We have enjoyed Manhattan’s many times...LOVE the food and atmosphere!
However, our server on this visit was not attentive. Example, as he approached our table the first words out of his mouth were “you know what you want?” We hadn’t even been given any kind of menu or drink list yet. Another gentleman brought over two menus as our server went to get my husbands drink. The nightly specials were never brought up to us, and we had to ask for a second drink. After the meal was delivered there was not even a check back to see how we were doing.
This was all very surprising to us as we’ve not had that experience at Manhattan’s previously.
Wonderful evening with outstanding food, service and entertainment. Thank you for making my milestone birthday so special!
Volare. Uh oh.
Place tries to be old school Italian, complete with cheezy entertainment. This isn't the red and white checkered table of Billy Joel songs, it's white linen and overly friendly maitre d. If that's your thing, great. If you are any sort of aspiring foodie, Run. Away.
I think the review folks are going to catch on that this is probably my 6th review in the last 6 months. There is no other place like Manhattan. The atmosphere should be listed first, just because it is very unique these days. I have a single dish that I order every time, but this time the special sounded so good that I strayed from my staple. Now I will really pay attention to the special list.
Consistently excellent; one of my favorite restaurants.
Loved it....felt like I stepped back in time.cozy,lovely...
My wife decided she wanted us to go to a restaurant that we had not been to before. This was an New York/Jersey setting right out of a Soprano's movie. It was dark and romantic with a 50's Frank Sinatra theme. There was a small lounge with a live singer and piano player. It's located downtown La Jolla on the first floor of a boutique hotel. There were hotel guests and locals of all ages drinking and singing along. The italian food was very good and the service was impeccable. I'm sure that we will go again.
Everything was very nice. As always.
Unfortunately my fish, halibut ,was over cooked.
The worse it can happen to fish.
I didn't complain, because we were entertaining, and we picked the place.
First time at this restaurant...checked it out in Yelp and since it had 4+ stars and the reviews were positive decided to take my wife there for dinner. Ambiance gives you the feel of New York (I’m from Texas so what do I know about New York) but we liked it! Prompt service by receptionist with great placement at a location that was romantic (booth with a salt water aquarium close by). Manny our waiter was top notch and gave us suggestions and he didn’t steer us wrong..I had linguini frutti di mare and my wife the chicken piccata and both were excellent, dessert of cheesecake and a superb Manhattan met our expectations. Service from Manny and the wonderful guy who was bussing tables, filling drinks, serving was top notch. Will go back!
As always the experience was great. The food, service and ambience always make us gone back.
Good food, Great place for a romantic dinner, only thing missing was the live jazz which would have made it just perfect.
What a wonderful evening in this perfect old-school blend of Italian and chophouse menus. From the dim light and warm lighting to the piano bar and the gallery of beautiful strangers, this was a wholly enjoyable experience. The veal and halibut was well prepared, the wines were excellent, and the service was attentive without hovering. We look forward to returning!
We've been there dozens of times, and the Italian food is always outstanding. Reminiscent of an Italian New York steak house. Pasta dishes excellent as well.
The food was incredibly overpriced for the quality. The veal we ordered was hot on the outside and cold in the middle, with a partially mented slab of cheese on top, which lead us to believe that it was microwaved. My salmon was overlooked and dry. We paid an exponential amount of money for food that was below subpar. We will not eat here again and will not recommend this place to anyone.
The have great seating and outstanding service. The steaks are the best in town!
We had a great dinner. Food was delicious. Service was excellent.
This is a wonderful restaurant with terrific Italian food served by competent waiters. I had a veal chop, and it was tasty, to say the least. The Caesar's salad was excellent. There is plenty of parking on the street. I liked the decor of the restaurant. The waiters wear tuxedos. My wife had a veal dish also which was delicious. There is a large wine list.
Food is amazing. Wish the service would be better to make it an even better overall experience.
Perfect for intimate suppers and evenings! Favorites include caesar salad, cannelloni and veal milanese!
