Mantra JC Ratings and Reviews
An absolutely perfect dining experience! Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and very helpful. The food (appetizers, main course, and bread basket) was delicious. I have been here several times, but this time I sensed a big overall improvement. This is my favorite restaurant in Jersey City, and I recommend it highly.
Made a reservation for 13 people. Called the day before to confirm and they said it would be no problem. Business dinner during the week so there was only about 4 tables in the whole place but the service was still slow and we sat for 20-30 min waiting for drinks sometimes. The food was decent and the prices were as expected.
Kitchen was a bit slow at first and they were out of Gin so no cocktail for me, but they made up for it in flavorful, large, expansive menu, good value, food and service. I never had to want for my water to be refilled or the next course. I recommend you check it out.
I haven't written any reviews before, but this time, I am moved to write.
Although the food is quite tasty, the portions were unusually small, and the service was slow.
It's not Mantra's fault that there were children SCREAMING for the 2 hours we were there. Although, one might imagine that the owner could have have mentioned something to the parents. So, the noise level was not "energetic"; the relentless screaming drowned out our conversation, and there were only 10 other people in the restaurant there that night.
What was most disturbing IS Mantra's sneaky bill. We added our typical 15-20 % tip, but then when examining the bill more carefully, noticed that !8% service charge had ALREADY BEEN INCLUDED in the bill. When my husband questioned the waiter, saying "I see you have already included the tip", the waiter said, " no, it's not the tip.....it's the service charge".
We did not include the tip.
One wonders, how else are they cheating? There are numerous ways a restaurant can "cheat".
That wrapped it up for us. There are many terrific indian restaurants in JC, therefore no reason whatsoever, to return to cheaters, with small portions.
I usually avoid an Indian buffet, but the one here was surprisingly good. The choices were different than what you'd otherwise expect. Food was excellent!
The only non food issue I found was the way their buffet was arranged. I think they never expected to start serving a buffet, so it gets pretty crowded in the narrow galley. Hope they take a note.
We went in a group of 4 for a business dinner during a weeknight. Place was easy to find. We had a reservation and table was ready when we got there. It was not crowded but not deserted either. We stuck to Vegetarian food and it tasted good - especially the okra. The Indian bread basket was good quality too. The food arrived in reasonable amount of time and no complaints there. Overall ambience was pleasant and it was not noisy. Our table was a little smaller for 4 people at a business dinner. When the food arrived we had to almost rub elbows with the serving bowls. We did not order any drinks beyond the glasses of water and ordered rather moderate amount of food, so it was disappointing to see the table was still so cramped up. I think they should consider replacing the fancy wide serving bowls with smaller diameter bowls. Also it would have been nice to hear a YES rather than a NO when we requested the wait staff to serve the food on the plates rather than we having to keep passing around the bowls.
Mantra is by far my favorite restaurant in Jersey City. I choose it for every sort of occasion as they always adjust to our needs and they are very attentive. The food is great, the place is clean, the staff is friendly, and the asparagus koftas are to die for. No joke, it's an amazing dish.
I made a big reservation, arrived with a few more people at the last minute, and Rex rearranged tables during the busiest time of the day so that we could all sit together and enjoy our meal. Go to Mantra. You won't regret it. Go for the lunch special so that you can try a bit of different dishes as well.
We wanted something a little different after our big Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner so we thought we would try a place that we had walked by many times but never visited. We arrived early and for a while we were the only ones in the restaurant; not such a bad thing when you consider that the server Peter was able to give us very hands on attention. The atmosphere was delightful and warm and the service was outstanding. We will be back.
Contemporary Indian- fresh and very flavorful. Not a huge menu which to me means freshness and it didn't disappoint. Tandoori chicken served with a wonderful masala sauce. Pouched beet salad with strawberries and blueberries over arugula. The chicken korma was tender and delicious.
We had the toga josh the afghan kabab, bhindi fry and parathas and they were really really good. They had an event upstairs and they shunted us to the basement which was not great and almost spoiled it for us. That's the only thing that bothered us otherwise everything was great including the rasmalai in the end. Derive folks were very nice and courteous.
The spot was nice, but there was a baby shower on the first level, that we had to walk through as we were taken to the basement. (kinda tacky I thought) Which although was fairly nice, had a big screen tv with the game on. Not ecactly what I was hoping for a romantic evening. I'm sure the party was paying more then we dropped, but our meal was still well over $100. Anyway, food was good, service was good, drinks very good, very nice staff, just would have prefered a table upstairs.
Decided on this restaurant for my mom's 60th birthday dinner. We were a small group of 5. The staff was extremely friendly and polite. Everything we ate was really good, including the complimentary appetizer from the chef. The food came out in a timely matter and the drinks were delish! We had 7P reservations and was pretty empty when we got in there but by 8, 8:30 there was decent crowd. If you love Indian food this a great find in the area. The setting is especially nice for a special occasion.
If you are looking for artfully presented and deliciously executed Indian food, Mantra is for you! They started our meal with a free appetizer, which was this yummy bite I can only describe as an "indian tostada" that came with cilantro and tamarind sauces -- yum! Then we had the special appetizer, which was perfectly cooked plump scallops in a cilantro-based sauce. We then split a paneer dish and the mushroom dish and an order of garlic naan. We left stuffed and even had leftovers!
They have a fully stocked bar too, and the restaurant definitely has a "cool" feel. Definitely great for when you want something fancier than what you'll find on Newark Ave near JSQ.
I visited Mantra JC For the First time with 2 friends. This place came highly Recommended by an Italian Friend of Mine, who I must same has a flare for Indian Food. I was truly Impressed with not Only By The Ambience of this Restaurant, but also by the Variety that was ofered on the Buffet Station.
I am a vegetarian and always find it hard to Enjoy a Buffet, as the Variety is not that great, but this place just blew me over!
I was Happy to see that The Chef/Owner decided to give us a good Variety to Choose From.
Thanks to All the Staff for Great Service, Really tasty Food and No Heart Burns....
Will surely visit again.
We went for Mother's Day so we did the Sunday buffet. The buffet was well organized with many favorites and traditional fare. We all enjoyed sampling the different foods - some of which we wouldn't have been knowledgeable enough to order off the menu. The kids were welcomed and there was plenty of food them to try (not spicy to mildly spicy options). The servers were great with the kids and there were quite a few other children there with families. It was relaxed and fun. We all had a great time and were well fed. You can't beat the price either. We will be going back!
One doesn't expect to find an excellent source of Indian food just across the NJ Transit tunnel from Manhattan in Jersey City. Wow, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Menu choices were diverse with traditional offerings and some combinations I'd never seen before. Well worth a visit. I know if ever I'm in that neck of the woods again that I'll be a repeat visitor, for sure!
One word of caution, though. I was a bit surprised by the size of the bill at the end of the meal. I think because the offereings were so diverse and so good, we sampled so many different offerings we lost sight of how it can add up. So, don't let your gastronomic delight get as far ahead of your pocketbook as did I...
We went here for valentine's day celebration. We ordered Sesame Paneer, the quantity was really small, just three pieces but it was flavorful. We had main course, where quantity was plenty and even the quality was pretty good. We even had leftovers. The ambiance is always great in this restaurant.
One of the fun thing that they did is to tuck a red rose in bill envelop. It was a great surprise. Thank you.
