Mannino's Italian Bistro - Oceanfront
Had dinner at Manninos on 3/16. Everything was superb, even on a very busy Shamrock Marathon weekend. I never write reviews, but had to do so on this occasion. Nice job!
Casual setting with more "upscale" prices. We were seating at a booth by a window and the chipping paint was obvious (including a chunk of plaster just sitting in the window sill). There could be better seats, but we didn't get far into the restaurant.
Our introduction for not having been here before was to drop the regular menus down, give us one copy of the "special" race weekend menu with no further explanation, and put the single drink menu down without saying anything about it at all. We got checked on frequently at first, but it felt awkward as we were trying to share one copy of the special menu, look through a large regular menu, and didn't even realize the drink menu was there. We felt rushed to order.
Service was OK but not exceptional. They were busy, but not overly so. The food was OK. Portions were large, but seemed to lack seasoning. Our calimari appetizer was enough to feed three of us with leftovers but required seasoning and didn't really pair well with the marinara on the side which seemed a bit sweet.
Our meals themselves were piled high. I can recommend the vitello (veal) portabello stack, as long as you ask them to not smother it with so much mozarella. It's hard to tell which is the veal and which is the porrobello without tasting them, but they were juicy and flavorful. Again, once removed from the abundance of mozarella smothering them. The mozarella itself was really good, there was just way too much.
I did have the Italian lemon drop martini as well. I found it to be too sweet and should have asked the splash of sprite be a splash of seltzer instead, but I also find most mixed drinks too sweet. Don't get this one thinking it will have a lemony bite to it. It's not bad, just not what I was hoping for.
Overall I expected a little more from the restaurant, but I was disappointed either. I would eat here again.
This restaurant has the best Italian food! They have an award-winning SHE-CRAB Soup, which is truly amazing!!! Service, atmosphere, everything is well done!! They are very accommodating to larger groups as well.
Whenever we visit Virginia Beach, Mannino’s is our 1st choice for dinner!!
My party of 5 all loved their food, and Ross was a wonderful waiter.
Food was excellent. My husband has a latex allergy and they were very accommodating!
It was the highlight of Restaurant Week. The food was excellent. Our server, Tyler, was a delight. We loved it!
Went during restaurant week, the food was delicious and service was great. I highly recommend this restaurant anytime.
We love the she-Crab soup, but it was not as warm as it should have been. Probably should have sent it back. However, we were in a large crowd, so maybe it was trying to serve that many at once? And that's probably why the noise level seemed high- because of our group!
Still, we will keep coming back. Great waiter!
They were not busy when we arrived but the service was slow. Took forever to get food and even desert. We had to ask for drink refills as our waiter was not very attentive.
Been going to Manino's for 10 years at least. This was by far the most delicious meal I ever had in those years. The soup was amazing as always, the oyster appetizer was incredible & the antipasto plate was perfect. Great service as always.
I am not sure I would recommend Mannios. We went on Valentines Day and they had problems with our open table reservation. They also had problems with the kitchen. It took over 2 hours for our food to come out. The food was good but we were eating it at 10:00pm. The waitress was quite apologetic.
The food was really good, the service was absolutely terrible.
Hey I would recommend this restaurant to all of my friends. The customer service was outstanding and the wait staff was fully attentive to each of us dining at the establishment. It is also good to be greeted and seated during a reservation. Overall outstanding!
Excellent food and service. Crab soup is best i have ever had.
First visit to the Oceanfront location did not disappoint. Same great food and friendly staff.
Food was overpriced and average tasting. Nothing exceptional. Was our Anniversary dinner and we were seated within elbow distance from other folks. Not impressed.
I made my reservation online thru 'open table" for 5:30 Valentines Day. Upon arrival I was told, in no uncertain terms, that there was only one reservation for that time slot and it wasn't me. The restaurant was near empty when we arrived and the hostess finally, and I believe reluctantly, seated us. Our waitress was super. The food was not. The penne pasta was bland with a sauce that was akin to tomato sauce. The fried oysters was dripping in grease. The broccoli was unlike any I had ever eaten (did not eat). The salad dressing on my salad was near tasteless. We ordered White Zinfandel, I believe it was house wine, and it was excellent (the highlight of the night). Overall it was an extremely poor dining experience. I guess it was especially disappointing because I had eaten at the Portsmouth Mannino's and it was delightful. Others have told me that the Virginia Beach Mannino's couldn't compare to the Portsmouth Mannino's. Unfortunately, they are permanently closed.
