Situated in an old church on lower Westheimer in Houston, Mark Cox, chef and owner of his namesake restaurant, Mark's, has given Houstonians, who have anxiously awaited his debut for years, a thoroughly unique dining experience.
Offering Cox's own brand of American progressive cuisine, Mark's menu encompasses inspirations from many distant lands, indicative of America's true melting pot heritage. We offer 2 private and 1 semi-private areas. Our first private space is for 5 to 8 people in our Alcove Room. Traditionally we do our Chef's Tasting in this room. It is perfect for those small private business dinners or Celebrations. Our Second Private Room is the Cloister Room. It seats 32-40 people and is completely sound proofed when the doors are closed. This is the only area where we allow audio visual presentations. It is a great room for small wedding receptions, and larger business dinner. The Loft is our Semi-private space. It overlooks the Main Dining Room and has a great view.

So sad to this restaurant gem close. My wife and I celebrated her 60th birthday and 39th anniversary up in the alcove - it was a phenomenal evening. This restaurant has always been a solid 'go to' restaurant for special occasions! It was nice getting a chance to talk with Mark. We wish he and his wife the best.
Was very disappointed. Bought the 8 course tasting and it was not honored because the restaurant was closing. Manager said it would be honored and when we got there it was not. Very disappointed with the food we ordered and the very small portions for what we paid.
I Have always loved marks the food is outstanding the service is supurb and cocktails are so ever delicious. The resturant itself is very unusual as it is in an old church converted into this wonderful place to enjoy a special event or just to have an outstanding evening out to dinner and relaxation. We met friends for brunch on pSunday 21 May and had anticipated an exceptional meal. My appetizer of seafood cantolloini was excellent and my wife had the duck ravioli which she enjoyed very much. Everything went south after that. My wife ordered the sea bass which she.said was very good but it did not contain artichokes or olives which were listed on the menu. My lamb chop was about 3 and one -half inches long containing two small bites of meat. Filling eout the plate was one green bean, one small stalk of asparagus,and one very small carrot "coin". The lamb sausage was so tough that I could not cut it. I could not identify the third item on the plate which appeared to be some sort of custard,doughy mass. Overall, it is no surprise that Mark's is going out of business. $48 per person was extremely expensive for the very small amount of food served. The raspberry sorbet served with the very small serving of white chocolate bread pudding was miniscule and was a blip on the plate. Even the biscuits and two muffins were one bite wonders. Chef made several trips out to the dining room speaking only to the sameness two tables and ignoring all other diners.
Wanted to return one final time before they close, and we were not disappointed. The hostess, sommelier, and waiter were all very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, as was the wine. Mark Cox greeted us on the way out and thanked us for dining with them. We had a great night.
An absolute favorite of mine for ywars and so sorry to see it go. Our laat meal there was as perfect as the first. The chef's off menu selections were a delight as always, especially the most prefect soft shell crab. Waitstaff is the best anywhere. A true Houston landmark that will be missed!
First time at Mark's. Lovely food, I got the lobster special entree which was slightly over cooked but was still tasty. Partner had the lamb which he said was outstanding. Service was fantastic. We had an upstairs table and a nice view of the restaurant.
Only downside was the restaurant felt a little dated. The food was very well cooked and modern that the dated restaurant let it all down a little, still a great evening.
My wife and I hadn't been to Mark's in 6 years but always had fond recollections of it. On our return visit, the food did not disappoint. Very flavorful and well executed. The service however was among the worst that we've had at a fine dining restaurant. Our waiter did the bare minimum and seemed very disinterested in what he was doing. He would walk by our table multiple times without stopping to see if we were ready to order or to check in on how we liked our dishes. After dropping off our dessert menus he didn't return for 25 minutes to take our order. By that time we pretty much had had enough and finished our evening on a low note. Unfortunate experience.
The food was very good (my only very minor complaint was that the ahi tuna sashimi, while very tasty, had the tuna cut up so small it was hard to identify the individual pieces--non-sashimi-lovers probably would prefer this, but I love sushi/sashimi where I can experience the texture of the fish). Service could not have possibly been better.
I have eaten fine cuisine around the world. If the Michelin Star were awarded to American Restaurants, this place would certainly be on the radar to earn one. I was amazed by the level of service and the tantilizing dishes. While certainly not inexpensive, I would now consider this to be the best restaurant I have eaten at in Houston.
I took my then-girlfriend (now-fiance) out to dinner at Mark's on the night that I proposed to her. It was a perfect way to set a romantic tone for the evening. Moreover, the food was great and so was the service (my waiter's name was Chris). I strongly recommend Mark's to anyone looking to plan a romantic date or looking to have a classy night!
The food was really great and the service was off the charts awesome. The meal portions were not too small but the dessert portion could be a bit larger. We had the duck and the Monchong and they were both great. The pasta stuffed with smoked pheasant and duck was a hit as well. The evening was very relaxing and we enjoyed the meal and the service. The price was a bit higher than we are used to paying at places comparable but it was still a great experience.
Mark's used to be one of Houston's premier restaurants a few years ago. My wife and I decided to revisit it. As we walked in, we were struck that it was nearly empty on a Thursday night. The clientele was 70+ (we are talking walkers and oxygen tanks) and the restaurant was brightly lit (like Luby's), completely destroying the ambiance of the beautiful building. We waited a very long time for our food in spite of the fact that the restaurant was empty. By the time the food arrived, we were so frustrated (and filled-up with bread) that we quickly ate half of our meals and got the heck out. It's quite sad to see a fine restaurant hit rock bottom.
