Manhattan of La Jolla Ratings and Reviews
Like out of a 40's movie on Turner Movie Classics. Somebody transported this jewel of an old school Italian joint from NYC way back in the day to current day La Jolla. I don't even drink but I felt compelled to order a real cocktail from our tuxedod waiter. Caesar salad tossed fresh table-side, fresh red sauce like my childhood Italian friends' grandmothers would simmer all Sunday, fresh bread with real crust and authentic pastas and mains. I was close to blended knee.
Lively bar scene with dashing gents in matching jacket and pocket squares singing along to the local pianist seranading their timelessly coifed brides of 40 years.
Old school service also never goes out of style. Waitstaff and owner were eager to engage in conversation. They truly love this place and their place in it.
If you're looking for a glimpse into the future of dining by going back in time I'd love for you to share the experience I enjoyed.
Fabulous place. We love old school steakhouses with live music and it doesn't get any better than Manhattan La Jolla. The hostess is professional, attentive, and helpful; the service is five star, and you can't beat the live music performed by Tad. Places like this are rare. This is our favorite spot in San Diego. Highly recommend for a date night, night out with friends/family, business meals, and much more.
We have been going to The Manhatten in LaJolla for more then 30 years. The food is terrific and a great selection, the service is impeccable, Caesar Salads table-side is a good touch and the waiters extra helpful and fun. We always take our out of town guests there every time we have them.
I have dined there for msny years as a resident of La Jolla. It ismy overall favorite restaurant in La Jolla. The entire staff is attentive and well-groomed. It is comparable to a Chicago, New York or Boston steakhouse with an ItalIan menu as well. Their steaks are every bit as good as Morton's, Flemmings, or Donovan's. Caesar salad is prepared at tableside and their desserts are tempting.
Service was excellent- would give more stars than 5 if I could, and I wish I could remember our server's name to give credit where it's due! The food was amazing and so fresh! We had two different appetizers, two different entrees and each had dessert (We were visiting from out of state and celebrating a birthday so we "went big"). Every single dish was amazing and it was definitely the best food we had while in town for 6 days. Thanks Manhattan!!!
High expectations, poor performance. We have eaten at Manhattan a few times before and the good experiences. This time was different. My wife and I split orders of Veal Picatta and Fettuccine Alfredo, and both dishes were subpar. The veal was dry and flavorless, and the Fettuccine Alfredo sauce was all butter and very little cream (and flavor). We asked for additional sauce to see if that would help and we got was a tepid, milky, watery concoction that anyone would be ashamed to call Alfredo Sauce. The normally consistent food was awful and we were very disappointed. We will probably go back to the restaurant again but it will be awhile.
I've been coming here since I was 2 years old for every birthday dinner. It has remained my favorite Italian restaurant in the world! The gnocchi is the best I've ever had. I've tried gnocchi all around the world, but theirs is just so good. They really know how to make amazing Italian food. And Nancy is always so sweet!
We were seated before our waiter was available, as soon as we arrived. Other than a 15 minute wait for menus service was fantastic, and the food was out of this world. The restaurant has a perfect authentic old-style Italian ambiance-dark, cozy and very inviting. Our kids love good food, and fine dining. The bread was perfect-warm, with a sharp crust but very soft in the inside and delicious. Our meals -shrimp scampi, spaghetti bologna, the manhattan trio, and fettuccini alfredo were spot on. For dessert the tiramisu was perfect. We also loved the cheesecake and lava cake.
Always great seeing Dirk who took great care of us. Nancy is one of the best at making sure your table is perfect even if you book on line. Great wine and cannelloni is the best anywhere! Amazing entertainment, Tad is a rare talent and can play anything perfectly!
Found this restaurant thru Instagram with their post of one of many booths with brick walls and Marylin Monroe art. Had a double date birthday dinner on a weekday. The lighting is low and romantic. Piano was being played live. The food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Thank you for a pleasant evening experience to the servers and staff at Manhattan of La Jolla
Upscale steak/seafood. That said, i wish there was a dress code. Seating directly in front of me was a couple with a teenager who were appropriately dressed for Petco Park. They were loud and could be heard throughou the bacj dining room which really spoiled our dinner. Our server, a nice hispanic gentleman who has been there for 25 years, but didn't get his name was wonderful. My only complaint, aside from that couple in front of us, was that i had difficulty enjoying ny ceasar salad. I don't especially like the dark green leaves in my ceasar. I normally cut off these are use only the hearts of romaine. I found that interesting for an upscale restaurant. For such a highly rated restaurant i expect close to perfection.
We were a party of 10 and had a reservation. Our table was waiting for us which was very nice. Music was very nice too, Wednesday night. The rest was just HORRIBLE. It took 45 for someone to acknowledge us, and say we'll be right with you, not exaggerating either. It took 1 1/2 hrs to bring our drinks. We had to ask for a drink menu, then a food menu. Poor waiter he was frazzled. He mentioned that they were short one waiter, but c'mon. A fancy restaurant, when you are down one employee your are still able to function. How about the hostess brings menus instead of just standing there. Manager and hostess were just talking for about 20 minutes (we were right next to them so we could hear their personal conversation) while the poor waiter was literally running to get out drinks and menus. Now the food....ridiculously bad. Olive garden has better food. Gnocchi was bad, pasta with filet mignon was nasty, steak was ok. Nothing was wow. Desserts were ok, nothing worth the $1,000 bill we paid.
Wow! Amazing experience. Probably one of the best dining experiences we have "ever" had. Waiter was amazing, food was absolutely perfect. Seriously an awesome time there. Don't think about this - just do it! No disappointments.......5 stars all the way around.
The waiter had way too many tables to attend to. I have displeasure in the bus person asking my guests to had there plates to him. Why is ordering wine by the glass feel bad here?
If you were to check out the seat cushions you would see and feel many are in sad shape. At $50 plus per person I would not expect to wait over 15/20 mins to pay my bill while the band is on their break.
The food was tasty, the location wonderful, the greeting was good.
I found the food and ambiance to be very good. The staff was very kind but the service was very very...very slow. It was an hour and a half before we got our entrees. I understand this is not a speedy place and did not expect it to be so. However, it was close 45 minutes before the waiter took our food order. He also asked what we wanted to drink but did not produce a wine menu until I had to ask for it. I still really liked the food and wine. The wait staff was very kind. It was just a much longer evening than expected.
