In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil.
Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!

We had the swordfish special and as always its cooked perfectly and its a wonderful piece of fish. What does not get enough recognition is their wonderful way with vegetables. They cook veggies perfectly.
So as usual a great meal with good service. What more can I say.
very nice evening with friends. It was steak night so some of us had the filet dinner for $21. Mine was rare as requested with mashed potatoes and broccoli. The steak was delicious. I also had chocolate mousse for dessert. It too was delicious. All in all a very nice evening.
Very disappointing. Needed to eat someplace afterward because food not edible. The waiter also acted insulted when I asked a question of my friend when he was giving the table the specials. Never go again.
Service was the best! Food was very good. Cheesecake not good lol
Always a great time. Have taken friends each of 5 visits; and tried different entrees each time. Shush kabob, zarzuela and steak are my favorites.
Love this restaurant-the layout, atmosphere and service are all to my liking. The food was delicious and the Sangria was wonderful. I will be back without a doubt.
Great service and awesome food. Carlos and the whole crew were very attentive a d did not miss a detail. 👍
Waited 45 mins wth a reservation for a table.
Server was well informed and very pleasant.
Service out of kitchen took forever.
Ordered around 8:15 waited until 9 for 1st course.
Ran ten here many times before and this was the worst.
Very good Portugese cuisine. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced
great food, delicious!! Wonderful service!Loved the sselections. food done your way.
The food is consistently great! The sangria was excellent, too!
This place was packed for a Thursday night, I guess because of the specials! Everything was cooked perfectly, and the Portuguese dishes were very authentic. We go there often and their great!
First visit, but not last. Food excellent abd service impeccable.
A rare opportunity to enjoy authentic and excellent Portuguese cuisine. We enjoyed it very much.
Staff was very nice. From the host to the rest of the staff, very pleasant. Witnessed a very rude customer and host never lost her calm. Actually apologize even though it was not her fault. I think he was agitated because he had to wait. It was very busy.
Food is great
But it was our anniversary and nobody congratulated us
Are meals were very flavorful and cooked just right .Service was good will definitely be going back next time we are back in the area
Fantastic find. Service excellent
Food choices excellent
Would highly recommend
Pleasant surprise. Have not had great Portuguese cuisine in Long Branch since I guess I have been spoiled by Ferry Street in Newark but this restaurant rates with those. Recommended!!
always a treat to eat at Mar Belos. My favorite is Thursday night lobster special but we went on a Sunday this week. Very nice people work there. And the food never disappoints
Very nice place for group outing. Ambiance and noice level is just right and the food is absolutely amazing. Our group of 8 ordered just about everything on the menu and all was incredible. One steak did go back as it was way overdone, but manager quickly rectified the situation. The deserts are equally tasty.
We are from North Jersey and frequent the Spanish /Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound section of Newark.
Unfortunately, Mar Belo can not compare to places like Forno's when it comes to price and portion size.
One bright side however was the grilled baby octopus - very tasty and nice portion size.
We started with the Sangria, which was very good. I had the seafood paella which was delicious! Lots of seafood and seasoned very well. My friend had the garlic chicken that he really enjoyed. To finish we had a Portuguese Creme Brûlée and Flan for dessert. The service was excellent and we would definitely return.
We love it there! Food is wonderful derful! And the service is superb! Definitely get a reservation on. Weekends!
Honored reservations on a Saturday night. Good food and service.
Upon entering receptionist/hostess did not look up from tablet or smile, however I asked for a quiet spot if possible which she stated that she could move us to a different table and did so. Overhead music was little to loud making one have to strain to hear specials. We were a party of five when I asked about size octopus appetizer was told enough for one or two however, two orders was more than enough for a five. The scallop appetizer although delicious had only 3 scallops per order. The rest of meal was very good the service good.
Ample portions, very good quality. Service was attentive. If you like restaurants in Newark's Ironbound, you'll like Mar Belo.
Needs background music. Either Latin or even Bocelli-like would add to ambiance. Could also block out view of parking lot with potted plants.
Went for the lobster special on Thursday night. Was not disappointed. The lobsters were perfectly cooked and were sweet and tender. Husband wasn’t crazy about his shrimp and steak kabob. He thought it overly salty.
Maybe your portions are a little too large, but your food is delicious. service was good, but a little slow getting drinks.
I have eaten here many times the food never disappoints. Our only negative is the noise level. It was so loud over the weekend it was hard to hear my table talking. But we all enjoyed our food
Great service, chorizo appetizer, scallops/shrimp over linguine and seafood paella entrees, molten chocolate cake dessert and vino verde white wine... all delicious! We will be back for sure!
We had an excellent dinner at Mar Belo. We started with their sangria which was very good. The shrimp appetizer, red snapper and steak with shrimp were all delicious. The service was also perfect. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. He was very helpful with understanding the gluten-free options. They ran out of the filet mignon/shrimp shish kebob, but it looked great and we will be back!
Our server was excellent and the dessert was good, but the rest of the meal was disappointing. We ordered the octopus appetizer, which was bland and a little on the tough side. We also ordered the clams and shrimp appetizers, which were totally under seasoned and very oily. My husband enjoyed the twin lobsters special, but again, very overwhelming. The front room gets very loud. I will not be returning.
Mar-Belo has a simple but good menu, with an emphasis on fish and shellfish. The zarzuela was very good, which e shared as a main dish. We had two appetizers -- mussels in sauce and the scallops. Because it was our anniversary we also had desert. First time, we have tried their dessert. Very nice chocolate cake with cream. If you like Iberian (Spain and Portugal) food, give it a try.
Never disappoints. Staff is very attentive, well trained and friendly.
Great place a little tucked away in the neighborhood. Food was really good and the service was attentive. Will recommend and return
Had a great time dining with my family. Staff was great and polite. Overall had a great experience. Food was fantastic and Sangria was delicious.
One of our favorite restaurants; never disappoints.
