Martyrs Steakhouse is Taos gem built inside a gorgeous historic adobe building that gives off a charming and relaxing vibe. Inside, the clean white table clothes and polished wooden floors provide a fantastic backdrop for the delicious steaks and other dishes served at Martyrs Steakhouse.
Choose your cut of high-quality beef steak and have it cooked to your specifications. Surf and turf is also available with a beef filet and lobster tail combination meal. If you don't want steak, you can order chicken, fish, duck, burgers, seafood or portabella dishes, instead. Various seasonal vegetables complement your meal. Wonderful time, as always, at Martyr's. We always bring our visitors here and this time we brought a foodie who placed his experience in the top three of his life! The service was superb. The ambiance is always a pleasure to experience. We will be back again. And again. And again.
The outdoor dining was very pleasant. It was a bit noisy because the outside dining is on the main street. The heaters and umbrella lights made the evening pleasant as the sun went down. I had the chicken confit which was delicious. Two members of our party had the halibut special. They both thought the fish was overcooked and mushy, but they thought the soft shell crab was perfect.
We have eaten here a couple of times and always enjoyed the food and service. Not sure what happened this time, but my wife and I both ordered the lamb chops, which we both ordered medium. What we recieved instead were what I can truthfully say were the toughest lamb chops that I had ever eaten. They did comp us dessert, but by then I was too exhausted from fighting with the "ram" chops to even eat it there, so we took it back to our hotel.
This attractive and convenient place was highly recommended by our hotel. It starts out great in terms of greeting, ambience, menu and wine list. It, for us, went downhill quickly. Very friendly, but very slow, service followed by inappropriate temperatures of wines. An excellent salad was followed by mains that were much better on the menu than on the plate. The components described on the menu were,in fact, present on the plate but underdone on one red meat dish, overdone on another and finished with no apparent attention. For example:grilled mushrooms accompanying bison tenderloin were probably good mushrooms. BUT, dry grilled with no oil, butter, seasoning or anything yielded mushroom jerky. It is, however, a very nice place with an impressive menu and prices to match.
My colleague and I made reservations for a business dinner (mid week) and arrived about 15 minutes prior to our reservation time. We parked and went in what we thought was the front door. It turned out to be the back or side door. We met the bartender first and he was very helpful.
The bartender found the person who was to guide us to the table and engaged us in conversation until the person was able to guide us to our table.
Once we arrived at our table the server approached and introduced herself. She provided menu's, the wine list and went over a few of the specials. We then ordered our bottle of wine and an appetizer or two. Now the waiting began.
We were visited several times over the next 50 minutes by the gentleman who refilled our water. He was the most attentive of all of the staff with the exception of the bartender. We never received our wine or the appetizers. We were either ignored or forgotten about by our server and the rest of our staffed. Either way we didn't see our server for 50 minutes. Finally we were frustrated enough that we moved ourselves to the bar and ended up having dinner at the bar.
We ordered two small plates to start: Steak Tartare and Raw Blue Point Oysters. From there the bartender suggested we try one of their house wines by the glass (it was excellent) and I ordered the 8oz filet and garlic mashed potatoes. The food was very good. The food is a bit over priced for what we received - but my opinion may have been a bit jaded due to the extremely poor service earlier in the evening.
This review is greatly impacted by the initial poor service and the lack of attention by the entire staff with the exception of the bartender who was excellent!
I would visit this location again to give them a chance to redeem themselves but that is the only reason I would go back. Given the higher prices and poor service it simply isn't the type of establishment that I would choose to frequent often.
If you are eating alone at Martyrs be prepared for possible slow to poor service. I travel to Taos for work and decided to try Martyrs Steakhouse on a weeknight. I requested outside seating and the waiter obliged. The service was very slow and at times I waited 10 mins or more just for water. The restaurant was not busy at all and I was the only patron on the patio. The entire dinner took approx. 2 hours. The food was very good but the service was poor.
While vacationing in Taos, we went to Martyrs to celebrate Fathers' Day and my husband's birthday. We hoped for a lovely dinner and expected it would be on the high expense side. We were correct about the second. We ate outdoors on the patio because inside seating was too hot. Outdoors we had a choice of sitting near the street or near the music speakers turned up to drown out street noise. The food was good but not special enough for the $$$ rating. We chose our wine based on the sauce, confirming it before we placed our wine order. When it came it was w/o the sauce. After a long wait to speak with our server about it, we were offered the sauce as a side serving. We were very disappointed in the food, service, ambiance and noise level.
First visit to Martyrs based on recommendations about the hamburger and it did not disappoint. it was accompanied by a variety of embellishments, and a big pocket of French Fries. The server was very friendly but seemed a bit out of her element when it came to wine and timely service. Overall a good, not great experience.
