In 2013, Maruya was one of the first Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area to specialize in omakase. We focus on presenting the traditional Japanese style of dining which encompasses on the quality of fish, on food presentation and simplicity.

Nice celebration for friends anniversary.
A lot of fish were pre-cut before the arrival and the sashimi box is even pre-assembled in the fridge. We got our freshwater eel on second course which should come towards the end. Order of nigiri is messed up between different guests. The whole omakase experience is somewhat disappointing
We paid $175 for the Valentine’s Day special (normal omakase is $95) and the overall food quality is just not matched with the price. Would not suggest come for omakase
An amazing place with the best quality sushi in San Francisco. It is more traditional high-end Japanese style. The sushi rice is artfully crafted, and each fish comes with the highest quality. I highly recommend trying the scallop here, also exotic ones like sea eel, barracuda and chef's pride and unusual taste palette like gizzard shad, mackerels (least fishy, best prepared here). Not to mention all the appetizers and small eats are beautifully crafted, and instagram perfect. I personally love having sake with gobo chips. The sake selection here is very high end and unique. Best sushi quality here.
Charming place. Delicious fish. Beautiful presentation. Service was perfect.
The food was excellent! Awesome service! I highly recommend and would definitely come back again. I also love going to a nice restaurant with a nice and clean restroom 😁
This is the second year that my husband and I have participated in San Francisco's Restaurant week. The Tasting menu is always such a great deal and the food is so fresh and beautifully presented. We love to watch the sushi chefs create each individual boxes with an array of fresh fish and tasty delicacies. Each course is well presented with a unique dishware which is presented with an artistic flair. The restaurant is located in a inconspicuous area in the Mission district. We can't wait to come back again!
The food was really good, and the sashimi was so fresh and decent for the price. It’s hard to get a reservation with them, but totally worth it.
The chefs were super friendly, greeted us with a big grin on their faces. We felt very welcomed. The food was amazing and beautifully presented. The servers were very attentive - noticed right away when our tea ran out and brought us at least 3 more rounds of tea. Everything was delicious! I can't wait to come back.
Fantastuc sf restaurant week experience
We went for restaurant week 2019. The overall experience was great. Sushi chefs prepared the courses nicely and the waiters were very attentive. The cuts of fish weren't the best (ie: no toro, salmon not salmon belly, no hamachi. Just regular salmon, tuna, mackerel, etc. Basic cuts.) but still very tasty and well prepared and presented. This was expected since the cost was only $65. Non-experienced sushi eaters probably wouldn't even notice. Overall, a great experience for the price.
Great food but restaurant was way too cold. Everyone had their jackets on
Food and service was excellent. However, we were disappointed when the host sat an intoxicated street person, who drank from his own liter of vodka that he drank, yelled f-bombs and
Great omakase course and great service!
The ambiance was on point, felt like being in Japan. It was very enjoyable watching the chefs skillfully working in parallel.
The starters were a bit bland to my palate and the rice texture was a bit too chewy for my preference, but I am not a nigiri connoisseur. The nigiri cuts were fresh and tasty. The staff was friendly and attentive.
Had the chef's omakase. Pretty delicious meal. Portions were adequate. Abience was pretty intimate. Overall a great experience
The space is much smaller than I anticipated. The lights were very bright. The food presentation was a bit over the top possibly because they were serving similar omasake that you can get elsewhere for half the price. The food was fresh, but nothing standout. I would say save your money and go elsewhere.
Outstanding experience - the best sushi I’ve ever had - fresh, flavorful, complex. The service is incredible and the chefs are warm, engaging and an absolute pleasure to watch while they craft each dish in front of you.
Authentic Japanese experience.
We ordered the "Chef's Choice" omakase and it was amazing! Incredibly fresh fish, very attentive service, and a soothing ambiance.
Wonderful service and amazing food! Great to be able to watch it being prepared in front of you and explained when being served!
Chef Tonai made a special ice sculpture dessert for my parents joint birthday dinner. It was amazing.
Always a wonderful treat. Just surprisingly good. Every time.
Food was prompt and well balanced. Omakase price, quality, service was really exceptional
Not up to the mark or other former or current Michelin starred Sushi restaurants
Great service, very well paced omakase. Enjoyed every bit of it.
My girlfriend and I went to celebrate a special occasion and it did not disappoint. We were sat at the counter opposite the chef which was a great view throughout. It was incredible to watch the different dishes being prepared in such an immaculate and creative way. The food was fantastic - we had the Nigiri Omakase - and each course was unique and delicious. My girlfriend had he hot sake alongside whereas I went for some cold sake - both were delicious. If you’re unsure on what to have, the waiter will help you out with some tasting to see what works. It was a nice touch and made sure we picked correctly. The service was excellent - friendly and attentive - and to cap it off, they brought out a matcha tiramisu at the end of the evening, on the house, since it was a special day. All in all - a wonderful evening.
Good food, but note it is a fixed menu.
Always the best!
Incredible! Always delivers a high quality experience.
I am so disappointed，the restaurant is not very well with this high price. Server is not professional，I expected them a lot，but… I wont go there again. I suggest they should train their servers better.
Best japonese food experience! The chef have choose our menu course and we were surprised every time with some delicius fishes from japan! We’re lucky to be there with just one more table occupied, so we could enjoy all attention from both the chef and the waiter.
Don't make a reservation unless you want to steep yourself in an extraordinary food experience that will not be short or easily forgotten. Authentic, creative, brilliant and delicious. Do it, seriously
The restaurant is housed in a small narrow space, the interiors are very nice. The neighborhood is rough. The main dining room is so close to the entrance. When the door is open, you can feel the cold draft from outside. This is typical SF weather. That is why I took 1 star away.
The service is impeccable as the traditional Japanese restaurant. This restaurant is a very traditional Japanese sushi restaurant. You can't find rolls or other seaweed salad.
The restaurant give several options of omakase. We ordered one sushi and one sashimi omakase. They kitchen served us sashimi dishes first then sushi and let us split our orders. That was a very nice gesture. However, they use the same 4 fish for both menu. When we had the sushi entree, we were disappointed because we had those fish already from the sashimi menu. That is the reason I took 1 star away. The chef should change a bit in this sushi menu to provide more inspiration.
i had wanted to try this restaurant for a while and finally got to go two nights ago. It was an absolutely pleasant experience. I had the $90 nigiri tasting menu. The appetizers were very well presented followed by sushi pieces meticulously prepared by executive chef Tonai-San with just enough rice so the freshness of the fish could be enjoyed. The only disappointment was the soup at the end which did not have much taste. The tiramisu dessert with a few red beans at the bottom made it unique and my friend from Toronto loved it. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend this restaurant.
I have been wanting to try Maruya for a long time, and now that I have, I am never going to eat sashimi anywhere else! So velvety and fresh-just exquisite! I love the quiet ambiance and artistry with which the dishes are presented. My husband and I enjoyed a 2 hour relaxing meal on a Saturday evening, and never felt rushed or crowded out. Excellent value--we will be back!
Try the green tea tiramisu!
Veeerrrryyyyyy slow 3 hour long (literally) service and underwhelming food for supposedly high end Japanese food.
Food and service were superb. Partner and I had the $65 omakase menu and were very happy with the quality and amount of food. The couple at the table next to us got the way more expensive omakase and we think we got the better deal. Ambience-wise, we felt the lighting was just a bit brighter than it needed to be, but that's nitpicking. Not a cheap date, but if you're looking to splurge on a fantastic meal you could do a lot worse than Maruya!
