Fantastic, caring, and knowledgeable staff. Superbly creative dishes and fresh fish. Cuts were appropriately portioned.
This was a great dining experience. Definitely recommend. Came for a special occasion and was impressed with the quality of the food, the presentation, and freshness of the ingredients. The staff were also incredibly friendly. Would come again!
I cannot begin to describe the incredible meal my partner and I had. The food was outstanding, the service was impeccable, the restaurant was quaint and quiet. Everything was perfect. The sake pairings complimented the food perfectly. Our server ls level of passion and engagement was perfect for the meal, deeply knowledgeable and approachable, but not overbearing. Every dish was made and presented with incredible detail and care. If you’re reading this, you must dine here. Trust me.
My partner and I found Maruya online while looking for sushi in the mission with good reviews. What a treat to discover this place! The food was outstanding, the service was perfect and we had the back patio to ourselves for two hours (which was unbelievable for a Thursday evening in the time of Covid with food this incredible). It was a delightful sensory experience and the perfect setting for some serious discussions that my partner and I needed to have. We ordered a bottle of sake to go with our meal and were offered a sake tasting, as well. Highly recommend this place.
went here for my partners birthday. It was amazing! great service, great food and thoughtful presentation. I would highly recommend Maruya!
Taking a friend out for a birthday celebration and attending a nearby show at Lost Church I picked it for the location.I did not realize it was not a la carte and offered fixed price sushi starting at $86.00.We chose a wonderful vegetarian Buddhist Monk with 8 dishes at a lower prices
.Delicious and very attractive in its presentation. They evensurprised my friend with a lovely dessert.Service was good but on the leisurely side.I want to save up and go back for one of the sushi specialties
Great experience! Memorable
I'm a vegetarian so I picked this restaurant for the buddhist meal and the vegetarian rolls. It did not disappoint. Overall great experience, excellent service.
Great Sushi restaurant. Fresh and presentation is delicate.
Restaurant was nicely bright. Our waitress was very helpful. Food was beautifully presented and delicious.
My wife and I recently came here for our anniversary dinner. Right off the bat, the server that greeted was super friendly and polite and sat us down right away even though we were 30 mins early for our reservation.
We both did the chef's omakase and at first what we thought was a little bit pricey turned out to be worth every penny. All the courses the chef cooked or brought out for us was super delicious. The nigiri portion of the course was hands down the best. Every piece felt like it melted in your mouth. It was so delicious!!! I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great omakase restaurant or selection.
Also wanted to mention that it's best being the first ones there. Since my wife and I were early (pretty much got there right when they opened) we got a pretty "intimate" experience. It was just us 2 at the bar with chef and watching him do his thing. Felt really nice and romantic. Once other parties start showing up, the place definitely got more louder but by that time, we were already on our way out.
What a wonderful evening! Excellent food - from the vegetarian menu to the set omakase, fun, delicious, surprising.
In what may be the best bargain in San Francisco, Maruya offers a vegan shojin ryori feast for $28. Food was very tasty, the service was great in a quiet comfortable setting. I think that Maruya is as of yet undiscovered especially by the vegan community as it was very quiet. Meanwhile, a few blocks away Shizen has no reservations available until February. I'd recommend that some of the Shizen faithful try Maruya.
Richard, Thank you for the 5-Stars. It made our day. I want to share a background story of our Shojin Ryori. The inspiration was from a visit in one of the temples in Kamakura, Japan. We looked at the Japanese monks cuisine, and it was a plant based diet. We thought it was a wonderful idea to introduce it to our SF vegetarians/vegan guests. Happy Holidays!
Truly a wonderful experience! Not just the amazing food, also the perfect, gentle service. But the food is amazing. Flavors plus art!
We knew that its not a top rated Japanese place, but it was decently rated and had availability for a Saturday night. the food we very ordinary. the price was very high for its quality. the rice for the rolls and nigiris are too hard... overall, won't go back and don't recommend it
Very fresh fish! Everything was great about Maruya! Definitely will return
Always great.
Wonderful new chef!
Food is really poor for how much you pay. If you’re looking for Omasake, would recommend Kusakabe in FiDi instead
Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed our meal -- the nigiri course was very good. But the rest of the courses were not that good which made us feel it was tremendously overpriced for what we got overall.
Always great!! Love sitting at the Bar.
Beautiful and interesting presentations.