We live in Houston but have property in Red River, NM. We stay in our favorite B&B in Santa Fe, El Farolito, when we come to NM and discovered a couple years ago a restaurant right next door to the B&B, Restaurant Martin. It is phenomenal. It is a must go every time we get close to Santa Fe. The chef is genius at marrying various flavors and textures to make each dish one of kind. We used to come to NM once or twice a year but now we come just for Restaurant Martin 3 to 4 times a year. Each time we come the menu is always different and is continually changing for new food experiences. We've gone to a lot of high end restaurants through out the world but this NM gem is at the top of the heap. Bravo Martin.
We celebrated Father's Day at Martyr's and the food was -- as usual -- superb. The problem we experienced this time, however, was the pace of service and relative lack of attention we received from our server and others in charge of food delivery. The restaurant was nowhere near capacity, and yet we lingered for many minutes as we awaited each new appearance of staff.
It is known to visitors of Taos that the pace of life is slower than in other, more urban regions of the US. A prompt, attentive wait staff, however, is expected at any such dining establishment and has always been the practice at Martyr's in our past experience. Perhaps the manager did not call in the proper number of employees on this particular Father's Day.
We liked the atmosphere at the restaurant, but it took forever, 30 min plus to get the "special", which was golden snapper. I ordered a Grey Goose lemon drop martini and the bartender forgot to add the simple syrup so it was like sucking on a lemon. I had to ask for a shot of simple syrup and you would have thought they would just make a new drink, but they didn't. When the snapper finally arrived it was very overcooked, a thick chunk of rubbery fish. It had a snow crab on top, but they just deep fried the whole crab, which was weird. Even the diners around us who ordered it were picking it up and looking at it like, am I supposed to eat this whole crab? All in all, not a great experience, disappointing.
Hostess Sophia will welcome you to the most delectable dining in Taos. The lobster bisque is the stuff of legend. Beef tournadoes and the salmon were fabulous. Locals talk of the chicken confit till your mouth waters.
A dining experience not to be missed when in Taos. Five star without a doubt. Bravo!
Good service, Great food. I enjoy going for lunches ($8 lunch specials) and Sunday Brunch is delicious with a diverse menu. Easter Brunch this year was spectacular with a rack of lamb special. My wife enjoyed the French toast and the mamosas were great too.
I've been to this establishment several times, and it is clear that one of the wait staff has a dislike for me. I do not know his name as he's never served nor met me. Other staff have always been very polite, I don't know if he was the only waiter at the time, but it took over 10 minutes for me to get water and an additional 10 for another staff member (who was very nice) to take my order. As I was dining alone I expected speedier service, as I noticed fellow patrons getting. This was not the case, the patio was full at the time, which also had several animals and small children, but I never received a refill of water, even after my food arrived. As I noted before, I noticed fellow patrons were receiving superb service.
supermarket cut of meat with dollops of mashed potatoes and a too sweet bordelaise sauce as if to hide the average food beneath. At that price level, they should go for higher quality steak and prepare it simply...broiled to taste, serve alone, and plate the potatoes and whatnot on separate platters.
One of the dishes (lobster mac) was very tasty. The fish dish I had was dry. My wife was assured that the steak dish she had would not have much garlic as she is sensitive to it and that was simply not true. Second time - won't go back. Had to wait 45 minutes for the entrees after no appetizers or salads.
Martyrs is relatively new to Taos but what a wonderful add. Great steak, seafood, and cocktails, a lovely, warm ,and inviting space with outstanding staff and service. For a special night out or the perfect dinner with family or friends, it is a good choice when in Taos.
This is our second time here and had another fantastic romantic dinner. Our server was very professional and the pace was very relaxing. The food was a culinary delight and we are already looking forward to our next meal here. We highly recommend this restaurant.
This was our first time to visit Martyrs and it was a perfect experience! We eat out a lot and are very loyal to our hand full of favorites so it took us a bit to make the reservation. So glad we did! The food was perfect in everyway. Taste, texture, temperature,presentation! All of it! The service was attentive and friendly but never hovering. It is obvious this place is run by people who are experienced and know what they are doing. The atmosphere was so 'feel good'. We didn't want to leave! This is our new favorite and we will be back again and again!
The brunch food was mediocre and the drink too hot and spicy. The best part was the service. We are planning to take a vacation from Martyrs. We used to do six or seven birthdays there. Family has had tough steaks and the food is pretty but inconsistent in taste.
Got together to share a birthday lunch with two friends and enjoyed Martyrs very much. Both the daily special and 'from the menu' selections were served hot and beautiful. Great sea food bisque and perfect NY steak. Dessert (lemon cheesecake) was also very good. Overall: yummy!
Martyr's Steakhouse is a very special place. Great for lunch but have a CC backup for dinner. Been there on both occasions. Dinner, though pricey, was excellent and well worth the price. I had a sparkling house wine which was wonderful!....a Spanish import and top of its class. Desserts are made in-house and truly delicious. Don't know what spices they used on the veggies but they were delicious, too.
I eat here a lot, especially for lunch when my guests and I can enjoy the patio. This review is specific to dinner which my guest and I ate inside. If you haven't been, the rooms are lovely. The food was overly complex, it took forever for it to come to the table and the service was sub-par.
