetizer that never came. Had to wait 20 minutes after we finished eating to ask the hostess for our bill. After paying I had to give my card to another tables server. Altogether it felt like having customers was a real bother to them.
Food interesting and good quality although quite expensive. Servers nice but not engaged. Atmosphere attractive but lacked energy.
My party and I were in San Francisco for the holidays. We were staying at a nearby hotel. We did not want an expensive meal. I read the reviews and also solicited help from the concierge at the hotel where we were staying. It was difficult to discern what restaurants were open on Christmas. The reviews for MaSo were decent and it was walking distance from our hotel. The service was great but the food was meh. We had salads first - the romaine on my Caesar was very bitter and the other salad had slimy greens for a portion of the salad. I had the Christmas special which featured a filet and lobster tail. This entree was fine but not remarkable. Our other entree was the blackened flounder which was so-so. My special came with a special chocolate chestnut dessert. The cake was dry on my first bite but it did improve after that.
Wonderfully warm atmosphere and a rare find that allowed us in on short notice. Order the yam fries with aeoli sauce.
My wife and I went here for her birthday dinner and it was very good. Service was great and all were very friendly. Food was above average as we had the Kobe meatloaf and the burger. Was $60 for two of us without drinks so pricing was solid in SF.
My companion and i had lunch and we chose the crab cake and the lobster club sandwich. we picked the stars on the menu. The crabcake has just enough seasoning so you can taste the freshness of the crabmeat. And the lobster club! Darn big chunks of lobster in every bite, the bread is thick country bread so it is really filling. I highly recommend these 2 items on the menu.
Service is attentive and cordial. Our server greeted us with a big smile which started things off great.
We booked a reservation here and the hostess told us we could "sit at the bar or leave" as there was a private event. Not sure why they bothered accepting reservations. Our server didn't even approach our table for 20 minutes then never returned unt we had finished our meal for several minutes. Wouldn't recommend.
Comfortable space. Nice atmosphere. Attentive staff. Excellent food. It was too warm outside to eat, but would really like nice. Nice setup and is very popular. Generally stay away from hotel restaurants, but this is worth it.
This was good place to have lunch/brunch in San Francisco. Great service, and excellent location. Only "but" we have was that for a Saturday, many people want a true lunch menu and this was mostly brunch items..not a big selection for lunch!
Servers we're inattentive and we felt like they didn't want to take our order. The Resturant was pretty empty, yet many of the tables still has food from previous guest.
MaSo had all the ingredients for a great experience- great menu, location, decor. But a dud. We've dined at Trace which has similar attributes but is really great. Go figure. And go somewhere else. It's not that it's bad, it's just not good.
Didn't do a great job confirming my OpenTable reservation at breakfast. May need to make a point of it.
Beautiful atmosphere, service spot on, food yummy! Filet was "melt in your mouth" good, salmon cooked perfectly "was to die for"! Can't wait to go back!
Frankly, really average for the pricing, and did not even get any OpenTable dining points to boot. There are just too many good restaurants in the Market-Mission area to expect anyone besides Westin Hotel guests to eat here.
Surprisingly tasty food for a hotel restaurant. Had heard a lot about this place and finally got around to trying it. Not a huge selection, but I was able to find something I liked and it turned out to taste really great =)
I attended MaSo last night with friends (one of my friends was staying at the Westin and I thought I might as well try it. and was very happy that it was such inviting place with fabulous food for a light palate or a foodie's heart! I had the buttermilk fried chicken and since my mom was a southerner, she would have wept tears of joy! That along with a wonderful house cab, appetizers and the chocolate cake with chocolate almond ice cream AND warm chocolate sauce - are you all trying to hurt me? Fabulous and my friends had a wonderful time too. A little noisy because there was a group meeting there behind us, but it was nice to have such a group who were enjoying as much as we were. Please keep up the good work!
I dined at many better (and price comparable) restaurants in San Fran and was disappointed when I arrived to learn this was a hotel restaurant. Very dead and service was very slow. However, our mains were delicious and they accommodated for my friends gluten free needs.
I attended a birthday lunch with several colleagues this week, and the lunch was spectacular! The Meat Loaf, Pumpkin Pasta/Skirt Steak, Salmon, Pumpkin Squash Soup, and Crabcakes....I give up, the ENTIRE menu is delish and each dish presentable and tastefully prepared, even the BREAD, which is warm, delicious and you definitely want to enjoy that experience!
I highly recommend MaSo for a business meal, event, or meal with friends and family; there is a place for everyone to be accommodated. Bon Appétit
Was pleasantly surprised! Food was really good and the service was excellent. We'll be back!
