Mantra Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
As usual food was excellent - but, we were kept waiting for 50 minutes for our 8.30 reservation. Hostess was clueless, lied to us when we arrived saying "just setting up your table". Asked to speak to Manager, after we'd been fobbed off twice more with "table will be ready soon" - but no manager ever appeared! I wonder if there was a manager there. Very, very disappointing as we have been there many times without a problem. Will be unlikely to go back again.
Every time I go to Mantra, I wonder why I don't go more often. The food is authentic and flavorful, flavorful in a way that you taste every wonderful herb, spice and other ingredient. It is always great: great service, lovely ambiance, friendly vibe. It is far and away the best Indian restaurant in this part of New Jersey, and on a par with the best of New York City. This time I will go again soon.
Mantra never disappoints. We brought friends this time to enjoy a first rate Indian dining experience. We started with the table side chat for 4 of us. My wife had the usual shrimp saag. I had chicken tikka masala and our two friends had chicken korma. Jasmine rice and onion kulcha were fragrant and hot. Kitchen is always mindful of our requests for either mild or medium spiceyness. Ambiance and service are first rate. Just an all around great dining experience.
The best way to sum up how my husband and I feel about Mantra is.....it is hands down our favorite restaurant. We TRY to go other places, we really do, but we always end up going to Mantra because it is simply the best food anywhere. Not to mention the ambiance and the doting and efficient "team" (I don't want to call them "staff" because they generate such a feeling of family and synergy, you never feel like they are employees, you feel like they are owners) They treat us like royalty every time we go there - they greet us by name, they meet our every request and the food always is beyond what we expect. My husband and I always arrive 45 minutes before our reservation because we enjoy having a creative Indian inspired cocktail in the lounge along with the gorgeous silky jazz that plays there on Saturday nights and we want the night to last. Once we sit down we are greeted with a sample of some gourmet treat or other, always new, always delicious. No matter what you order there, if you are a traditionalist like me and want authentic Indian cuisine, or if you are a Westerner and prefer a meat and potatoes meal, you can get exactly what you want and 100 percent know you are going to get fine dining. We never order dessert tho - only because we are always beyond stuffed from all the courses they lavish upon us. As always, we have nothing but accolades to serve up for Mantra. Our favorite restaurant bar none.
Each time I think Mantra has maxed out on its potential for wowing us (can't imagine them doing better than the time before) they surprise me. This is, as I have said each review, my husband and my favorite place to dine. We both always want to go here on date night and often have to force ourselves to go somewhere else once in a while just so we hold it as a treat, but we always cave in and go whenever we pick the date night spot. The food is better than any NYC Indian cuisine on Zagats or anywhere. The Indian specialties are perfect - the right balance for every taste - my husband's mild preference and my over-the-top quest for the most spicy. Both are accommodated. The menu has a range of the very authentic Indian exotic cuisine to the choices for the meat-n-potatoes American guy who feels daunted by adventurous cuisine. My brother-in-law has gone with us and ordered pork chops - just a touch of Indian seasoning to make it different from home, but he was blown away by the flavor and was still in his comfort zone. The cocktails are inventive ( Love the Goan Martini with a Lychee fruit floating in it) and fabulous wines, beers and standards
too. The jazz trio on Saturday nights is sexy and fabulous and makes you forget you are on Rt 4 in NJ. I look forward to going to Mantra all week. Even the smell when you walk in the door is enough to make you cut your bar cocktails a bit short - you can't wait to taste everything. This trip our dear bartender treated us to our cocktails, a way to recognize that we are "regulars" and that was such a nice and lovely gesture. It really made us feel special. We are going away for a couple of weeks and wanted to have our "last supper" at Mantra before our travels. I can't wait to go back when we get home. If Mantra were a club, I would be the first member. We love all of the staff who treat us like family and the Naan bread should come with a warning label
- I tend to eat way too much - never regret one bite!
I have been coming to this restaurant consistently every couple of months for the past six years at their Paramus location. However Mother's Day will be the last time I come to this restaurant. The food was absolutely apalling. The buffet curry dishes were very bland and tasteless. The chicken was dry. There was a tremendous amount of food coloring in the tandoori chicken. The freshly made Nan-breads were hard.
Another table was also commenting how tasteless the food was and were demanding to speak to the head chef from the maître d'. I strongly suspect the original chef is now gone, maybe he's moved on to their jersey city location or somewhere else. This restaurant went from being the best Indian restaurant in Bergen County/Rockland County area to now one of the worst. There was absolutely no value in the food. Save your money and try different places because this is no longer is the mantra of the past.
Have been to Mantra several times and always enjoyed it. Took my sister there for her birthday on Saturday night.... extremely disappointed, my husband ordered the Lobster Entree, there was barely any Lobster in the $29 dish. Spoke to both manager and server who could not have cared less; they offered us a complimentary dessert, we don't eat dessert. We just wanted a little acknowledgement, the manager scurried away and never returned. No apologies, no effort to correct the dish which he barely ate, too bad, won't be back.
This is my husband and my favorite restaurant. We have to resist the urge to come here EVERY date night. It is our favorite. The ambiance is modern and chic, the staff is very welcoming and professional, the drinks are delicious, the bar had a string quartet on Saturday nights, the bar tender knows the exact drinks we like, but most of all, the food is unrivaled. Delicious. I would weigh 600 pounds if I ate here every night and for sure if I was asked to choose my last meal, it would be at Mantra! But let's hope not any time soon! Love it there!
My husband and I were visiting the area for Thanksgiving and decided to try Mantra the night before the holiday based on recommendations here. It was fabulous! Definitely the best Indian food we have had and we have a lot of Indian restaurants close to home. Creative dishes, perfectly cooked. Tandoor chicken that was actually moist! And a lovely waitstaff and owner who stopped by to say "hello".
We went, as a party of 5, to Mantra to celebrate a birthday. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Service was great. Server was very attentive and explained the dishes (e.g. spiciness, sauciness, etc.) clearly. Food was delicious. We shared 3 appetizers and enjoyed them all. Portions were generous and we were lucky enough to take home leftovers to enjoy later. We'll be back.
