Marie Louise Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This bistro has very nice food and a wait staff that is attentive and pleasant. The food is authentic and apart from a bit of the wait from our oysters, the evening went smoothly. What could improve the place a bit is that the space is a bit cold and gives you no memories of a cozy French bistro, more of a Baltimore vibe that needs warmer lighting.
This is a very approachable restaurant with some interesting dishes from the Mediterranean region. The lamb two ways (appetizer) was probably the best dish of the night: tasty and well-prepared; the salmon carpaccio was delicious, but there were too many sun-dried cherries and that made the dish overly sweet. The bouillabaisse had muted flavors of fennel and saffron; the broth was more of a clam-based marinara sauce, good, but not what we expected. The bass with herb risotto was tasty, but a tad overcooked. As dessert, we had a pineapple tart that was really good.
What's going on in the restaurant industry. The last several restaurants I've been to have all had problems. Unfortunately Marie Louise was no exception. Why are restaurants running out of wines on their wine lists? It shouldn't be that hard to keep a current list. I don't want to order a second bottle only to be told that the "first" was the "last." This happened last night. But that's not a big deal. What is a big deal is a dish that's supposed to be hot being served at room temperature and after being sent back to be heated is served again at room temperature. That's simply not acceptable and ends up ruining everyone's meal. The restaurant was not busy and seemed understaffed. I never saw a hostess or manager whom I could speak to. Other than the wine and the temperature of one dish the food was very good. The service was okay but not great. So I was disappointed but will go back trusting that this was a one time problem. But please restaurants, keep your wine lists properly updated!
Everything about our meal here was perfect. The waiter was amazing, we never had to ask for anything. Each of his recommendations for food and wine was spot on.
The food was amazing and was served very promptly. We didn't have time for coffee and desert, but did take some pastries to go (I wish we had gotten more!).
Our favorites from the night - muscles in white wine sauce, grilled salmon, pear almond tarte and flourless chocolate cake.
Great spot for a quick dinner before seeing a show at Center Stage, we will be stoping here again the next time we are in Baltimore.
Service was slow at first, probably due to the large party wrapping up dinner. However, once they were through, we received very good service - our server was very friendly and welcoming. The French Onion Soup was delicious, and we loved all of the pastries available for dessert!
I'm quite the foodie and eat my way through baltimore, rarely do I experience the level of incompetence this place displayed. Although their menu has GF next to a few gluten free options, there are items (such as a salad with goat cheese and nuts) that are also gluten free but not labeled, it's possible the chef doesn't know what gluten is. Their menu is quite hard to navigate as a person with allergies. I really wanted to try their escargot, but it seems they add cayenne pepper to it, which is a huge sin if you are familiar with french cooking. Their chef came out and spoke with me about allergies before my date arrived, I told him specifically what I needed, and he sent a plate out like nothing we discussed. Is it that hard to make a burger without the bun and a salad without tomatoes on the side? I had to wait 20 minutes for him to re-do it but again it wasn't correct, and I was required to pay full price. I asked for my salad in the meantime, and what I got was uncut romaine leaves and two cucumber slices. The knives weren't sharp enough for me to cut them so I had to pick them up whole to eat them. I was on a first date and I think he was quite bothered by the whole thing because he hasn't returned my call. No one wants to have a hassle on a first date or any date. I will not be going back.
Three of us had lunch before the theater. Told the waiter and service was very good and we were out in ample time. I had the grilled salmon and eggs. My eggs were done just as I requested. The jam was really delicious. One friend had the oyster po' boy and said she had has better. We had the tiramisu- our server divided it in three for us.
Service was very good and management checked in to see how things were which was not too good. Three traditional French dishes - coq au vin, beef burguinonione and escargots were very disappointing. The oysters which were supposed to be bluepoint were flavorless. To their credit they replaced the coq au vin with trout almondine which was much better but not great. They're are few French restaurants around these days and it was disappointing to be disappointed.
We went for Restaurant Week. We each ordered an appetizer and a main course, and all were delicious. We have been to Marie Louise at least six times, and it never disappoints. The waiter was personable and attentive. At a time when many restaurants think that they have to offer "creative" combinations of foods just to be different, Marie Louise concentrates on preparing classic dishes, sometimes with a little twist. For the quality of the food (excellent), the prices are very reasonable.
Several friends came to dine at Marie Louise after a movie at the Charles. It was restaurant week, so a few of us ordered off the pre fixe menu, and others off the regular menu. The filet option came recommended - and wow - it was perfect! Everyone enjoyed their meal. The service was well-paced in that French way - We were there to enjoy good food and good company in a leisurely way, and that is how we were allowed to enjoy ourselves.
Food Was very good. The temperature was freezing. I could have ask the waitress to turn the air to a more temperate degree. She was extremely busy though. I think she was the only server there.I told her I was too cold and I left the table and waited outside for my husband. She did not offer to turn the temperature to a warmer degree.
we went before going to theater & had fabulous meal - my husband got one of the specials (pan seared snapper) & I got coq au vin - our wines were both fabulous - they have wide selection & reasonably priced by the glass - the sauces for both of our dishes were exceptional - we had to splurge on one of the gorgeous French pastries, too - everything was just scrumptious - very pleased we stumbled on the restaurant
We've been to Marie Louise several times and the food is (almost) always good and reasonably priced. Nothing fancy, but it is a Bistro after all. Disappointed that they didn't have all the wines on their wine list (this seems to be a trend with restaurants- - not keeping wine lists current or their wine cellars stocked) but they had lots of options. Half priced wine night was a bonus. For a casual meal (pre-Baltimore Center Stage theater for us), it hits the spot. Will be back.
The food we ate was well-prepared, reasonably displayed, and carefully served. We chose to eat appetizers rather than entrees and were pleased with our selections. The Salmon Carpaccio was solid and flavorful. My dessert was an eclair. The cream was good, if uninspired. The pastry portion was adequate. The coffee was very good. The other diners were pleased with their salads, the greens were fresh and unencumbered by dressing, leaving the diner to appreciate the ingredients. It was a good experience.
Our party of 6 enjoyed a wonderful meal this weekend before attending the Center Stage performance of "Jazz". It was not crowded at 6PM on a Saturday, we were seated immediately, and service was attentive. Our appetizers included the calamari Sicilian style, lamb two ways, salmon carpaccio, and mac and cheese. Entrees included the bouillabaisse, filet mignon special, hanger steak, and duck confit. Room was saved for the lemon meringue pie, tiramisu, and apple tart items from the dessert tray, and there were no leftovers. The restaurant offers a 15% discount for patrons with tickets to a Center Stage performance, and we will be back!
