Mas Malo Ratings and Reviews
This was my first time to Mas Malo. I love their Silverlake location Malo. I've been there multiple times over the years and I am very delighted with their meals every time. I was NOT impressed with this new spot. The food was very average and expensive for what you get. It cost me $16 for a two taco combo for rice and beans that I didn't even want. The waitress did not explain that there would be an $4 up charge for rice and beans.
Also, we were unaware that were were going to get free chips and salsa so paid $8 for salsa and chips that ended up being too spicy for the other two at the table. Nor is it indicated on the menu that it would be spicy.
I also had a HUGE issue with the bathrooms. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned since they had opened in the morning if that and their hand dryer was DISGUSTING. It looks like it may have never been cleaned. My ex-boyfriend has worked in many kitchens over the years and he told me that if there's a clean bathroom there's a clean kitchen and if you see a dirty kitchen it may be an indication that their kitchen is not up to par.
I've attached photos. Judge for yourself. I will never be back to this location until they get it together.
We attended Mas Malo for my girlfriend’s 32nd birthday and had a great time. I ordered a couple spicy margaritas and the skirt steak (Medium Rare); my steak was phenomenal. I’ve told everyone about it. I was impressed and surprised.
In addition, service was decent, I’ve worked for restaurants in the past so I’m pretty patient, but one round of 5/6 drinks took 22 minutes. Nonetheless, we all had a great time. Sitting upstairs was really cool too. Thank you for having us.
The food was decent - the service was not. We were here a couple years ago and had a similar experience. We thought after a few years it would eventually improve. Maybe we just have bad luck. Our server seemed bothered to wait on us. Very mechanical responses and no eye contact. The restaurant is in a busy area of town so I do not think they feel they need to put in much effort because business comes easily. We had a better meal and service at Rosa Mexicano (a chain) a few blocks away.
Maybe the worst service I've had in LA. We had to hunt our waiter down to even pay him. We asked him for water twice and then had to ask the busser. (Who promptly brought it over.) We made the same cocktail order twice. And he seemed irritated that we were even there to begin with.
Lovely building, but we ate downstairs because it was quieter., the room was also lovely...our waiter was the best ever.....the cocktails delicious, guacamole very good, very authentic tasting food, we all loved our meals.............will go back...........
Great service from our server Josh. We had brunch with $20 Bottomless sangria plus guacamole and tacos. Everything tasted great and good portion size. The Mariachi band plays one Sunday a month. They were amazing and fun and very loud! Would love to see and hear them again!
The food was good, upscale Mexican with some unique dishes. The prices were somewhat high. The real negative was the service. The salad took a long time to get and then when we weren't half-way done with the salads the main course came. They were in a rush to move people in and out. I don't need to go back.
The vegan dishes I had were very good. However my wife felt her chicken dish had a sweet taste to the sauce that drowned the dish and was not appealing. We both agree the pinto beans were far tastier than the black beans. The black beans tasted like they were cooked as an after thought to just add another item on the menu. Most of all the drinks we had were excellent. The Tequila Manhattan and the Spicy cucumber drink were very flavorful and lived up to expectations. The service by Josh was excellent and attentive. He gets 6 stars on a 5 star rating. The ambience was lively but not too loud where we could hear our conversation We will return and give Mas Malo another chance. Also try the kale salad. It was tasty and filling.
We were seeing a comedian at the Ace Hotel and were looking for a close restaurant downtown. My husband and I love Mexican food, so we are always looking for places to try when we are in a new area. The ambiance was dark and romantic (swanky for those of us from the OC) and what we found very LA. The service was great; helpful with suggestions, prompt with orders, and timely with food delivery. The Spicy Cucumber Margarita was a hit at our table, but I had the Organic which was delish too. We highly recommend the guacamole with pomegranate seeds, the bacon wrapped shrimp, and the pumpkin enchiladas. So glad we chose this restaurant.
This dinner was our third visit - and it was quite nice. We'll definitely be going back for more... Food is inventive and tasty but true to Mexican roots. Cocktails are amazing - I recommend the spicy cucumber margarita... Had the grilled cod tacos - well prepared and delicious. My friend had the skirt steak - a bit chewy for my tastes - but very flavorful. Service was friendly and attentive.
Food is always amazingly good! The bacon wrapped shrimp is one of my favorite dishes! Overall the dining was good, we're regulars but this was the first time we went for the bottomless mimosas. It took us a while at first to get another round of drinks but afterwards we got them with decent timing. The waitress was nice enough to serve me a plate that wasn't in the menu which was a plus! I definitely suggest this place!