I have been eating here for over 20 years because the food is outstanding. The service is just average at best but the food makes up for it.
I loved everything about this place! Went on a Wednesday to hear a live Sinatra singer, the volume was
Enjoyable . Good food, service and atmosphere.
Manhattan of La Jolla is a hidden gem! From the warm feel that you get when you first walk in to the top notch customer service. The food is outstanding! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!
This restaurant is a great example of an old school New York steakhouse in California. That means the fish entrees are just as good as the steaks and pasta. You can’t go wrong here whatever you chose, but some of my favorites are the eggplant componata to start with and the steak Florentine to follow up.
It was our first dining experience at the Manhattan.
My wife had been searching for a restaurant that served Cherries Jubilee. We were thrilled to finally locate a place that not only knew about this delicious desert but had all the ingredients.
The special of the evening was a hit but the highlight of the night was the Cherries Jubilee that was prepared right at our table.
Our waiter Jose was knowledgeable and friendly.
It’s refreshing to finally have a place that has ambiance but still serves class.
Todo muy rico y muy bien atendidos
Great ambiance and service. We were given a free dessert and congratulated on our anniversary. It was a great old-school experience.
great food, great staff, very enjoyable. would recommend to anyone.
We were seated at a strange table that looked towards all the other diners which was awkward. We were not given menus. A waiter eventually asked if we would like a drink - no offer of menu's and he had to describe the beers on offer. Said beer arrived and still no menus after finishing the beer and 45 minutes later we had to ask for dinner menus. We ordered after being there an hour. The cannelloni was good. The lobster ravioli had no discernable lobster and was overpowered by garlic. The Veal Fiorentina( the signature dish) was overcooked and overrated. The Halibut was excellent. The piano bar added an ambiance and as it was my birthday a tiramisu was offered for dessert which was a nice touch, thank you. The evening, however, had already disappointed by the lack of service and uneven food in an establishment where the reviews and prices seemed to indicate it was amongst the best...
Very male oriented restaurant with all male servers. I, a female, made the reservation using Open Table under a female name, however, upon entering the restaurant, my husband was greeted and shown the table. They even addressed my husband and not myself. The only women in the restaurant was at the entrance desk. I mention ‘all male’ servers, because they make the big tips. Very ‘old school’ old La Jolla crowd. Our friends took us to this restaurant because of the excellent authentic food. I was served a good Manhattan cocktail, however, the bartender used a marichino cherry and not the traditional Italian cherry. Overall, I would never return because I do not see any diversity in the staff. I refuse to dine at any restaurant that doesn’t offer both males and females the same income opportunity.
Traditional, white table cloth ambiance. Service (our waiter whose name was Manny) was excellent!!! He was very accommodating to our small group which was celebrating a friend's special birthday. He went out of his way to make sure everything was perfect for us. The food was quite good and could please a wide variety of diets, from steak lovers to vegans. We enjoyed our time there very much.
The food was delicious. The service was a bit haphazard. We had to send a drink back twice and our salad came exactly as we had NOT ordered it. So it also went back to the kitchen for a remake. And also took 3 times to get it right.
Great service from Beige the bartender and the piano player was entertaining
Wonderful as always
I was expecting great food especially for the prices- it was just "good". The Ceasar salad was very disappointing- most of the lettuce wilted and faded- not crisp and green like it should be- the dressing ,made at the table, was a real letdown. The wine list was, at best, just fair . The entrees were good and the wait staff accommodating but all in all not the great dining experience I had hoped for.
Fabulous food and the service paid attention to the details
A favorite of ours. Old world charm and excellent food
The food at this restaurant is amazing. I have been coming here for over 20 years because of how great the food is. The service could be a lot better.
Just average food, good service.
Loved the Italian food and wine and piano bar!
I felt like I was stepping back in time with the beautiful art on the brick walls, authentic Italian cuisine and charming piano bar.
