Mario's Restaurant - Arthur Ave. Ratings and Reviews
I was a little disappointed with Mario’s. The best part of my meal was the calamari we had as an appetizer. I ordered the vongole pasta (pasta with clams), and honestly it was not that great. I don’t know if there was too much pepper added to the white sauce, but it did not taste like a simple, traditional clam sauce. Also, when we got the bill, the price on the menu was priced lower than what was on the bill which was weird. My boyfriend, who is from Milan, ordered Aragosta pasta (lobster with red sauce) and there was barely any lobster! It tasted like spaghetti with tomato sauce, which also wasn’t that great. HOWEVER, the service was very friendly and attentive.
Service spotty, waiter took 3 appetizer orders from our party of 6, then completely forgot 1 of the 3, disavowing that we'd stated the order to him. While under-servers were energetic and responsive, our waiter can only be described as lethargic. He delivered the forgotten artichoke with our entrees instructing us to 'pick on it.' I order the mussels marinara - the last several were gritty and strung through with the tough byssal threads.
Love Arthur Avenue but Mario's didn't live up to the hype for me. They ran out of the special by 6pm, which is definitely poor planning. My brother in law asked if they could make a carbonara, which they said would be no problem. When it came it was essentially scrambled eggs with pancetta over pasta. It was awful. The waiter could have cared less. The highlights were the wine was good, bread was nice crunchy Italian bread, red sauce was delicious and the cannoli was very good-fresh cream and crunchy shell. This was a one and done for me.
After a visit to the New York Botanical Garden train show, a late lunch at Mario's was perfect. The service was attentive and friendly, the menu had all you could want and the food was delicious -- authentic, fresh and so tasty. They treated us like family and made for a perfect ending to a wonderful day.