Maruya continues to innovate. In addition to have truly the best quality sushi in San Francisco, the most premium fish ingredient, it now also has a delightful weekday vegetarian menu, inspired by travels to Buddhist heritage sites in Japan. For me, the food is beautiful, tasty, and very Grammable, that's right, perfect for Instagram. It never fails to delight me to open a bowl of soup with "cherry blossom pedals" made of carrots and daiko, and glistening baby shrimp in the chawanmushi and of course the buried treasure of gingko nuts. This is the only place in SF I would eat silver skinned fish, which has a stronger ocean taste, but at this place, it is umami. Did you know Mackerel has 324% Daily Value of Potassium. I would recommend it for foodies, locals, and travelers from Japan, China, Europe and all parts of United States. The food is that good.
Chef's Omakase was delicious. Very glad we decided to opt for the full offering.
What an utter pleasure! Not only was the food excellent, the staff were remarkably kind, the presentation was remarkable and the chefs were on point! A dining experience like this would cost twice as much or more in the NYC area! I cannot recommend this place highly enough, especially since they were accommodating of my 7 month old niece, who was an unexpected guest. You must put this on your list of places to eat in San Francisco!
Traditional Japanese sushi experience. Absolutely amazing.
Delicious intimate restaurant
Very nice service
Outstanding!
Nice celebration for friends anniversary.
A lot of fish were pre-cut before the arrival and the sashimi box is even pre-assembled in the fridge. We got our freshwater eel on second course which should come towards the end. Order of nigiri is messed up between different guests. The whole omakase experience is somewhat disappointing
We paid $175 for the Valentine’s Day special (normal omakase is $95) and the overall food quality is just not matched with the price. Would not suggest come for omakase
An amazing place with the best quality sushi in San Francisco. It is more traditional high-end Japanese style. The sushi rice is artfully crafted, and each fish comes with the highest quality. I highly recommend trying the scallop here, also exotic ones like sea eel, barracuda and chef's pride and unusual taste palette like gizzard shad, mackerels (least fishy, best prepared here). Not to mention all the appetizers and small eats are beautifully crafted, and instagram perfect. I personally love having sake with gobo chips. The sake selection here is very high end and unique. Best sushi quality here.
Charming place. Delicious fish. Beautiful presentation. Service was perfect.
The food was excellent! Awesome service! I highly recommend and would definitely come back again. I also love going to a nice restaurant with a nice and clean restroom 😁
This is the second year that my husband and I have participated in San Francisco's Restaurant week. The Tasting menu is always such a great deal and the food is so fresh and beautifully presented. We love to watch the sushi chefs create each individual boxes with an array of fresh fish and tasty delicacies. Each course is well presented with a unique dishware which is presented with an artistic flair. The restaurant is located in a inconspicuous area in the Mission district. We can't wait to come back again!
The food was really good, and the sashimi was so fresh and decent for the price. It’s hard to get a reservation with them, but totally worth it.
The chefs were super friendly, greeted us with a big grin on their faces. We felt very welcomed. The food was amazing and beautifully presented. The servers were very attentive - noticed right away when our tea ran out and brought us at least 3 more rounds of tea. Everything was delicious! I can't wait to come back.
Fantastuc sf restaurant week experience
We went for restaurant week 2019. The overall experience was great. Sushi chefs prepared the courses nicely and the waiters were very attentive. The cuts of fish weren't the best (ie: no toro, salmon not salmon belly, no hamachi. Just regular salmon, tuna, mackerel, etc. Basic cuts.) but still very tasty and well prepared and presented. This was expected since the cost was only $65. Non-experienced sushi eaters probably wouldn't even notice. Overall, a great experience for the price.
Great food but restaurant was way too cold. Everyone had their jackets on
Food and service was excellent. However, we were disappointed when the host sat an intoxicated street person, who drank from his own liter of vodka that he drank, yelled f-bombs and
I apologize you were disappointed and we were too. Our staff member greeted and sat a walk-in. He did not seem to be a "street person." He carried a plastic bag with him. We do not judge. But as soon as he exhibited a disruptive behavior I gave him verbal warning. A few minutes later, I noticed that he pulled out his own bottle from his bag. I was on my way to talk to him when you approached me. Out of respect for him and for others, I quietly escorted him out. Thank you for the 4-star
Great omakase course and great service!
The ambiance was on point, felt like being in Japan. It was very enjoyable watching the chefs skillfully working in parallel.
The starters were a bit bland to my palate and the rice texture was a bit too chewy for my preference, but I am not a nigiri connoisseur. The nigiri cuts were fresh and tasty. The staff was friendly and attentive.
