Honest Food and a place to gather... Welcome to Mar's
Such a great find! Welcoming staff, cozy atmosphere and delicious food and cocktails- this is my new favorite spot in the neighborhood.
It was a lovely neighborhood spot that recently renovated. No idea what it previously looked like but the current establishment is quaint and authentic looking. The staff was very pleasant. We started with steamed clams followed by roasted chicken and squash tacos. The food was very tasty, the portions on the the small side. Still we had a very pleasant evening and were glad to have chosen Mar's as our spot that night.
Living a block away we pass by this corner restaurant and we were curious about visiting and experience it. The most delicious French onion soup, the lamb chops also perfect with potatoes au gratin and spinach. The chocolate ganache was also superb. These were accompanied of gulps of a 2017 Malbec that was incredibly well paired. The jazz music and the ambiance is also very good. Andreas, our waiter was excellent.
The ambiance of the restaurant is very classy and warm. It's a great spot for a date or just happy hour at the bar for some good oysters. Every dish we had was delicious and well balanced. Will definitely be coming back!
Decided to give this place a try after perusing the brunch menu. What a great decision. The restaurant is very cozy, the service was the right amount of attentive, and the food was divine. I had the poutine and wanted to sit there all day and eat more and more of it. My friend had the mushroom toast and also took advantage of the $2 oysters to have three as appetizers. She enjoyed everything, too. I cannot wait to go back to Mar’s, and encourage everyone else to go there, too.
Good Oyster Selection. Pasta was great! They accommodated our vegetarian request too for the Pappardelle.
Delicious seafood, cocktails and accommodating for us with a toddler and the family.
Food was delicious and service
Great atmos and beautiful interior styling. Slightly slow - albeit apologetic - service. Food and drink more than made up for it.
Matt the our waiter that afternoon was great. I love the food, service, music and ambiance at this location this is why I recommend it and return.
The servers were very kind but the food was way over priced and wasn't great. Steak was basic, not amazing. Overall, everything was very small and basic and they had to compensate by giving a bunch of fries and bread, which is pretty lame for the price you're paying. Feels bad for my friend who ordered the spinach pasta. It was $24 for about two bites of pasta and a mountain of sliced bread. Not sure why ppl hype this place up. It's really not that great.
Matt I believe is the waiter’s name, he’s always very nice.
They are the best in Queens hands down!
Found Mar’s on a whim and I am so glad I did! My sweetie and I were there for a date and between the ambiance and the food, plus the outstanding service, it was a fantastic night! The cocktails were amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a more competent, friendly, and attentive server. I wish I’d asked her name! Definitely a great choice for an intimate date, especially if you want to be wow’ed by all aspects of a dining experience.
Way overpriced for what you get. Add on items and up charges for most menu items also very overpriced for what you get.
I love the Steak Frites. The staff were wonderful and made a drink for me based on an old photo. It was delicious.
Amazing! Oysters are perfect...tartare is magical. If I lived nearby they would see me everyday♡
We were there over the long weekend. It was quiet. Food was excellent. Very nice mussel toast and beet salad. This could be a regular spot for us. Earns the Bib Gourmand.
Excellent food in a laid back casual environment. Friendly and efficient service.
I love Mar's so much, I almost hate to share in a writeup. Terrific local place, great cocktails, always oysters, and an imaginative, but not fussy, menu with something for everyone.
Great food. Great Ambiance. Perfect for a nice meal before seeing a movie down the street.
Brunch with my sister. Very nice and bartender was very friendly and polite.
Good service, ok food. Really small portions. Nice ambiance. I would come back for a drink at the bar
Amazing brunch. Beautiful bar -woodwork is amazing. Great service. Overall, superb experience. GF OPTIONS!!!!!!
Service was subpar to say the least.
Wonderful restaurant, have been several times. Love the food and neighborhood vibe. Music was a little loud for my taste but station changed as it got past Happy Hour.
