Mandarin Roots Ratings and Reviews
This is a first visit to this restaurant and it was for a birthday dinner. I was not told in advance there would be a party of 60 for Amazon. There is no private dining here and instead of putting them in the bar area they were in the main dining area. It was loud when they were all seated but between dinner and dessert most of them were up mingling oblivious of the rest of us and the noise level was over the top. I realize the restaurant felt this was out of their control but it would have been nice to know in advance. The food was delicious but I can't say I would go back.
I chose this restaurant on Open Table for a date night with my husband. We were looking for something generally casual, something we had not tried before. This restaurant is not in the downtown Palo Alto scene, so it is more casual and less pretentious. While Chinese food based, it is more eclectic and the flavors are more interesting than basic Chinese. We ordered the Ahi Tuna Poke, the Chicken Moo-Shu, the Peking Duck Spring Roll, and the Hong Kong crispy noodles. We loved everything except the crispy noodle dish as we didn't enjoy the sauce. We also ordered one of the house cocktails that had sake and citrus in it but I can't remember the name. That was delicious! The noise is moderate but easy enough to have a conversation and the decor was not super fancy, just comfortable. They have a bunch of large tables, good for family gatherings, but a number of smaller tables for date night. A great find!
The food was exceptional, every dish we ordered was excellent.
Took my visiting family here for special occasion, all big foodies. They
all loved every dish.
The noise level inside is quite high, difficult to talk.
If they are serving outside, it is a better option.

Nice ambiance and friendly service. I got to taste many items as we were a 7 people group. We tried hand made pot stickers, calamari, pork belly quesadilla, and Moo-Shu for appetizers. They were all great. Teriyaki Salmon and Mongolian Beef were my favorites from the main course. Peking Duck was good as well. I didn’t like the crab as much as it was oily.
Finding parking was a pain. I would recommend there at least 10 minutes early to find parking.
Food great, service slow but very busy. Issue with Chards...first time the wine was definitely “over,” a 2008 CA Chard. sent back, was told they opened a new bottle....also over, barely drinkable. Service staff lady very nice, removed wine from bill.... Restaurant should update wine list. Food fresh, came out as it was prepared. Scallion bread, garlic noodles, crispy honey prawns all excellent! Dined 11/10/17.
Not our best visit here. The service was very slow, and the food was mediocre, except for the duck fried rice. The ribs were a little dry, despite the abundance of too hot (temperature wise) sauce, and the ginger asparagus chicken didn’t have any ginger, as far as I could tell. But the Peking duck fried rice was delicious. I especially liked the addition of the edamame.
The food was absolutely delicious with great choices. This was our third time there for dinner. Love it. Our servers were excellent with wonderful service. The other guests were so extremely loud, I was tempted to get my earplugs out of my car. Might be helpful to turn up the music to drown out the rude conversation noise. I’m not kidding. We couldn’t hear ourselves talk without yelling. Obviously a very popular place to get outstanding food. We will definitely go there again.
There were some group tables (8+ people) and family-size tables. Unfortunately the group tables are too close and one group just next to us was extremely noisy. They literally shouted for the whole dinner time.
Food was okay; a bit more pricey than other Chinese restaurant with similar quality though.
We have visited Mandarin Roots several times in the past 6 month. The food and presentation have always been outstanding. The combination of flavors and textures is astounding. While we visit from San Carlos which is relatively close I would drive an hour in 101 traffic with little complaint for this excellent dining experience.
Food was excellent. Happy Hour Menu was very good - good portion, excellent price. Service was slower side on the day I visited; however at the end the server came to apologize for the slow service which was nice. Bartender was good. Drinks were good (that's what I heard since I don't drink) Definitely recommend!
This restaurant was such a great find!! GO look at pics on Yelp. Everything was really good. Had the honey walnut shrimp, pork belly quesadilla, kalbi beef tacos and tangarine beef. Everything was fantastic. Great indoor/outdoor feel. Nice mood lighting too. Definitely going back.
Asian Fusion Food at its best. We were early, before the theater. Recommend parking on the street ( El Camino). In and out in 1.5 hrs. We had the Duck Salad, MuShu Pork and the ribs. Perfect for two. If you have the room, try the Lava Cake. The Happy Hour might be a better deal than the dinner menu.
We were blocked in by a delivery truck. I asked the hostess and server. And they said it wasn't their delivery truck. But when the driver came out 30 minutes later he was indeed delivering to mandarin roots and taking his sweet time even though he saw us waiting in the car!!!
