Marathon - 16th & Sansom Ratings and Reviews
Ate with my younger brother who was visiting me this weekend. Marathon is one of my go to places. The apps sampler was perfect and the wontons were delicious. The brisket was good but could have had more flavors. The chicken tacos were really good and the breaking was perfect. Great meal overall
We were in town for parent's weekend at my daughters college, so I made reservations for my husband and I and our two daughters for dinner. 6pm on a Saturday night. We were 20 minutes late, and thankfully they held our table for us. The food was excellent - very creative appetizers, and the specials were outrageous. The Spicy chicken tacos, & philly cheesesteak won-tons were favorites. Jordan was our waitress and she was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely return.
My wife and I eat there most Friday evenings, so there's not much new I can describe. The food and service remain very good and consistently so! We believe that is due, at least in part to Scott, the manager at this location.
When they're very busy, he doesn't hesitate to clear the tables. I believe that the servers and those busing the tables are nicely groomed, polite and engaging because of a good training program as well as the good example Scott makes.
The food was great. The service was terrible. It stated with a wrong drink order, then received an order of fries instead of a the marathon burger with fries as one of the three dinners. (The kitchen was quick to get it out/corrected). Ordered a second round of drinks that didn't even come out until after our food was gone. the waitress delivered the bill with our 3 courses, our drinks AND the side of fries that we hadn't even ordered.
Marathon is a decent, solid place for food. They have lots of options so if you are dining with a family or pick eaters this is a place you can go that is not a chain outside of Philadelphia. They do have a full bar and the serve staff is very attentive and polite.
The whole experience would have been better if all the meals came out together. There was 4 of us. 2 of us got our food (one hot), and then .... nothing. Finally one more person got there food - (not hot). And after we asked, finally the fourth person got there's which was hot. The food was good, not great.
We arrived early for our reservation and they were able to seat us right away, which was great. Our server, Jordan, was one of the worst we had in Philly. She "must not have written down our appetizer order" and instead of taking responsibility or asking how she can accommodate us, she proceeded to laugh with her manager about it in the corner. Our dinner was great but service was so so terrible.
Food at Marathon is fine. I had pea soup and a salad and it was all tasty and healthy. The problem at Marathon is that it takes too long to get the food and the room is so noisy you cannot hear the person across the table. We arrived at 6:15 with a reservation and were seated right away. We ordered quickly because we had an 8:00 show to attend at Perelman. At 7:00, I had to ask our waiter when our food would be out. So we sat there, screaming at each other to be heard, for over a half hour, waiting for soup and salad. Again, I like the menu and think it should be a great, easy, reasonably-priced place to go before theater/concert. But, geez, the wait it crazy and the noise is deafening.
Saturday evening was a disappointment. Our dinner was ok. We ordered coffee and asked for a dessert menu. We received 3 cold cups of coffee and the check. We paid and left without drinking our coffee or ordering dessert. We will go back, it is one of our neighborhood favorites, but introducing our visitor to Marathon did not go over so well.
I've recommended the Marathon Grill on 16th and Sansom to nearly everyone I know. I have brought my friends and parents there on multiple occasions. The service is always impeccable, and the prices can't be beat, especially for the dining quality! Great cocktails, too.
We had reservations for dinner following a show. We were seated right away and our waitress was friendly and helpful when we had questions about the menu. The tomato soup was delicious as was the pork loin special. My daughter did not enjoy her chicken salad sandwich. Chicken quesadillas and the blackened chicken sandwich also got a thumbs up. Overall a reasonably priced place for a causal dinner.
