**We do not take reservations for the patio. We seat only complete parties on a first come first serve basis.
Good service, good menu options. We sat inside due to the windy weather and had a good chance to visit without too much background noise.
One of the negatives of MarketBar is the service. Although our waitress was friendly, the attentiveness wasn't always there (although I will say, she was a lot better than the one I had when I went to MarketBar for brunch a few months ago). Unlike many SF eateries now, Market Bar will still split the bill for diners which is a bit plus, but once we got out bills, our waitress never came back to the table! We had to take our payments up to the cashier! Be that as it may, the food is good; I had the octopus which is such a treat to see on a menu - I thought it a little over done as it didn't have a resistance to the bit and it was a little small for the price ($27). One of the diners had the steak tacos which looked delicious (done medium rare) but there was some hidden spiciness which caused her to have to ask for a glass of milk to cool her taste buds down! Desserts were not interesting or enticing (although strawberry which are in season were on the menu). The plus to MarketBar is that it is one of the few places that stays open all afternoon into evening so you can eat dinner at 4:30 if you have an appointment in the early evening.
I have gone to this restaurant many times over the years and have always enjoyed their delicious burger. Their other offerings are good, but the burger.... I met a friend there to enjoy one of these burgers only to find out that it had been replaced on the menu by some adulterated version. I asked our server to inquire as to whether I could get just a plain burger and not only was the answer no, but the chef was highly irritated at the question. Sadly to say, this last visit was, in fact, my last visit.
Excellent food and great customer experience/service!!
Awkward to leave the restaurant to use the toilet in the main market with shoppers, browsers and tourists. Fun place, good food, noisy for conversation.
Great food and a nice break while walking around San Francisco! The crab salad was delicious as were the drinks! Thanks!
The halibut dish was outstanding. The service was above average. Highly recommend the Market Bar.
This used to be my "go-to" brunch restaurant when I visited San Francisco, but no more. I am not sure if it changed ownership, but the menu was different and my meal was totally lackluster and insufficient for the price. I really love the location, but I will look to other venues during my next visit to the city.
Met a friend for lunch on a beautiful sunny day. Was able to score a table outside in umbrella shade.
We chatted for ages and our server was most patient with us. She had chowder and I the fab asparagus
soup and iced tea. Really enjoyed. Great people watching, excellent chow, and great service.
Check it out!
Our group of 4 had a wonderful Sunday lunch. We loved our starter—fried olives with anchovy, nice crunch and so flavorful!
Entrees also got rave reviews. The burger was perfect, according to our aficionado. The Niçoise salad was plated beautifully, topped with a generous, thick tuna filet. Fish tacos were yummy. My grilled octopus was also beautifully plated and full of delicious Mediterranean flavors. Service was outstanding! Our server was attentive and his suggestions were spot on!
The service was good, the food was average and it was very expensive for the quality of the food and overall experience.
For the past 10 years the service has been horrible, as it was this past Sunday when we were there! How is that even possible? The food is super overpriced for simple eggs, mushroom and asparagus omelet. No seasoning on the food either. The only reason to go here is to sit outside on a sunny day, just eat before you come.
Our reservations was for 6 pm. The server seated us and then did not check back in for almost 15 mins. The whole time we had to try to get his attention to take our drink order, then our appetizer order and then our dinner. It was painful experience and the food was not that great.
This was a lunchtime meal. The service was excellent, attentive but not too intrusive. All entrees served were well-prepared and tasty. The ambience and noise level allowed for ample conversation as part of a reunion with a friend from out of town.
Perfect lunch spot for outdoor dining on a sunny day with friends or business colleagues.
Food was mediocre, waitress took our order & brought the bill & did nothing else including giving our change since we paid cash. Will not visit again.
Delicious food and attentive service.
Very attentive. He was very helpful in choosing a very satisfying meal.
Given wrong info about the ferry next door by THREE different employees. Missed our boat, handicapped friend, would have walked back for a free drink!!
Food was good. Wine list had plenty to choose from. Lots of fish dishes. I liked my food as did my brother. Neither left anything on our plates. I'll go back. Not inexpensive, but fair.
A bit overpriced. Service was great and food came quick.
Excellent meal, wait staff, and ambience for Valentine's Day!
Great lunch on a rainy day. The burger was delicious!!!
Very attentive. Just write for quantity. This was restaurant week in San Francisco. I liked
Our server Blue was a delight. Personable, thoughtful, willing to indulge our requests for his personal input. Our food was great, (especially the butterscotch dessert on the pre fixe menu) and the vibe was great too. Have already recommended to our local friends. Thank you for our birthdays crowns!