Very good meal and service. Enjoyed my 60th birthday dinner with my family. Would recommend to others
I didn't expect such great food. I would definitely go back again.
Great food and service. A bit pricey.
Manninos is my favorite place to celebrate special occasions with my family and friends. The food, service and wine list is wonderful.
My family and I had a wonderful meal on Dec 30, 2018. We've been to Mannino's at the oceanfront several times. As usual the she-crab soup was fabulous - the best we've ever tasted. The veal dishes and ravioli that we had were great. And Katie was a fantastic waitress! We'll definitely go back for more!
This is a restaurant we will definitely dine at again and again! We took our 6 year old to a nice dinner before seeing the Christmas lights and this was a hit for us and him! He loved the pasta and we loved our dishes as well. She Crab soup was amazing! Food was authentic, service was great and the restaurant felt warm and inviting. Hubby and I plan on going back for a date night soon!
We enjoyed the authentic Italian cuisine. Our waitress recommended the crab soup which was excellent. It had a rich flavor with ample crab. We tried the Lobster Ravioli, Manicotti, 4 Cheese Ravioli, and Fettuccini Alfredo. All were exceptional, the Alfredo includes a sun-dried tomato that gives it a noticeable tomato flavor, so be sure to request without if you do not enjoy tomato. This was our first time and we will go again.
I love this restaurant. Everything I have ever had has been delicious. I have eaten at all three locations, sorry that the Portsmouth one is gone. Food and service are always excellent. My favorite Italian restaurant anywhere.
Perfectly wonderful as always! Thank you for another celebration meal. John's humpr was perfect for our group. ❤🥂
First time to Virginia Beach area. Restaurant was flexible when we had to be early for our reservation.
I am in Love with this restaurant. The greatest service and excellent food that I've ever tasted in my life. Mangia!!!!!!!!!
great service--good food--very consistent food and cooking
The food and wine were delishous! Our waitress was very good and personable. Very nice even with the nasty storm blowing outside. We were very warm and cozy inside.
Fresh authentic Italian! The Tortellini Mannino was excellent!
Our dinner celebrated our 44th Anniversary. The staff greeting us upon entry with congratulations and a few minutes after being seated we received a nice note signed by the entire staff. As pleasant as all of that was, the food and service were even better. I’d say our dining experience could not have been any better. The portions were substantial and made for a great leftover dinner at home the following night. And if you’d like to have a “I’ve died and gone heaven experience” simply taste the she crab soup. It can’t be described. It must be savored. Incredible all around!
Authentic Italian Cuisine with excellent service.
Our family has dinner every week and we go to Mannino’s quite often. This week we were so happy, to have Kathy and Chad Cooper, family members who live in Delaware come to visit us. We all love their she crab soup. There are actually chunks of crab in the soup and it is always very tasty. Anything you select on the menu I can assure you it will be delicious and memorable.
We received an online recommendation from Open Table to try Manninos. Although we have lived in Virginia Beach 30 + years, we had never been, as we generally try to avoid the oceanfront during the tourist season, so we tried it. What a great surprise! The atmosphere is typically oceanfront casual, but the food is exceptional. Veal saltimbocca and gnocchi: very, very good. The wine list was solid. The clams (white sauce) were outstanding. The cannoli was delightful. We just got back from Italy where we had extraordinary meals. This meal was of comparable taste, quality, and presentation. This is not an overstatement. Our server, John, was pleasant, informative, and attentive. We have added Manninos oceanfront to our list of go-to restaurants.
Love this place!
the food was outstanding.went there 2x in 3 days.I recommend this restaurant to everybody.MONDAYS wine is 1/2 price. the she crab soup the best in virgina beach.the veal parm was excellent.the service was outstanding.i recommend this restaurant.
Don't be mislead by ANY negative reviews (for example one comparing the marinara sauce to Chef Boy R Dee, what a bad joke and a disservice to a fine restaurant), this is the real thing. The signature marinara is to die for. We had lasagna (as good as any we've had at a restaurant) and chicken parmigiana (also excellent). Portions are generous, service was prompt, friendly and attentive. Calamari was tender and delicious. Took a bowl of she crab soup with us, also excellent. Do not miss this place, it's down home Italian! There is no substitute for a real Italian family restaurant. Skip the corporate joints like Maggiano's, Olive Garden, Bravo, etc and try Mannino's, you will not regret it.
We arrived at 6:45 got dinner and did not leave until 9:00. Took them forever to take our order and then to serve us. And the restaurant was half empty!