Definitely a keeper.
My wife and I have had many an enjoyable evening at Mar's. We were here recently on a "date" night, post-Valentine's Day frenzy. The oysters were great, as usual, the entrees, sides and drinks were amazing. The service could have been slightly more attentive, but we were just worried parents with kids at home we wanted to get back to without taking too bi of a dent on babysitting costs... Overall, wonderful experience.
Went for valentine’s day and were seated practically on top of couples next to us. We politely requested being seated elsewhere but were only offered an even more cramped spot. We ordered cocktails, the bourbon and berry drink was excellent, but happy hour prices were inexplicably not honored which was disappointing. There was a required price fix, which I called to inquire about and was lowballed over the phone, it should be noted prices were not listed online. We each ordered the lobster bisque and mushroom ravioli, he got the steak and I ordered the scallop(I say scallop singular because it was $80 for one piece). The bisque was watery and flavorless, not a single piece of lobster in our minuscule portion. I did not particularly care about the small serving size as the soup was not good enough to go for a second bite. The mushroom ravioli were the one saving grace of the meal but even they were under seasoned. We were underwhelmed by the entrees. The steak was well cooked but was a small unsalted portion covered in demiglaze, the fries were limp, lukewarm and unevenly salted however, it tasted far superior to my dish. My one shrimp wrapped scallop was under seasoned (I’m sensing a theme) and the sides did not serve the dish in a complimentary way- wilted spinach, a few measly cauliflower florets and a flavorless beet purée were overpowered by a briny, vinegar flavor. I finished my scallop only. Why they chose to wrap a scallop in shrimp, a similar tasting food is beyond me. It was not appetizing and seems like they did it just to say they could. Our shared desert trio came, for the second time, it was first brought to us by a food runner before we’d had our second of four courses which leads me to believe there is poor communication in the back of house. Mediocre chocolate truffles were paired with dry, kitschy heart shaped red velvet cake and panna cotta. I cringed when I got the bill but what could we do? Should have ordered takeout.
But, not Valentines day. It was quite a trap - $200 bill and we were starving an hour later. Nice ambiance, nice music, pretty good quality ingredients , no need to be over seasoned. Would go back on a regular night to sample more menu items.
Mar's is our favorite raw bar. We love to come by for their oyster happy hour during weekdays. Cocktails are fantastic too!
Mar’s service was impeccable, delicious food, so fresh, and great wine list. Was a lovely date night spot.
Great food! Very pricey, but overall a good experience. Perfect date night place
Had a nice evening there. Nicely designed restaurant. Cocktails and oysters at the bar and then dinner at a table. Steak tartare was enjoyable, but smaller than expected. Steak frites was very good. Service wasn’t the greatest.
Portions were insultingly tiny. The mushroom ravioli was under seasoned. Lobster ravioli came in a delicious saffron broth but we were not given a spoon to enjoy any of it. Overpriced for what you get.
The food was exceptionally good-absolutely worth going there for that-wine was pretty good, alas cocktails forgettable. The service was the unpleasant part..cold & unfriendly-treated us with studied indifference-not that I expect much..but in an unhurried/unpressured environment like this, why treat us like we have a communicable disease ? In the 28 years that I lived in Astoria this might have been the least welcoming of the places at which I have eaten & yes, we racked up a decent tab racked up (about $350 for two including tip)..for that I would expect better treatment.
Overall we really enjoyed our dinner at Mar's. The service was friendly and perfectly timed. The atmosphere was cozy with a quirky twist due to the art gallery and bar decor. Its a perfect place for a date or romantic dinner. The cocktails were very well made and the food tasted great. The portions were a bit small, but we didn't leave feeling hungry. I would definitely make the drive into Astoria (from Rutherford, NJ) to go back to Mar's.
Food was tight. Loved the ambiance and all that but service was slow and they weren’t even that packed. When the food came out we were all drooling tho and it was bangin compliments to the chefs!