Always terrific in every way. Superb seasonal food with great healthy options.
Very nice service for a group of eight for an early evening dinner. I should have ordered my salad dressing on the side as my crab and shrimp salad was kind of soggy at the end. Parker rolls are unbelievably delicious. On Wednesday evening bottles are of wine are half off. Saved us some serious cash. Will go back.
The food was not flavorful or appetizing in any way. Very basic. We felt that we paid too much for a meal that didn’t fulfill our appetite.
I am so happy to review this restaurant because no one should make a reservation at the Market Bar and consider it a firm commitment. I reserved a table for 4 at 6:45 on January 19. My Open Table confirmation noted that the table was ours from 6:45 until 8:45. Imagine the surprise among our table of 4 adults when the waiter announced that on Saturday nights, the kitchen closes at 7PM and we would need to put in our order before that time. As we are sitting there - having ordered a bottle of wine (which, though from a good region of Spain, tasted like it had been stored in a hot house for 3 years) and appetizers - the staff are putting chairs on tables and closing down shop. When I asked the host about our reservations and the Open Table notation that the table was ours until 8:45PM- her response was "I just seat people." We literally threw down some of the appetizers - left 1/2 bottle of wine - and walked to the end of the Ferry Plaza where we were able to land a table for 4 at the incredibly fabulous Slanted Door, where the food was out-of-this-world and the wait staff amazing. Look, if you want to close early that's fine with me - but tell me when I walk in the door - not after I have wasted $100 on poor service, lies, and crummy wine. I'll never go back. Consider yourself warned.
Biggest advantage was ability to make a reservation ahead for 7 people. Great location to meetup from all different directions. Very accommodating. Even nice in the rain.
Food was above average, service was fabulous. We opted to change tables after we saw the setup, and they didn't even blink. While new tables were being set up, waitress went to the bar to fetch me an Irish Whisky (it was raining sideways, I think, and I needed something warm). Great Irish Whisky, btw.
Excellent service and food (taste and presentation)! Made me wonder why I hadn’t been thinking of his place for a special meal all these years.
NYE is hard to cater for but knowing in advance we only had a 2 hour window would have been preferred than being told we needed to leave. We asked for coffee and we were going to order additional drinks and were not given the opportunity.
The whole meal felt rushed.
I will come back to try another night as I have previously enjoyed brunches here.
Went there for brunch with 8 of us, therefore it was not too surprising that the last dish came out almost 10 minutes after the first ones;
But the biggest deduction is their inability to accommodate a diner's request; not a huge request I would think, but for one of the egg dishes ('black beans with poached eggs') I requested the eggs 'poached hard', the waiter said the chef wouldn't do it; I then asked for a fried egg, the waiter said the chef wouldn't do it, so I gave up and just ordered the granola (great by the way, but I go to restaurants to order something unique and different; granola I have at home every day!) It's quite amazing that the kitchen can't accommodate requests for an egg to be cooked to the customer's order!
Been by Market Bar many times and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprise how good everything was. Nice location in the Ferry building and prices were good for San Francisco and especially for being in the Ferry building.
Great lunch meal in very classically San Francisco restaurant. Good service and amazing food with lots of fun food and drink specials. Great location in a building for artisan food and other items. Loved the crab deviled eggs and the porterhouse rolls as our appetizer. I enjoyed the chicken pot pie.
Our waiter, Jarod, was super friendly. Food was great and they were very accommodating.
The servers were on point and very courteous. The food was quite subpar; ordered the lobster/shrimp risotto and received the mushroom risotto (which wasn't even on the menu). It was quickly changed but the risotto had NO flavor, not even salt, a bit underdone and the shrimp and lobster were just on top, some pieces cold and NOTE: CRUNCHY BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND CELERY NOT APPEALING ON A RISOTTO. The quality was NOT that of a plate for $30. It was my holiday lunch with an executive and I was not very pleased. The eggnog creme brulee with gingerbread was very tasty.
We three shared shishito peppers, arancini, half chicken and seafood pot pie. I make better arancini, the half chicken was quite a baby, and the seafood pot pie was huge. Waiter was great with advice; Cava Rose was perfect. All in all, very satisfying.
MarketBar serves reliably good, generous portions of tasty food. While not exceptional cuisine, the overall dining experience is always comfortable and comforting -- how can you lose?
Service was very poor. We were seated fairly quickly and water was provided fast as well. Took several minutes to have a server come by only for her to tell us she would be right back. She returned several minutes later to get our order and then we barely saw her again. Food came quickly which was great but my eggs on my Benedict were very over cooked. She never came by to ask if anything was ok. Food was good and fast but like I mentioned my eggs were quite overcooked.
