Portugal: Land of Explorers
In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil.
Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!

This was my 3rd time here in a week. I could not resist coming back. This time me and my date shared the Mussels App which was really good, especially dipping the Portuguese bread in the gravy. For dinner I had the “Lobster Risotto” and my date had the “Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce”, my risotto was spot on delicious. My date could not compliment her meal enough, she absolutely loved it. For dessert I had the “Serradura” and she had “Flan” with Frangelica on it. Both were out of this world delicious.
I only wish Open Table would allow the posting of pictures because the presentation of these meals are as beautiful as they are delicious, the Lobster Risotto looked so good, I just sat and looked at it for a few minutes before finally devouring it.
I plan on trying everything in the menu, including there daily specials. So far, I have been totally satisfied.

Another great evening at Mar Belo. I have dined here over a dozen times and the food is consistently great every time I come. Sangria, shrimp in garlic, filet mignon, shish kebab were all terrific. Great service from Carlos as always. Can’t wait to go back.

Good Portuguese food without the trip to Ironbound Newark. Food is always wonderful with great portions. Excellent attentive service. CoD was a little too salty but the snapper made up for it. Apps are all delicious!

The food was ok, was a little disappointed by the paehla. The lobster was overcooked and the dish tated like yellow rice with seafood on top. Maybe this is what it should taste like but I had paehla before and it had more character to it and flavor.The service was excellent. Staff was attentive and ready to serve. The sangria was very good also. A bit pricey for whst we ordered.

Last night was another dinner at Mar Belos. I enjoyed the Shish Kebob so much the last time, I decided to try another meat dish. This time was the 60 ounce Tomahawk Steak with Broccoli Rab and Potatoes.
What a delicious HUGE steak this was, again cooked to perfection. A perfect Medium Rare. The chefs in this place are great.
The bartender made me my pitcher of Red Sangria, also fantastic, and I was again in an eating paradise.
Prior to ordering, a waiter brought out an uncooked Tomahawk steak dressed very nicely on a platter, to show me the quality of the steak and the enormous size. That sold me and I ordered it. This was a very classy thing to do. No other place will do this because they probably buy pre cut, pre wrapped frozen steaks. But in Mar Belos, EVERYTHING is fresh and they are proud to show you. You will find NO canned, boxed, frozen, pre made or powdered foods here.
The waiters and the bartender “German”, could not have been more hospitable, polite and professional.
The prices are extremely reasonable, considering the 5 star meals and desserts that are served.
The atmosphere gives you a warm, elegant dining experience with the aura of Manhattan.
I will be back and I’m told they have plans to make your dining experience out on the beautiful patio even more enjoyable this year. I can’t wait, bu until then, I will be dining in the beautiful dining room.

We went on Valentine’s Day so it was a bit crowded. Service was still outstanding and food was delicious. Will definitely be going back!

This was a classy and elegant dining experience. A Manhattan experience without the high cost.
The food was exquisite, the service was top notch and the atmosphere was wonderful.
I started with a pitcher of red sangria and it was the best I’ve ever had. The appetizer was the most tender calamari I’ve ever eaten. I then had the pleasure of having the Filet Mignon Shish Kebab with jumbo shrimp and Spanish potatoes and veggies. A meal fit for a king and that’s what I felt like, a “King”, cause that’s the way I was treated and fed.
Everything was prepared and cooked to perfection. The staff could not have been more polite, professional and knowledgeable. The flan for dessert was homemade and delicious. Great job Mar Belos in providing the Long Branch area with such a wonderful place to eat. This place beats all the Portuguese Restaurants I’ve eaten at in Newark (which is known for Portuguese food).
I will be back many times and will be sure to share my experiences with everyone I know.
