Always a good meal at Mari Vanna. Decor is like elegant country farmhouse, delicious authentic Russian dishes, wonderful infused vodkas, and a strolling accordion player for atmosphere. Entree prices are roughly $18-$30, apps $10-$15. Make sure to try the pilmeni!

We went to Mari Vanna for Valentine's Day, and our experience could not have been better. We ordered the duck and the salmon for our entrees and both were delicious, and at a pretty good price for such an authentic restaurant. I also would recommend the beers (especially Baltica #4) and the desserts (we ordered Bird's Milk and the traditional honey cake).

Even though I reserved many weeks ahead, we were given the worst table way on the fourth floor. I asked for a change, to no avail. So many better choices for Valentine’s Day, we will never come back.

Will definitely be coming back soon. DC could use more Eastern European places, especially ones with this level of atmosphere and quality.

I’ve been to Mari Vanna in Moscow and in London and both restaurants are great. I booked a table in DC when I had some friends come to town this weekend and was excited for them to try it. The hostess guided us to the third floor where it was pitch back except for strobe lights and there were three private parties of 10+ people. It would have been like eating in some sad night club. I asked if we could instead have one of the six other open tables available in the restaurant on the first and second floors but the Manager insisted that each of those tables had individually been booked out (even though the hostess seemed to think that a few were available so she went to “check”. When I complained to the Manager that the table they offered us was unacceptable, she said it was because I didn’t specifically request that the table was on the first or second floor when I made the booking (though of course when I made the booking no one asked which floor I would like to be on?). Never going back. Terrible experience.

The food was excellent! However, the value was not. When I left the restaurant, I was still hungry. Tiny portions and a big price tag is not acceptable for a place like this.

Intimate setting with tables very close together. Inviting and cozy, but not private if that's what you want. Service was excellent as was the food. We recommend trying their authentic dishes rather than picking one their newer additions since that is the reason to go is to try traditional Russian dishes.

The restaurant is only 1/4 block from the Mayflower Hotel and, therefore, very convenient to hotel guests. Food was very authentic and wine list provided regional Russian and adjacent eastern European options. Service was excellent, attentive and provided good insight into what was available. My wife and I would recommend this wholeheartedly for eastern European cuisine.

I love the charming decor. I've come here a number of times for lunch and tea as I work in the area and always enjoy the experience. The last time I ordered Cod from the lunch special and I wasn't that impressed but apart from that, all the food that I've tried, I've liked (caviar, eggplant rolls, beet salad). Their afternoon tea (3-5 pm) with the dessert platter is super awesome and I highly recommend!

We had the $25 fixed price lunch menu. I had the vineagrette salad with beets, etc. and the chicken stroganoff. Dark Russian bread as well. Delicious, fresh, authentic. We sat at a table in the window nooks by the door, but I was impressed that I never felt a draft. Overall, the ambience is cozy but elegant, with interesting decor details throughout. Noise level was comfortable. I never felt like I had to shout or ask my colleague to repeat something.

We choose to celebrate my 60th birthday at Mari Vann because I have been to Mari Vann before in New York and London, which were both excellent. So when I saw there was a location in Washington DC, I wanted to go there to celebrate my 60th birthday. However, I was very disappointed and embarrassed at a Russian because the quality of food was awful. The vodka was warm and they did not have wild Russian mushrooms, a basic stable for true Russian cuisine. The ambiance and service was okay, but I was embarrassed because this was not Russian cuisine I wanted to show off to my American husband, ruining my birthday. I will never go there again.

Mari Vanna has one of the most elegant interiors of any restaurant we've tried. This was even more true with holiday decorations in place. This made up a bit for some of the issues we had.
FOOD: Good
We had a selection of appetizers and entrees- all were good. My entree (Chicken Kiev) was especially good.
PRICE: High
Prices are high (Chicken Kiev is $24 and Borsch is $12, for example) but not out of sight. My infused vodka was $8, and glasses of wine $9. I think this is not out of line with other good DC restaurants.
SERVICE: Bad to Terrible
We were a party of 4. We ordered several appetizers, which were brought and eaten- very good. I also ordered a bowl of borsch soup. The entrees for two of our party were brought at the same time as my soup, so they finished their meal while I ate soup and our 4th member watched. When I finished the soup, my entree and that of our other member were delivered. The first two people then watched as we ate the remainder of our meal. The waiter made no apology or even comment. Wait staff was pleasant but it was hard to get their attention, and they had to be reminded multiple times to fulfill requests like sweetener, straws, extra napkins, etc.
BOTTOM LINE:
The restaurant interior is wonderful, and food is both good and unusual- there aren't many good Russian restaurants here. However, the hassle and expense of driving downtown, fighting the traffic, putting up with mediocre service and paying for both parking and an expensive meal make it hardly worth the effort. I really wanted to like it, but I doubt if we go back.

For people who may be hesitant to try Ukranian/Russian food, give it a try. Well priced options and you can go traditional or more modern entrees. Everything tasted great.

We've dined in several restaurants in several countries for many occasions. This was one of the greatest culinary experiences we've had. From the decor, the staff, food, ambiance... and the little extra touches, this is a place we will come back to over and over.

Several years ago, my family stumbled into Mari Vanna on Christmas Eve-- we were confused by a Russian restaurant, and the place was hosting a caviar and vodka special (and we were a family, not partaking in either). We ended up on the third floor, with the 1970's Russian cartoons and the Russian-version-of-ABBA music, and chintz couches, and accordian serenades-- and we were entranced! We returned ON PURPOSE to the main dining room for my daughter's birthday, and the AMAZING entrees included a mushroom baklava and lamb shanks, and roast duckling-- every bite was wonderful. Desserts, wonderful. Horseradish vodka, medicinal and wonderful. Thank you for making our visit ON CHRISTMAS EVE so wonderful.

Amazing spot! A cozy Russian restaurant with creative dishes. Definitely try their Plemini! If you know Russian, there is no problem. However, some servers need to bump up their English :)
Go and try it, you will be delighted.

Wonderful lunch at Mari Vanna. The roasted beets with prunes and caramelized goat cheese salad is absolutely delicious -- an imaginative take and what's become a menu staple. The eggplant rolls are also to die for. A great spot to go with vegetarians -- no one will feel like they're settling.

Amazing place. Never have Russian food experience before but it was remarkable by being coworkers for bday dinner. One slight hiccup was the first server said we could order happy hour menu when we were seated upstairs, then other servers came back and forth that we couldn’t. We couldn’t care less since it was a special occasion so it was a bit embarrassing and we just wanna eat.
