In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil.
Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!
Always a great time! The food and sangria were excellent!
Great place with great food and service
We ate at Mar Belo with six of our friends. All eight dinners were excellent and no one had a complaint!
The staff is always so welcoming, accommodating and kind when we are there. They always make sure we have enough room for our daughter in a stroller.
Food and service was wonderful. Nice and quiet.
Fabulous service and food. Our server was incredibly attentive and helpful. Wonderful Spanish and Portuguese cuisine.
As good if not better than Portuguese restaurants in Ironbound, Newark! Having just moved to the area we are very excited to have discovered such an excellent restaurant.. If I had only one minor complaint it would be that the coveted “Spanish” fried potatoes though tasty, could have been crisper...
The food was excellent, nice atmosphere. Service was great, very attentive, always checking to see if need anything. Highly recommend. Can't wait to go back
This was my second time at Mar Belo. Food and service excellent!
One of our favorite places to dine. Just as good as the restaurants in Newark
Always a great meal and a great waiter Carlos. A+
Everyone’s food was amazing except for mine. The sea bass was a little fishy and over salted. The list of specials for a Friday night were extremely lacking. The Manhattan’s that I ordered were extremely weak and the service overall was not great. I had asked for a private room, which we received & were the only party for most of our time there, therefore I expected exceptional dedicated service. There were numerous things that we asked for that we either never received and/or had to request multiple times. I made eye contact w/our server & raised my hand and was ignored multiple times. Our meals and coffee/tea were not brought out together. This was a special occasion as I am getting engaged & we were introducing the matriarchs of each of our families. I have frequented this establishment in the past which is why I picked it for this event. I was quite disappointed especially considering the amount of money that I spent.
Mar Belo is always excellent. The food, service, choices, preparation, always exemplary.
We went on Lobster Night and enjoyed bread, butter, olives and wine before our appetizer. The special corn and potatoe soup was quite good, with little bits of bacon, cheese and herbs. My Dad had the two Lobsters with Spanish potatoes and he couldn't have been happier. My Mom had the Rack of Lamb with Linguini in Marinara sauce with mushrooms and also string beans and carrots and she loved her meal. I had the Filet Mignon with vegetables and Spanish Potatoes. Also very good. The only disappointment was I asked for Roasted Potatoes, because I don't care for Spanish Potatoes and Mar Belo was not making them that night.
Dessert my Mom & Dad got Espresso, Decaf and Regular and I got the Chocolate Mousse special. All excellent.
One of our favorite places. Great service compliments the great food!
Nice bustling atmosphere but mediocre meal
Our fifth visit. The food is dependably excellent. The last two visits the noise level prevented table conversation even though we were seated beside each other. We needed several clarifications on the menu specials from another server with a less pronounced accent who, incidentally took over and brought our check after we were sitting, finished, for a lengthy period of time.
Weeknights are definitely a better experience than weekends!
Since there was an ongoing party of 36 while we were dining the service was slower than usual but the food was served piping hot and very freshly made which made up for any delay. Staff was gracious and understanding and food was as always great!
I've been to Mar Belo quite a few times, and the food and service is always magnificent. The wait staff is very attentive. I've had the skirt steak, shish kebab, paehla, and other dishes - never had a bad meal. Even my mom said her steak was the most tender she's ever had. We went for her birthday and they gave her a free dessert and sang to her. And the sangria is yummy too! I always consider it a plus when you can go to a fine restaurant near the shore that has its own parking lot. If you go early, before 6pm'ish on a weekend, it's never crowded but a reservation is a good idea.
had a very nice dinner food was good as was the service
Always a fabulous meal w very attentive staff.
We've been to Mar Belo several times and they have yet to disappoint. The only problem with this place is I always over eat and pay the price about 2: 00 in the morning We brought a mother couple and they also enjoyed themselves.
Everything was absolutely perfect! It was a birthday celebration for my husband, and my daughter was also there. Since I booked our table through "Open Table", I was able to indicate the occasion to them and sure enough, at dessert time, they came over and sang to him - I have never seen him look happier!
We were all absolutely stuffed because everything tasted so great. We will definitely be returning there. Yes, it is on the expensive side, but it is worth every penny! And it was a little more expensive because we all wanted to try many things. I think there are many ways to eat there more economically than we did, but again, worth every darn penny! The service was OUTSTANDING and my daughter had never been to a restaurant that is that attentive and she really loved it.
Atmosphere great, service excellent will repeat again
Delish good service
Perfect vibe. Menu that lives up to its billing; in a word ...delicious! Vincent Coeta
My second visit and as happy as I was at my first. Great parking, beautiful restaurant, delicious food (fresh seafood) and very attentive service. And, it as lobster night too!!!! Great deal.
Can't wait to go back!
Thursday twin lobster night was delicious. The lobsters were tender and sweet and reasonably priced at $29.99.
The best restaurant in Long Branch. Ferry street like quality
its our favorite place! absolutely wonderful! flavors are so rich and always consistent
Our last visit was a few years ago and was great. The entire experience this evening was incredible! The food was incredibly perfect, the octopus cut like butter and the generous paella was perfectly seasoned. The attentiveness afforded us was exceptional and the noise level easily allowed conversation. Great food and excellent value all served up by a sensational staff!!
We go to Mar Belo often because it is always excellent. Their garlic shrimp can't be beat . The rack of lamb is my go to. It is enough for you to share. Pork chops and their shish-ka-Bob also a great choice. You can't go wrong. Good service.
!st time with a bunch of guys....service was excellent and so was the food. I'll be back with the wife.
Food is always delicious! The best Sangria. Overall great food and service !
Excellent paella, chock full of seafood. My wife had the halibut and loved it. Friends both enjoyed their meals immensely. The service was right on as well as the ambiance. Would definitely go back.
My husband and I ordered the Halibut special it was excellent.
Regular paella was awful. No taste at all lots of mussels but the lobster was a joke. Dry, stringy, tasteless. But the restaurant was pretty. Wouldn't go back. Paella should be the best dish at a Spanish Portuguese restaurant. This was the worst I ever had.
Great time with my wife for our anniversary!! Excellent service and food!
Food was fresh and very tasty. There was a fascinating variety. Service was charming. Beef in shish kebab was outstanding. Paelha very good and abundant, although the chicken was a little dry. I would definitely go back, one of the beteter restaurants in the area.
Nice that they have parking available. Food was very good, shrimp in garlic sauce and paella and mariscada all very good . Surprised no lobster on menu but they have a Thursday night lobster special . Sangria was excellent . Flan and coffee were a perfect ending . Will definitely return .
Went there with friends over dinner. Food was ok ...not bad but disappointed on the expected EUROPEAN taste ... service was poor , restaurant was full and it seems they struggle in managing that many customers at once
