Marketplace Ratings and Reviews
Place has gone down hill the restaurant wasn't even full considering there was a show at the Palace and it was the second time the service was awful combined with what looks like a higher priced menu. The food is decent but doesn't warrant higher prices with bad service. I hope they can fix it as I've always enjoyed this spot.
My food was great and the dessert was amazing, I had the chicken and the grits that came with were wonderful. The service was fantastic. Only two issues. The first, the restaurant wasn't at fault for. The table next to us had a very loud man who talked about himself for the entire two hours we were eating! Again, no fault of Marketplace but we were out for romantic dinner and this guy had to be one of the most unaware and obnoxious people I've ever encountered. There were other people at his table and I don't think we heard anyone else speak or maybe this guy just wouldn't let them. It put a damper on our evening. The other was just a matter of taste, my husband didn't like the mix of flavors with his steak and the demi-glace. The cut was great and you could tell it was a good quality piece of steak, just not a fan of the demi-glace. All in all, it was great. Staff was attentive and food was good.
We went for lunch around 1:30. Both got the BLGT sandwich. There wasn't much bacon on it and what was there was tough to bite off and chew. It was more like jerky than the crispy bacon we were expecting. Wait staff was pleasant. Based on other reviews we were expecting something better. Maybe dinner is a different deal.
I am not one to usually leave reviews but I saw a few negative reviews and I thought I might share my experience. Well being from out of town I googled a few places to eat and this looked very good. My girlfriend and I arrived right on time and were quickly seated. Let me say that the place exceeded my expectations. The service was perfect and the food was amazing. We had the filet and the salmon. Both were cooked perfect and the presentation was very good. We did not have one negative thing to say about our experience. While some people have said they think the food is over priced, they need to go back to Outback or Something of that nature. Basically you get what you pay for. We are hoping to go back soon!!!!
The food choices are horrible! We did not stay for very long and tried a few appetizers. The dinner choices was nothing appetizing! Witness another a woman leaving before she could even get her water because there's no options. This used to be one of my favorite places. What happen?! New chef?! Turns out we ended up seeing the woman down at new resturant Set. VERY DISAPPOINTED!! :(
My husband and I typically only dine at this restaurant when we go to a show downtown. And then I remember how amazing it is and vow to go more often! Truly a place that is underestimated in the downtown dining scene. I have never had a bad experience here. Lovely menu, beautifully plated food, great service!
Service Staff not trained professionally. Had better wait and bar staff at Applebee's. Some area right behind our table had extra chair and table stuffed in a corner. So like a storage closet in full view the while dinner, right behind my spouse. Awful awful restaurant front of house leadership!!
Someone told me the place was under new ownership. I don't know if that is accurate, but if so, it has gone the wrong direction. The menu is limited. There are no chicken breast options, which seemed odd to me. There are no basic side dishes, and no side dish menu either. (Not everyone wants horseradish in their mashed potatoes.) They removed their truffle fries from the menu, which was arguably the best item they had. They're trying to become "fancy" and Louisville has enough restaurants that do that well. Won't be back at this rate, which is terrible, because it was always my go to for Palace and Brown Theater events.
I feel like this restaurant is really overpriced. I have no issue with higher priced meals, however, I do have an issue with paying $6 to $7 for a domestic beer. The cheeseburger was $17 and it was lackluster in presentation. It was a $12 burger at most. Additionally, we ordered the goat cheese appetizer which came with a toasted baguette. It was so hard it cut my mouth. I could have asked the server for bread that wasn't so hard, but at those prices, I shouldn't have to. In short, the food isn't bad, but not worth the prices at all. I recommend going to one of the many amazing restaurants on Market that are worth that higher price point.
The food was fantastic but the service was SUPER slow. We were there for a lunch reservation. The place was pretty much empty and they sat us at the table closest to the door- very drafty in January. It took a full hour for our meals to arrive and we were late getting back to work. Great food if you have no time constraint. Would not recommend for lunch.
Wow! This place is a hidden gem on 4th street among all the corporate goop. Had a business client to meet with and this was the perfect spot. The service was fantastic along with the delicious burger -- didn't really care for the fries as they're steak fries and I just prefer shoestring style (and should have asked for another side but didn't think about it). They evidently have a fantastic happy hour -- which I didn't know about -- so I'll definitely be back for that since there are half-price appetizers during that time -- and as it get's warmer it will be an awesome place to enjoy that happy hour on their large patio. Great experience overall!!!
Upon being seated, and realizing that the music (not to our liking) was entirely too loud, we asked the server if she could turn down the racket. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, and wanted to have a romantic meal with conversation. The server assured us that she would turn the music down, but the clamor did not lessen.
As far as the food, I can say both "Yuk!" and "Yum!" The appetizer with "duck bacon", brussels sprouts, and homemade pork rinds was anything BUT appetizing! As if it wasn't bad enough when I tasted it, that awful flavor kept haunting me all night! Not only did it have an overwhelming garlicky, bitter, way too salty taste, but the pork rinds were like trying to eat plastic! I'm not exaggerating! My husband and I both paused mid bite, looked at each other, and said, "Plastic!"
Now for the "Yum" part. The salmon served over whipped potatoes was scrumptious! Some of the juiciest, tenderest salmon I've eaten. The sauce made the show! As bread pudding is one of my husband's favorites, that is what he ordered for dessert. The birthday candle was an unexpected extra touch! He really enjoyed his bourbon bread pudding, pronouncing it delicious! I had the chocolate cake. It was good, but nothing special.
In summary, I think that the Marketplace has great potential. They are in an excellent location, being nextdoor to the Palace. But the chef needs to remember not to sacrifice taste for creativity! When diners pay the prices we did, we expect excellent food as well as superb service. The Marketplace falls short of either.
