Manuel's Bread Cafe Ratings and Reviews
We chose Manuel's because my wife and I frequent it for snacks and lunch. I've never been there for dinner, so I booked a company dinner there. I was extremely impressed, as they met all expectations and I was vary satisfied with not only the service, but the food as well! It's a vey cute area and this restaurant fits right in.
Cheese plate was weak: burnt toast, cheese was average, jam was like Kroger brand.
Ceaser salad: very stale croutons, below average sauce, lettuce. That was it. No anchovies even though the option was on the menu. The bread that came with it was mediocre with butter packets like Dennys.
Filet: raw, covered in rosemary, had to be sent back. Not salted. Veggies were OK.
Clam pasta (special): sauce was watery and tasted like warm milk. Peas and carrots were obviously from a bag of frozen veggies. Clams cooked OK.
Waiter was OK but lacked knowledge about wine list and beer. Not the type of waiter one would expect at a place this expensive.
Dessert was good!
Overall, disappointed and won't be coming back despite all the other good reviews. There are many places that are much much better in the area. The food simply wasn't good.
We were at Manuel's for Thanksgiving dinner. The menu was refreshingly non-traditional, although turkey and cranberries were available for those who wanted them. The vegetarian offerings were limited but tasty. We added a crudite platter, a cheese platter, and homemade cake to our meal and were pleased with all three (especially the cheese). The restaurant itself was bright and airy thanks to the many windows, and the atmosphere was charming. But the real star of the show -- beyond the food -- was the staff. They made us feel welcome and took care of our every need, promptly and pleasantly.
We made a reservation thinking we would be having a nice thanksgiving day meal. We were highly disappointed. From a small uninspired and overpriced menu, to a waitstaff and ambience looking and feeling bored, it absolutely did not feel like a restaurant that should be charging these prices. We ordered, hoping the food would make it all worth it, yeah no, dry, dry and tasteless. My husband's thanksgiving plate was sad, and he's not a very picky food person. He didn't enjoy a single thing on that plate. My fish was deep fried (no flavor but probably still the "best" of what we got) and the sides felt like microwave last minute rice that screamed, we don't care, covered in sauce packet flavored Chinese watered out duck sauce. Don't even get me started on the fries I ordered on the side, any restaurant that can't do fries shouldn't be in business and they calling them almost "famous" (famous for being such soggy mess maybe) made it even more disgusting, they came with a dipping sauce that must have been messed up, can't imagine that's how they serve it on a regular basis. Tasted like a store bought dressing they threw loads of the canned minced garlic in and called it a day. Worse money ever spent on food. I will not return, especially since there are so many other good options out there. Left feeling sad and mad.
The food here is pricey, but really great and worth the cost! Usually the service is superior, but our last time we had probably the most inept server we've ever had at ANY upscale restaurant. He had trouble remembering our order, apparently didn't fire the order until way too late and was just generally bad. Two hours is much too long to spend on a simple meal!
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening out at Manuel's. We celebrated our One Year Anniversary and the service and good were excellent. Our fabulous server was April and she was more than knowledgeable, friendly, and had an impressive pace. It's definitely a place we will return to, as well as, recommend to all of our friends and family.
I came to Manuel's for my 22nd Birthday brunch and was so pleased with the whole day! The service was great considering there was 18 of us at the table. I was able to enjoy time with my closest friends and family and not worry about the service or ambiance lacking. It truly was the perfect spot to gather and eat wonderful food and enjoy a beautiful part of Augusta! Would definitely recommend!
Manuel's is one of my favorites because it's such a quaint cafe with local dishes/ingredients. I love the cheese plates and, of course, the deserts. Plus the neighborhood is beautiful; visitors to Augusta are always surprised to see such a beautiful community along the river. This visit the food was very much up to par; I had the stuffed flounder special, one guest had duck, and one had a steak. All were excellent, although I would I would have preferred a filet as the steak. Good wine list, excellent salads, a great place for a quiet dinner.
Service was sketchy.
We asked specifically about the daily special, Ahi Tuna Eggs Benedict. We have ordered this special before. The first time it was a tuna steak, the second time tuna patty. The patty wasn't as good. We asked if it was steak or patty this time. We were assured it was a tuna steak. When it arrived, of course, it was the patty. Too much trouble to send it back but a huge disappointment.
We ordered Bloody Marys, they weren't very good. When the check arrived we realized they were made with wine, not vodka. The waiter should have pointed that out. We didn't order Wine Bloody Marys, we order Bloody Marys.
We've been here several times for brunch, this visit aside, it has always been a pleasure.
Manuel's has become our go-to restaurant for all special occasions as well as for a quiet Sunday evening meal. The wine selection is extensive; the staff are especially knowledgeable and pleasant; and the setting is as close to Europe as we are going to get in Augusta/North Augusta. Many menu items are grown/raised at the local organic farm. We love Manuel's!
Went here for a special occasion, white coat ceremony at medical college, for my daughter. The community is gorgeous and nice to walk around. The meal was good, though quite expensive for what it was. Bill for six people, with dinner and a glass of wine and one appetizer for the table was 380, to me that's a bit pricey, particularly for the decent but not spectacular food.
I have been to Manuels a number of times and have always had stellar service with the exception of this last time. The guy who waited on us was so scatterbrained and all over the place. He was reading the lunch features from his book, no problem, but he left one out.. my mom and I had to listen another server explain it at a different table. I can see that happening if you memorized them.. not reading verbatim from a paper. I also asked him for something to accompany my lunch and he scoffed as he walked away. Definitely won't keep me from going back as this is my favorite place in augusta and we live in the neighborhood but if I see him again, I will ask for another server.
Group of friends meeting for dessert and conversation. A great selection of desserts. The server was slow to respond. We started with the Poutine, ordered two for the table to share. It was really tasty and great to share. We told the server we just wanted to order dessert. She took our drink orders, coffees and tea and when she brought the regular coffees they were not hot, twice she was asked to refill, and first time they were still cold. The desserts were all very good and large portions. My biggest criticism was the time she took to take and deliver our orders, being only dessert it should not have taken 30 minutes for 8 desserts.
This was our first time at this restaurant and we had mixed responses. While we all enjoyed our first course of salads and evening specials ( chilled shrimp and a salmon salad), the entrees were a different story. The first problem was running out of an evening special, as well as a regular menu entree item. What we did receive was good, but not fantastic. The tenderloin was chewy, which is a definite no-no, although it was properly cooked in regards to temperature. The chicken piccata was much drier than anticipated, but had decent flavor. More of the lemon caper butter sauce would have helped. The final entree was an evening seafood/stuffed shrimp pasta special, which received a glowing report. The desserts were mixed too. The grasshopper cake was delicious, but the chantilly berry cake was very dense. We are definitely willing to go back and see if maybe it was just an off night.
