We were staying around the corner from this hidden gem of a restaurant, and wish we had more time on our visit to return. From the owners greeting us and seating us, to the head waiter, who treated us like well-regarded friends, Manhattan of La Jolla was exceptional in service. Our meals, particularly the table-side prep of the Caesar Salad to the perfectly portioned bolognese, were the gateonomic highlight of our 6 day visit to SD!
Wonderful food, great service. One of my favorite restaurants in the country. I would suggest reservations for sure.
I was expecting to treat my friends to a lovely evening,
Their food was tasteless
he had a the fettuccine alfredo with chicken blah--the pasta was gluey
she had the ceasar at the table it was dripping with dressing-
i had grilled salmon salad --very mediocre
They were forced to add salt AND pepper to taste
Food is some of the best I have ever eaten at any restaurant. I crave some of the dishes and have to go back to eat them every so often. Love, Love, Love the food at this restaurant.
This was a first time visit and we weren't disappointed. It had an old world speakeasy feel to it, with a piano bar and low lighting. If you're seated in the piano bar area it can be a little loud, but there is another dining area. The Italian fare was excellent, both the Veal Saltimbocca and the Prawns Diablo were excellent, and the Lobster Bisque was the best ever. I think Manhattan is a great value and a fun place to dine.
We will be back, great place. Food was fabulous and price was good.
Like out of a 40's movie on Turner Movie Classics. Somebody transported this jewel of an old school Italian joint from NYC way back in the day to current day La Jolla. I don't even drink but I felt compelled to order a real cocktail from our tuxedod waiter. Caesar salad tossed fresh table-side, fresh red sauce like my childhood Italian friends' grandmothers would simmer all Sunday, fresh bread with real crust and authentic pastas and mains. I was close to blended knee.
Lively bar scene with dashing gents in matching jacket and pocket squares singing along to the local pianist seranading their timelessly coifed brides of 40 years.
Old school service also never goes out of style. Waitstaff and owner were eager to engage in conversation. They truly love this place and their place in it.
If you're looking for a glimpse into the future of dining by going back in time I'd love for you to share the experience I enjoyed.
The best thing about Manhattan is the bar, ambience and service. Having a Caesar salad prepared tableside was nice. The food is fine but not exceptional. Overall we enjoyed it.
Enjoyed a wonderful meal at Manhattan's.....excellent food. Service was not rushed allowing us to enjoy the evening.
Everything was perfect, amvionce, hors d'oeuvres the meal was just about to arrive and in comes a couple with their dog! I am an animal lover but there has to be a line somewhere! This is a upscale restraunt not a poptail scene!
All in all though super!
East Coast meets West Coast - Old school, tux-laden waiters.
Attentive service - good solid food and wine. Piano player while you eat.
Fun dining - would return - very unique La Jolla dining experience.
Fabulous place. We love old school steakhouses with live music and it doesn't get any better than Manhattan La Jolla. The hostess is professional, attentive, and helpful; the service is five star, and you can't beat the live music performed by Tad. Places like this are rare. This is our favorite spot in San Diego. Highly recommend for a date night, night out with friends/family, business meals, and much more.
Manhattan of La Jolla provides elegant cuisine, service and ambiance from a bygone era that must be experienced to be appreciated--and is from setting foot in the door!
Manhattan of La Jolla is one of my favorite restaurants!👍🏻
The food is always delicious (with generous portions), the service is always outstanding, and the entertainment (especially Roman Palacios) is always marvelous!!
Thank you, Nancy and Bill!!😊
We have been going to The Manhatten in LaJolla for more then 30 years. The food is terrific and a great selection, the service is impeccable, Caesar Salads table-side is a good touch and the waiters extra helpful and fun. We always take our out of town guests there every time we have them.
I have dined there for msny years as a resident of La Jolla. It ismy overall favorite restaurant in La Jolla. The entire staff is attentive and well-groomed. It is comparable to a Chicago, New York or Boston steakhouse with an ItalIan menu as well. Their steaks are every bit as good as Morton's, Flemmings, or Donovan's. Caesar salad is prepared at tableside and their desserts are tempting.
Hadn't been to Manhattan for 25 years and used to love the place. Had an impromptu reunion, of sorts, and so glad I did! Food was great! Service and Piano player were excellent! Really glad we went.
Service was excellent- would give more stars than 5 if I could, and I wish I could remember our server's name to give credit where it's due! The food was amazing and so fresh! We had two different appetizers, two different entrees and each had dessert (We were visiting from out of state and celebrating a birthday so we "went big"). Every single dish was amazing and it was definitely the best food we had while in town for 6 days. Thanks Manhattan!!!
Pleasantly surprised and amazed by the atmosphere, food and service. This is a hidden gem in LaJolla, a classic steakhouse with an Italian flair. I would prefer this place over the bigger name steakhouses.
Thanks to the owners, this restaurant has been around for over 30 years! No nonsense Italian. The Lobster Manhattan speaks for itself. And the wine list is extensive and full proof! Go for the food and service, stay for the live music!