Reasonably priced for a hotel restaurant.
I decided to try Maso for lunch with a colleague because it is fairly near the office. We were underwhelmed. The "ceviche" (which is really more of a tartare) was good. We wanted to order the fried chilcken salad (having read good things about the fried chicken) but they had run out. (Huh? It was 1:00 and the place was not busy.) So I ordered the blackened flounder and my colleague ordered the meatloaf. The flounder was too spicy, too greasy and whatever flavor the fish might have had was clobbered by the sauce. (The mashed potatoes were good, though.) My colleague picked at her meatloaf before finally admitting it wasn't good. Service was only OK -- refilling the ice tea would have been welcome. So, I won't be back.
The service was terrible, and the food was not much better. Great concepts behind it all, but terrible execution. I can't think of a restaurant in SF I'd rather avoid.
Loud crowd in bar. Food order was incorrect. Tables not cleared. Average food at gourmet prices. It's just a loud bar with food.
The food was totally delicious and the service was great! :-)
Elevated southern cuisine without an elevated price point
Ambience is slightly upscale without being stuffy
Only downfall is the waitstaff - they are obviously servers not accustomed to working in a restaurant environment
My chef Partner always works on Christmas Day, and his schedule makes reservation options limited. Of course, Open Table had several places to choose from (thankfully!) but we were so delighted to find this gem so close to our hotel. And completely last minute.
Our table was ready a little early and we were seated immediately. Our server was so helpful in choosing from the delicious choices offered. A fantastic meal in a beautiful setting, combined with über-friendly staff, made this Holiday meal an outing to remember.
The fried chicken is to die for. Being Christmas day, they had a special holiday turkey meal which was a huge portion of excellent food. The (male) host was especially welcoming and warm. Nice table spacing.
Kind of a shame - wait staff was quick
and attentive, portions were ample, but
the good was just plain average. There was
a genuine effort at better food, but no
Every year about 20,000 geoscientists descend on Moscone for a geek feast. Many of us are also foodies. This was my first time at MaSo's and I'm very enthused to have discovered my new favorite place to eat 'n meet. I had the sugar pie pumpkin soup and the kale and arugula salad and swooned with delight. The soup came in it's own pitcher and was added to the little mound of purple barley and micro sprouts, keeping it hot until served. The salad had a just-right combination of pistachios and dates laced with a rich balsamic. The wait staff's attentiveness and the quick turn-around after we placed our order was noted and appreciated by our whole party. It helped us focus on our meeting instead of lunch logistics. I like Maso!!
Food is very good, but service was sub par on Thanksgiving. The pre fix menu was good value for the price. Just wish the gratuity had not been included as our service was lacking in many ways
The truffle fries and burger are delicious! The diver scallop entree is wonderful as well. The service was extremely attentive, friendly and professional.
Right near Moscone so the bar is buzzing with conference attendees. That's not a bad thing, just very distinctive atmosphere.
Our waiter was so kind and patient. Was very helpful to our party who had special food needs. Thanks for a great evening!
I took the wife to this place mainly because I heard so much about it. What I noticed, was the lack of people. Food, well, it was okay???? We had the $15. crabcake. Very nice, but not hot and lacked flavor. Very beautiful how it was presented on the plate. For dinner, I ordered the $38. BBQ Rib Eye. Well, thought it was barbequed. I might of had been grilled. They put bbq sauce on the steak which was very under cooked. I asked between pink and red. It came out purple. I was skeptic about taking it back. I've heard so may nightmare stories of what coks do with the food before it come back to your plate. I took it home and nuked it. The bread they brought was awesome. We spent $113. on us. I want my money back.
The food and coffee were very good, but the prices were a bit astronomical. Thankfully this was for a work meeting with my mentor, because I would have passed out seeing the bill if I had to pay for it. I had the fish tacos, and the cod they used was absolutely fantastic. Very meaty, nice beer-style batter that wasn't too much, great fresh cabbage and other toppings, yummy pickled carrots on the side. My colleague had the baby crab burgers, which I had a bite of, and they were also very good. We had coffee and the passion fruit shortcake for dessert - not sure where the cake part was, as it seemed more like a pudding kind of thing. Also delicious, and the coffee came with cute little chocolate swizzle sticks. Yum!
MaSo seems quite hidden. The restaurant smelled of new renovations. The food was all right. The service was okay. Nothing extraordinary. The restaurant itself is spacious and has potential to offer fabulous fine dining but that didn't seem to be the case.
Overall the food & service were basic-- nothing outstanding.
