Margaret Kuo's - Media Ratings and Reviews
Margaret Kuo's remains a standout in the Philadelphia suburbs for top Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The cute restaurant in Media is cozy with a modern yet warm Asian decor. The food is outstanding. The hot and sour soup remains one of the best I've had anywhere (including China) and the sushi bar turns out the classics plus more modern rolls and other sushi offerings. Service is attentive and efficient.
Even though we had a reservation and have been to this restaurant many times before with plenty of tables available, we were rudely seated in the corner of the front of the restaurant, which was colder than the rest of the restaurant. My wife’s fish (done in a stone bowl table side) took 50 minutes to arrive and had very little fish in it. When we brought this to the staff’s attention, we were told that they would make it with more fish next time. Very disappointing and not the usual quality we’ve previously experienced here.
Dinner was disappointing. The wonton soup was very bland. The sushi was mushy. The garlic shrimp tasted more salty than with garlic. I have eaten here before and found the food to be very unappealing compared with our last dining experience. The service was adequate, but was not memorable in any way.
Food was great. Restaurant is very nice. Noise level good. Very nice place to dine. One problem. We were five people and the waiter never brought one dinner item we ordered. We ordered items to be shared and he never brought the spare ribs. Ms Kuo was there that night and she is a very, very nice host.
The restaurant was booked and not taking walk ins but there was only one person working the reception area managing all calls, take orders on the phone, take out order pick ups and those coming in with reservations. She spent almost 15 minutes taking calls and managing take out orders before making eye contact with us and we had a reservation. There was also only one sushi chef and we were told it could be an hour wait for sushi. The food was delicious and we did wait for sushi. The wait staff was very apologetic. If the restaurant was booked to capacity for the night, they should have prepared and staffed accordingly.
Food was okay. We went at 6:30 and sushi bar was slammed. We waited 40 minutes for ours with no explanation but when I cancelled it it quickly came out. I accepted when they dropped the charges from our check. Still, waiter should have been in communication with us
The ambiance was tranquil. Our server was well prepared for all the questions concerning the menu. The appetizers were amazing: Duck soup with special herbs and the steamed shrimp dumplings. Our main dishes were likewise outstanding: emerald shrimp and scallops and a Shanghai pork shoulder with bok choy. Overall, the experience was first class.
The restaurant was crowded, probably due to the anniversary special. Service was slow and intermittent. Two people got appetizers about 20 minutes before the other two received theirs. My lightly crisped noodles were so stuck together I had to bring them home so I could cut them with a knife. On the whole take-out is better.
Our biggest issue was the long wait for our entrees, almost 1 hour. This was because it was a big take out night (Wed. before Thanksgiving), but no one said anything to us to explain until we stopped our waiter to inquire. Not sure why take out customers trump seated customers. Frustrating.
Appetizers were a little pricey for the portion size.
Food flavorful and generally good.
