About Mara's Homemade
Mara’s Homemade is family owned and operated serving authentic Barbecue, Southern and Cajun cuisine. Barbecue is smoked on premise. Gulf seafood, Andouille sausage and spices are flown in from New Orleans to make traditional, authentic dishes. When not utilizing Southern products, Mara's buys local.
Live crawfish are available when in season and weather permits.
Family recipes are the staple plus new creations developed by Chef Josh.
Signature dishes include Char-grilled Oysters, Crawfish Stuffed Bread, Live Crawfish Boil and BBQ Black Peppered Shrimp.
Mara's now house grinds fresh brisket for their burgers. The hamburgers are served on pretzel buns baked daily on the premises. Turkey burgers are also available.
Homemade desserts are available daily and whole cakes and pies may be ordered to go with at least 24 hours’ notice. Mara's Homemade features a Bar with over 150 Spirits and 75 Wines

Haven't been to Maras in a while so we decided to give it another try. We did not remember why we stopped coming here. The dinner we had Sat nite reminded us why. We waited a very long time for our food to be served. The fried green tomatoes were very good but our shrimp Po Boy and brisket sandwich were very skimpy and the shrimp was not crispy and very small and fishy tasting. We don't know what happened to the food but it was not like we remembered. We did have dessert the pecan pie which is served cold and no whipped cream or ice cream. Our waiter was very good but no apologies about the wait. We were thanked numerous times for our patience which got annoying because they could have bought us a beer or dessert
This was the first time that we are here. We very much enjoyed a now closed location in the East Village some time ago. We were looking forward to this spot, but were not wowed, as we had hoped. Sampler appetizer was $20. I though that a little high for 2 shrimp, 2 wings, 2 deviled eggs and 2 fried green tomatoes (that were ripe, very thin and very red not green). Duck special very tasty and served appropriately rare. Catfish New Orleans (Catfish filet topped with crawfish etouffee) was just ok brought tepid, not warm with uninspired, bland presentation. Our waiter was very nice and accomodating.
We might return to try lunch if we are in the neighborhood, but we are not apt to go out of our way.
Always excellent food prepared like the name says "homemade"! Every dish is fresh and prepared to perfection. Thanks for putting your grilled clams back on the menu. Stuffed crawfish bread is something you cannot miss! There are actually a lot of things that you can't miss. Can't wait to go back.
We were in the mood for oysters, ribs and fried chicken. Fortunately we do not live far from Mara's and had the most delicious meal. They oysters are always fresh. We could not decide which ribs to have so we had a few of each and the fried chicken is always a winner. We can't wait to go back.
Mara's is a fun restaurant. Once seated, you feel like you are in the deep south. The menu is extensive and it's hard to narrow it down what to order. They have a huge beer and whiskey selection and flights of different libations are also offered. Two BBQ sauces are served with the food: Texas (sweeter) and Arkansas (spicier.) The cole slaw side is wonderful as is the red beans and rice. We loved the jalapeno cornbread also. If you have room, the desserts are excellent. It is a very unique spot and so happy to have found it.
Horrendous food. We were a party of 4 seated at a tiny table. The tables are ridiculously close to each other. Don't be fooled by the menu language. The jumbo chicken wings are actually party wings smothered in hot sauce. The food was inedible due to the overwhelming amount of salt in the rub. The smoked chicken was the driest I've ever tasted and the ribs were equally as bad. The prices are outrageous. $17 for a glass of wine is thievery for a place like this. As one of my table mates said, "the next time I want to eat dinner in a phone booth I'll come here." We will not be returning to give this restaurant another try.
First time visit for two senior couples on a quiet early Wednesday night. Restaurant adapted our order to meet a lactose free diet and tried to keep the sodium content as low as possible. We all enjoyed the decor.Staff was helpful and when we told them we were going to a movie shortly, they moved on getting us out of the restaurant quickly.