Lovely place, with great service and nicely prepared food!
It is a bit darker than expected bit a definite sinatra feel
High expectations, poor performance. We have eaten at Manhattan a few times before and the good experiences. This time was different. My wife and I split orders of Veal Picatta and Fettuccine Alfredo, and both dishes were subpar. The veal was dry and flavorless, and the Fettuccine Alfredo sauce was all butter and very little cream (and flavor). We asked for additional sauce to see if that would help and we got was a tepid, milky, watery concoction that anyone would be ashamed to call Alfredo Sauce. The normally consistent food was awful and we were very disappointed. We will probably go back to the restaurant again but it will be awhile.
I've been coming here since I was 2 years old for every birthday dinner. It has remained my favorite Italian restaurant in the world! The gnocchi is the best I've ever had. I've tried gnocchi all around the world, but theirs is just so good. They really know how to make amazing Italian food. And Nancy is always so sweet!
It was a very good Italian restaurant with great service ! The food was really authentic.
Outstanding, food , service, atmosphere some of the in la jolla cove, can't wait to return.
We were seated before our waiter was available, as soon as we arrived. Other than a 15 minute wait for menus service was fantastic, and the food was out of this world. The restaurant has a perfect authentic old-style Italian ambiance-dark, cozy and very inviting. Our kids love good food, and fine dining. The bread was perfect-warm, with a sharp crust but very soft in the inside and delicious. Our meals -shrimp scampi, spaghetti bologna, the manhattan trio, and fettuccini alfredo were spot on. For dessert the tiramisu was perfect. We also loved the cheesecake and lava cake.
The food is consistently good. Prosciutto wrapped melon and eggplant rolotini was just right for dinner on the early side. See you all again.
Always great seeing Dirk who took great care of us. Nancy is one of the best at making sure your table is perfect even if you book on line. Great wine and cannelloni is the best anywhere! Amazing entertainment, Tad is a rare talent and can play anything perfectly!
Great restaurant, great food and great service. We loved the very authentic Italian food and wine. Could not have been better...!!!
We showed up early to our reservations, when the time came they allowed us to chose where we wanted to be seated. Prompt service and excellent food. Complimentary Birthday Cheesecake (which was yummy!). All around great experience.
Found this restaurant thru Instagram with their post of one of many booths with brick walls and Marylin Monroe art. Had a double date birthday dinner on a weekday. The lighting is low and romantic. Piano was being played live. The food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Thank you for a pleasant evening experience to the servers and staff at Manhattan of La Jolla
Wonderful food but getting loud at times. Waiters either could not hear us or did not pay attention.
Manhattan in La Jolla has been my “go to” place since the 1980s. We took our friends on Wednesday to enjoy singer Roman Palacios and pianist Tommy Ganon. It was a wonderful evening. My veal chop was magnificent.
If you're looking for fine Italian cuisine in up-scale New York style atmosphere, this is the place!
First time diners and was our anniversary. We were treated with great service and the food was amazing . Wednesday night music and singer was fantastic.
Upscale steak/seafood. That said, i wish there was a dress code. Seating directly in front of me was a couple with a teenager who were appropriately dressed for Petco Park. They were loud and could be heard throughou the bacj dining room which really spoiled our dinner. Our server, a nice hispanic gentleman who has been there for 25 years, but didn't get his name was wonderful. My only complaint, aside from that couple in front of us, was that i had difficulty enjoying ny ceasar salad. I don't especially like the dark green leaves in my ceasar. I normally cut off these are use only the hearts of romaine. I found that interesting for an upscale restaurant. For such a highly rated restaurant i expect close to perfection.
We were a party of 10 and had a reservation. Our table was waiting for us which was very nice. Music was very nice too, Wednesday night. The rest was just HORRIBLE. It took 45 for someone to acknowledge us, and say we'll be right with you, not exaggerating either. It took 1 1/2 hrs to bring our drinks. We had to ask for a drink menu, then a food menu. Poor waiter he was frazzled. He mentioned that they were short one waiter, but c'mon. A fancy restaurant, when you are down one employee your are still able to function. How about the hostess brings menus instead of just standing there. Manager and hostess were just talking for about 20 minutes (we were right next to them so we could hear their personal conversation) while the poor waiter was literally running to get out drinks and menus. Now the food....ridiculously bad. Olive garden has better food. Gnocchi was bad, pasta with filet mignon was nasty, steak was ok. Nothing was wow. Desserts were ok, nothing worth the $1,000 bill we paid.
The live music was a perfect touch to the even more perfect Veal Chop Florentina, one of the best i have had. The bartender makes a very good Manhattan, obviously.
Wow! Amazing experience. Probably one of the best dining experiences we have "ever" had. Waiter was amazing, food was absolutely perfect. Seriously an awesome time there. Don't think about this - just do it! No disappointments.......5 stars all the way around.
