Martins West Pub Ratings and Reviews
We had a larger group (7) and were seated towards the back of the restaurant, which was great. The service was a bit confusing, however as the waitress was taking appetizer orders from half of us, main dish orders from the rest, so the food was coming out in fits and bursts.
I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken is cooked in a sous vide method and the waffles were savory with herbs in them. Rather than syrup, the sauce was a savory sauce that I could not even begin to describe but was not delicious at all, and my food was room temperature at best.
My daughter ordered the fish and chips, and they tasted fine. The dessert menu pricing did not match up with the pricing in the hand out menus so there was some confusion there. This is a good place if you're interested in a mediocre attempt at being different and delicious, I've given it a few chances, and really am not interested in coming back.
Real nice servers, but not attentive once the initial order was taken. We waited forever for drink refills, the opportunity to order more bites and drinks, dessert menus, and the check. Scouting missions came up empty at times because we didn't know where the servers or the manager were hanging out. Maybe that's just the deal on a slow-ish Monday night. Everything else was awesome.
Overall the cocktails were good and the beef and lamb burgers were really good. The meat was really good quality, good size and actually cooked to medium rare! My date had the Black Pearl (rum) and I had the JNF (mescal). His was very good; mine was nondescript. Mine needed a better presentation. Came in a tall glass, no decoration. Needs improvement in these times of unique cocktails. Both had a good amount of alcohol. When we arrived it took a bit long to get waited on but she was very good after the initial introduction. We had reservations at 6:15 so it was quiet enough to have a conversation. By 7:00 a party of 18-20 had arrived and the noise level naturally rose. Decently priced, very casual, kid friendly.
The food was creative and delicious. The chicory salad was delightfully refreshing and a nice counterpoint to the savory bonemarrow starter. We ordered a wide variety of starters and one entree, the duck - which was tender and juicy, to make an eclectic, fulfilling fall meal for the entire table of 4. I highly recommend this neighborhood gem and look forward to sampling their burger next time.
The food and cocktails were great. We had the porcini croquettes, charred carrots, cauliflower fritters and shepherd pork pie. All were quite good with out of the ordinary presentations and spices. The desserts were excellent also. Will definitely go back. Service was very efficient and friendly.
Waiter had no idea what was on the menu, recommending items that weren’t there. They were then out of an item that was on the menu, after he recommeded that as well, and then charged for it anyway. The cauliflower fritters were too greasy/oily to detect any presence of cauliflower.
We visited Martin's West based on a review on KQED's Check Please. Unfortunately, we were greeted by a surely hostess which did not set a good tone. However, our server was very friendly and attentive. They have an interesting cocktail menu, my wife and I both were pleased with our choices. The pickled vegetables and dungenes deviled eggs were very tasty appetizers. We both had fish and chips...the batter on the fish was very light, similar to a tempura. The ambiance was nice, but nothing special. Overall, we enjoyed the food and would return if we were already in the area.
Overall, we had a nice time at Martins West. The cocktails are great, and their food is creative and fun. It's a very, very loud place, though, so not ideal for a date or intimate conversation. We were also surprised at how understaffed they were for a Friday evening. Our poor server had a large area/number of tables. She handled it well, but service was very slow.
Way too noisy! There was a table behind us with kids running around. I think in deference to safety I would think mgmt would develop the nerve to speak to the parents of these little darlings. What does it take? A tray of plates and food dumped on some child's head?
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Redwood. Great history, nicely decorated, food was fantastic! Only change I would consider was service. We got our salad when our meal was done because they forgot and the staff seemed stressed out. This wouldn't stop me from returning, its simply a great location and I've had great times here. I just hope next time it's less stressful on staff as this does effect how customers feel.
I have been a loyal costumer since they first opened years ago. I am now starting to withdraw my loyalty. I love the food. I love the spirits and wine. I love that I can take my teenager and toddler here. The last three times I have come in for dinner (over a year-long period), the services is becoming worse and worse. It shouldn't take 30 minutes to order food (appetizers included). A second drink should be offered long before the end of the entree in order to keep up alcohol sales. The place is loud. It is hard to have a conversation over dinner, so that last few times I have brought near-and-dear guests, I find I am apologizing for the service. Martin's needs to step up service (as it used to have in the beginning) or loose fiercely loyal clientele , like myself.
First time here since the owner change. It was just as good if not better than it used to be. A little loud, but that masked the screams of my children. No kids menu, but my kids don't really eat from a kids menu often, I just give them parts of my food.
All in all it was great!
Great gastropub in Redwood City. My hubby and I enjoyed a fabulous meal before a movie. The Mac 'N Cheese was delicious as was the steak & frites. The frites were meant to be tandoori spiced but couldn't taste any unique flavor to them. The ambiance was nice and cozy, though the space is quite big. The portions were more than enough. The cocktails were okay though their whiskey selection is extensive. My husband ordered a sazerac that came out too sweet, and even upon asking for it to be less sweet for the 2nd round, it was still too sweet. My Martins Mule was decent. I enjoyed my wine more. I'd go back and recommend to others.
Food; great - so many interesting varieties and always delicious. Drinks; great. Ambiance; fine - though the noise level is a bit high. Wait staff; ok, but it took a long time after we were seated before we were acknowledged and offered to order a drink. Martins West is a great place to eat, and we always enjoy ourselves there. It's one of our favorite standbys.
I am very happy that Martin's West has started this bottomless brunch. The food is very good, and the price is not unreasonable. While it's not something that I can afford very often, it has been nice for one holiday and one special occasion so far. I'll no doubt bring friends to try it as well, and I've spoken high praises on facebook too. I like having a place like this in my neighborhood.
Great gastropub in Redwood City!
Great atmosphere and attentive waitstaff. We've been coming here for awhile. Some can't miss items on the menu are: "The Rogue" cocktail, scotch eggs, and the poutine is to die for.
The menu changes frequently which is sometimes be a bummer, especially when you really enjoyed something on a previous visit (chicken schnitzel!). Casual and always tasty.
My husband and I rarely get to go out for a meal, so when we do, it's a real treat. This experience was no exception. I was a little concerned that the restaurant would be very busy and we wouldn't be able to easily carry on a conversation, but we ended up not having to worry about that. The atmosphere was very laid back, the staff was friendly, and the food was delicious. While it's not something we can afford often, we will definitely be back for the brunch again.