I have driven by Mara's Homemade restaurant a few times and never noticed it. I will never forget where it is now! The store front in unremarkable and I figured looking at the other stores, they all have similar fronts. You would never think there was a gem of a restaurant hidden behind this facade. Not everyone likes New Orleans , Cajun, NOLA or whatever you like to call it type food. If you dont, you are still missing the boat. The 6 of us sat down at a front table and it was nice and cool but not cold. We were greeted by 2 lovely ladies, Mara herself (did not know this until after appetizers ) and Salyolandra. They were so welcoming. There were not many people there given it was Sunday on 4th of July weekend. The streets were all empty. We ordered some meals. The catfish were nicely prepared, but before I forget, I had tacked on a few more dishes for is to try. The crawfish stuffed bread is amazing. We devoured it quickly to a point we ordered another one. Mara cut it into 6 pieces for all of us. We also ordered the alligator bites, I was not thrilled with it, and we ordered the alligator sausage. The sausage was delicious! The meals come with 2 sides in which you choose. I got corn and fried okra. The corn had a Cajun bite to it, and I liked it. I ordered another corn to go since my dining mates ate the other half of it. Now another big plus with this place is Josh, the bartender. Son of Mara, yes this place is family owned, he has a unique variety of drinks Almost forgot about the Brussels sprouts with bacon!!!! Finally we ordered dessert. The strawberryjalapeño ice cream was really tasty and good. No not spicy, but delish. Also had the pecan pie, done nicely and peach bourbon ice cream. All the dessert were good!, It's a must to go to eat there. The menu is extensive and you could keep coming for weeks and they change their menu to accommodate tastes. I highly recommend eating at Mara's!
Third visit here and our last. Surly staff. Never made to feel welcome. Always given worst table even though empty. Redfish was inedible. Owner told me to smother with line and guacamole. I did and thankfully then couldn't taste the fish. Storyville in Huntington is much much better for Cajun food !
The big problem with Mara's is not the food quality, the diversity of choice on the menu, the huge drinks menu or the friendliness of the staff. Those are all 4-5 stars in my book. My problem is simply that this is most definitely not a $$ restaurant, and more bluntly, for BBQ (even very good BBQ), this place is way overpriced. We went with family and the total came out to an average of $45 per person before tip and without any alcohol. We shared a couple of appetizers and three deserts between the 5 of us. My dad's baked potato topped with some pulled pork (that's it...nothing else) was over $20. And that was the cheapest dish we got. Seriously? For BBQ? That even tops NYC prices.
We love Mara's after having discovered it a few years ago. It is the best Cajun and BBQ food I have had in a long time. Every dish is authentic and the portions are great. You never come away feeling like you have not gotten your money's worth or that your appetite was not satisfied. The Hurricanes are terrific and help set the mood for real down home Louisiana cooking. The place is small so you really should make a reservation (which are always honored at or very near your chosen time). Mara's is worth a visit any time!!!
Went for dinner before seeing a show at Tilles Center. It's a funky little place with a unique menu for LI. Food was good, but service was excellent. Our server was bright, cheery and knowledgeable about the menu. The only knock was that we were seated right in front of the door and every time someone entered got blasted with cold air.
We love Mara's and go fairly often. Mara is a gem; she is extremely welcoming, never forgets to personally greet each table and her wait staff is professional and warm. The kitchen really delivers. Try the pulled pork with side of spicy corn and no vinegar cole slaw. Authentic, delicious Cajun. Highly recommended.
Mara's is one of my favorite places to eat. Warm , knowledge friendly waitstaff. Great cocktails! The grilled Oysters are not to be missed. Everything is fresh and delicious. Always save room for dessert, you'll be glad you did.
When deciding where to go for an early New Years Eve dinner Mara's came to mind. The table shared an order of Hush Puppies and Crawfish bread, both were delicious. The hush puppies have a kick. Two of us ordered the NY strip steak which came as ordered medium rare. We were quite happy with our choice. The sea scallop dinner was good as was the crab cake dinner. Eggnog creme butler was wonderful as was the King Cake ice cream.
The food is consistently good at Mara's. We were there just before Christmas, so service was not up to standards due to the crowded of dining room, but the owner was most generous to us in response to our complaint. The food is very unique for this part of Long Island; great barbecue and home-style cooking
