In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil.
Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!
Food and service excellent. Easy to park. All waiters were very friendly and helpful.
Everything we excellent as always. Food was outstanding and presentation was excellent. Noise level was low for a crowded restaurant. Service was great also.
Had a great first experience, food was fantastic as was service provided by Adrian
Food had 0 flavor, when i told the waiter my food was very chewy and had no flavor/seasoning his answer "thats how it is deal with it, all we do is cut the chicken and throw it in the rice we don't put any seasoning"... very interesting
The food here is always consistent and very good. Sangria is amazing as well as their fish and steaks.
Went for my husband's 50th birthday. Had never been there before, but enjoy Portuguese restaurants so gave it a try. It was steak special night. I ordered the ribeye with gargonzola cream sauce, onion rings and broccoli. Steak was over cooked; not even positive it was a ribeye, they ran out of gargonzola sauce and there were no onion rings. Friends did not enjoy their meal either. At least the birthday boy did. But how do you not have what is on special? Very disappointing.
We found the food mostly lackluster and under-seasoned. An exception was the skirt steak, which was well-seasoned but tough.
We ate dinner fairly early, starting 6:00pm, and the tables to either side of us were empty. Despite this, the noise level made conversation among the four of us a bit difficult.
Food and service were as good as we expected. I really enjoyed the special fish of the day. Cooked just right over a bed of shrimp risotto. Service was spot on and our server was a Salma Hayek lookalike so that was a plus : )
Once things settled down, we had a great experience. Upon arrival, the hostess seemed troubled by our 5PM reservation and didn't give us a proper greeting. The main dining room had 3 parties seated. She showed us to a table for two in the midst of the other parties. I asked if we could take the table for 2 in the corner by the window. She said NO. That would mean I have to reconfigure the entire dining room. (We had show tickets and planned on spending no more than 90 minutes.) She said it was reserved. I asked why there was such a problem exchanging a table for 2 for a different table for 2. She huffed, walked away and left us standing in the midst of the dining room. The waiters didn't know what to do. We were uncomfortable, too. She eventually came back and showed us to the table for 2 in the corner. If the restaurant didn't have such positive reviews, we would have left. But our waiter was right there with menus, good ordering advice and sangria. Everything was wonderful no thanks to the hostess.
Food was excellent
Wait staff super attentive
Also there is a outside patio out back that will allow cigars
Not overly expensive and food was delicious all 4 of us were extremely happy
fabulous food in my top 3 places to go to eat locally you should make a reservation even on weeknights
Great service, excellent food. Highly recommended!
Celebrated my boyfriend graduating the police academy and everything was phenomenal like usual. Thank you!
It was a very enjoyable meal. We eat out quite a lot, and there are a lot of disappointing places. This was not one of them.
Friendly and welcoming Service. Excellent menu and delicious food.
Delicious food & outstanding service!
The wait staff are very personable and friendly, assisting with menu recommendations.

Food was excellent and service was wonderful.
Ironbound Food in the heart of Monmouth County! Excellent, a must try.
Normally have a great meal there. Just one bad experience won’t keep me away
Too many times you find a restaurant that is just great in all respects on the first visit, and then fails miserably when you go back a few weeks later. Not so Mar Belo. Dinner with friends three weeks ago was terrific. Dinner with my wife 2 days ago just as good if not better. Best clam chowder I ever had. All fish super fresh and tasty. The food arrives quickly and hot. The service is excellent. We will make this our “go to” place.
We love Mar Belo for many reasons: ambience, great food and value and the best Sangria. This was the first time we sat in the bar room with the TV. The waiters seemed to be confused with who was taking and not taking our orders.
This was my second time dining at Mar Belo and the food and service was again impeccable. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants.
Best Garlic chicken ever..
Great birthday celebration
Excellent staff, food was delicious! We will be back next month!
Everything was excellent !
We have dined there before
The couple we dined with also enjoyed everything
Will return and recommend to friends andfamily
My wife and I went to Mar Belo for a quiet Saturday night dinner. She is not a fan of spicy food, so went primarily as an accommodation to me. It was a very enjoyable night for both of us. I had the pork & clams and she had the chicken in garlic sauce. Both dishes were very good and reasonably priced. The dining room was cozy and tasteful, and they did their best to spread guests around. The salient attribute we most appreciated, however, was the solicitousness of the staff - without being intrusive. They were not only friendly, but seemed genuinely interested in ensuring that we enjoyed both their restaurant and their cuisine. Clearly they take pride in both and it shows. Will we go back? Yes, for sure.
I introduced 2 friends to Mar Belo and they loved it. Wednesday steak nights are the best!!
If you like Portuguese food it is a must try. My wife had the swordfish special and I had the paella.
We had an absolutely delicious dinner (Mariscada and Zarzuela). Our drinks were perfect and the service was excellent. Always enjoy Mar Belo and they seem to continually strive to give you a special experience.
Outstanding time with friends!! Our waiter was fantastic and even brought out a complimentary after dinner drink. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Went to Mar Belo's before a show at Axelrod Theater this past Saturday night. Hadn't been there is a very long time. They did change the menu, and excluded my favorite meal, however I ordered the chicken with saffron rice and it was delicious. The couple with us also enjoyed their meal. Would recommend this restaurant and plan on returning.
Everything was very good except the food. I did not care for the red snapper, Ii tasted more like flounder than a snapper. My husbands paella was dry. Sorry...
From the welcome to the end of the meal our party of six where very pleased. Our sever Gabriel was outstanding. He gave us the attention and his. Slurs opinions on our choice of meals.
We will definitely be back!!!
Best place to have a quiet relaxing dinner with friends and family. great food and service is the best
Everything was wonderful. Our server George was great and made sure we had everything we needed. I love this place and will definitely be back!
Carlos was outstanding, as always! He is one of our favorite waiters in Monmouth and Ocean County. The food was amazing, too! An overall wonderful experience!
Overall was great but just a few things. Scallop appetizer was a under done and regarding the shrimp dish, the Shrimp are not deveined!!! Yuk..!!!!!
