Manhattan of La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
A wonderful traditional New York City style restaurant with Italian influences in downtown La Jolla. This restaurant offers a very good, traditional, old-fashioned, great service, white tablecloth dining experience. They have excellent cocktails, table-side Caesar salad and excellent food. The cannelloni, and lobster ravioli are stand-out offerings on the pasta menu, and there are great options for fish, veal, steaks, etc. I went there again for the cannelloni, which I love. Service is excellent - dark suit for the head waiter and black and white for the others.
we recently moved to la jolla and this was our first time dinning here. this place is a hidden gem. the food was top notch, they had live music and best of all was our sever Ara. His food recommendations were excellent, the service was great and best of all was his charming personality. By the time we left, people were dancing and the mood was very festive with a 40+ year old crowd. we wished we had known so we could have stayed longer. this really has the feeling of being one of our new regular spots.
Manhattan is always consistently good. TheyHave classic dishes that are well prepared with generous portions and are uniquely delicious. Their Caesar salad is the only one in San Diego or Los Angeles that is a truly authentic Caesar salad with robust taste, garlic, anchovies, and Parmesan cheese and prepared of the table
This is one wonderful restaurant. It has been around for many, many years and the quality of food is as good as ever. They have some of the best bartenders that make you feel right at home. Also have a piano bar that was being enjoyed by many before and after their meal. The food is excellent and the staff very attentive. We were celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary and were treated so well. I would recommend this as a quiet, intimate moment or for a family gathering; they have room to make both happen and everything in between. We will be back the next time we are back in San Diego.
This was a special occasion and we were treated anything but special. The bartender was extremely rude. The hostess knew from the reservation and acknowledged it was a special occasion, and not one thing was done to make us feel special. I had requested a special booth, and they asked us if we would like a table instead... etc. It was the only restaurant that did nothing for our anniversary out of the 5 restaurants we dined at this weekend. There are far too many other superb restaurants within walking distance that I would recommend before this one. All in all, extremely disappointed.
Manhattan does wonderful, traditional italian/NY italian cuisine just beautifully. Their cannelloni is and has been forever the best I've ever had, and that includes those in Italy. They are to die for. Service is outstanding in a cozy, elegant environment, servings are generous and flavorful, and the wine list is excellent. While I love coming here for dinner, it is also one of the best deals for lunch in town. A cannelloni lunch, coming with soup or salad, and bread will not set you back anymore than one of the fancy burger places in town and you get white linen, flowers, candles, and sweet attentive service. The only thing that cuts down on my enjoyment is that I frequently find the live music (piano bar) too loud in the evenings. Otherwise this has been a favorite of mine for nigh on to 30 years. We've done birthdays, wakes, graduations, launches and weekday lunches here for what feels like forever.
The Manhattan is always good except for Saturday night. Cesar salad made by back waiter was so harsh garlic that my husband and his friend sent it back. My friend and I ate it since we both like garlic but I tasted it all night. Shrimp scampi excellent. Even the Manhattan can have an off night.
This is a great restaurant. Old school restaurant with new york feel. We went on wednesday when they had a live opera singer that night singing frank sinatra and phantom of the opera. The food was on point amd service was great. Make sure to ask for Jose to be your server.
Manhattan has been a staple of LJ for decades and while it is bigger than before, it is still small in feel. In the Hotel Empress but does not look for feel like Hotel food. Food was good but no exceptional. Caesar salad had wilted lettuce and yellow spots. Lots of garlic in dressing. Veal Piccata and Milanese were average but desserts were better. Nice atmosphere in the back room but front room is big and noisier. Would not recommend that room.
The food reminded me of Hoboken, not so much Manhattan. And, that’s a good thing. I had the shrimp scampi appetizer, so good next time I will have it for an entree. As for the entree, Steak Sinatra, nothing but delicious! The live music was outstanding. The operatic rendition of “Amore” and some Sicilian classics would make Mandy Potemkin jealous. If you like good food, good music, good service in a traditional setting go to Manhattan.
This was our first visit to Manhattan of La Jolla, and we hope to return for many more. It was our anniversary and where most restaurants make do with a wish, these guys really made us feel special. From the hostess to waiter, to the busboys the service was outstanding. This is old school service, these folks have worked in food service for 10 to 50 years, they know how it's done. If you are in a hurry, drive through McDonalds, real service is a presentation.
The food itself is amazing! The zucchini appetizer was excellent, and I was drooling watching a waiter prepare a Caesar salad table side, at the next table( but it's for two). My husband and I had veal, and it was the best I've had in SD. The cheesecake was homemade and to die for! Throw in the Sinatra style singer on a Wednesday and you've got more fun than you can handle retro style.
My husband and I are foodies and live off Adams avenue. We just noted to each other that this is our new favorite date night restaurant! Kudos guys!
We were staying around the corner from this hidden gem of a restaurant, and wish we had more time on our visit to return. From the owners greeting us and seating us, to the head waiter, who treated us like well-regarded friends, Manhattan of La Jolla was exceptional in service. Our meals, particularly the table-side prep of the Caesar Salad to the perfectly portioned bolognese, were the gateonomic highlight of our 6 day visit to SD!
I was expecting to treat my friends to a lovely evening,
Their food was tasteless
he had a the fettuccine alfredo with chicken blah--the pasta was gluey
she had the ceasar at the table it was dripping with dressing-
i had grilled salmon salad --very mediocre
They were forced to add salt AND pepper to taste
