Food was flavorful and tasty . The ingredients are all fresh which added to the taste . The chocolate lava cake is best in the Bay Area . It is freshly baked post your order.
We had hot and sour soup, Kung Pao Chicken and Asparagus with Chicken. The soup was the right combination of flavor and spicy. The chicken in their dishes was tender and carried the sauce very well. The Brown Rice was unusual and very, very good. We got there at 8:00 on a Thursday night and it was a nice small crowd.
I am keeping track of what I had in my phone and will build a longer list of favorites by going back again and again.
Great food and attentive service as always!
Didn't expect such authentically delicious Chinese food in Palo Alto. Thank you!!
Excellent food and variety and reasonably priced. Great for a girls night out.
I had the soft wonton appetizer and the Hong Kong crispy noodles (hard to find). Both were fantastic. I would like to see more Hong Kong noodle options. I particularly like pork, green onion, and black bean sauce. Or a build your own!
Except for the screaming toddler in the patio area, dinner was very enjoyable. The happy hour menu allowed us to try several delicious small bites.
Great indoor and outdoor atmosphere with delicious food!
We did a gluten-free array that included walnut prawns with a white sauce that was delicious as well as drunken noodles, mushi pork and a delicious soup. Our waiter was smart and attentive. Really a great experience.
Delicious food overall. We had the Dragon Prawns, Clay Pot Chicken, and the fried calamari to start. All of the dishes were excellent. The service was good too. The ambiance is nice.
Food quality was not good- the spring rolls were froZen the first time around ; sevivce was slow and 2 out of 4 deserts were not being served. We had a special evening planned but didn’t turn out that way
Great plans for business lunch. You can have a conversation at the table and be heard.
Waited 1/2 hr for reservation to be seated
otherwise food was good, noise loud
We took advantage of their Happy Hour. Great value along with great appetizers.
Great service and exceptional food...always an “A” place for dinner, family, friends and business
The Char Siu sea bass is always divine here, and the Peking duck is unlike anything I've ever had. The duck is cooked in such a way that the skin is super crisp and most of the fat is rendered. So delicious!
Everything is perfect except the reserved seat is very close to the door and it feels we are sitting in the way of other guests coming in and leaving. Not very comfortable. I reserved the table couple days ago and didn’t expect they reserve a table which kind block other people way. A little awkward:(
I came to Mandarin Roots on the recommendation of a food blogger. So happy I came! As an individual with two major food allergies, the MR staff was very understanding and happily fulfilled my request. The food was exactly what I remember Chinese food to taste like. I left very full and very happy. I will definitely be returning...soon.
Flavors are clear and good. Nice to eat on the patio in good weather. Service is unobtrusive, food comes quickly. Excellent hot-and-sour soup, crispy sweet prawns with honeyed walnuts, excellent ginger/garlic chicken.
One favorite dish is online, but no longer available in the restaurant. They should consider updating their website so not to potentially mislead people
I've been here twice - both times to sync with friends. I love the food here. Fish is cooked "correctly," meaning that it is just done, not over-cooked, which is typical in America. Spectacular. This last time, we did family style, so we are able to sample a lot of stuff - not one dud. Creative, high-ish end Asian food. I plan on being a regular here.
This restaurant would be much better if they were to stop sweetening so many dishes. For instance, the eggplant entree and the firecracker shrimp were so sweet they were inedible. Other dishes, such as the lotus root entree, string beans, and the chow mein, we’re unsweetened and quite delicious. I also recommend placing condiments (such as chili paste) on the table as is commonly done.
First time trying. Food was wonderful. Moo chu veggie was excellent, as was the honey walnut shrimp, orange beef, and the fried rice. Service was good, they were attentive but not overly so. We will definitely be back.
The food was not good, undercooked and over salted
Great flavors! Loved all the noodle dishes. Pork belly sliders were exceptional!
Mandarin Roots has been a favorite of ours for several years. They went through a "down period" over the last six or so months where the food was not nearly as good. They also replaced all the waitstaff. However, the previous chef is back and the food is back to what it was. You can go there again with confidence.
Mandarin Roots is our go-to neighborhood Chinese restaurant. We have eaten there monthly for many, many years. They use excellent quality ingredients in all of their dishes, making it more expensive than your average Chinese restaurant but it is totally worth it. Every single new person we have taken there has been totally wowed by the taste and quality of their food. They also have several vegetarian and lower carb options which is great. Highly recommended!
Food and service excellent. However , the restaurant during lunch is extremely noisy. Putting some curtains to cover the glass windows should help.
I wish the restaurant menu would provide more variety dishes.
Good food. A bit loud for conversation.
Nice cocktail meni

EXTREMELY Poor service, horrible food, VERY loud TV and were out of steamed rice!!
NEVER ever going back!!
Mandarin Roots is a Chinese fine dining restaurant with a great choice of meals. We went for fried tofu, 8 grains bowl and crepes cake for dessert, all delicious. Plus the waiter was very nice to us. I recommand treating yourself with a carafe of Sangria. Great time in there!
The food was amazing the service was great! They were very patient with us. We were a group of 8 and had the perfect round table to actually all talk together. One person has a gluten allergy and two others are vegetarian. The server was knowledgeable and really guided us through a great night. Try the Peking duck and the tangerine beef. The chow main was also fantastic!!
My only negative was the noise. But it was Valentine’s Day and pretty busy. I’ll try back on a quieter day. It looks good for drinks and small plates as well.
The service and ambiance were really good. The food was good except we got the duck and it was NOT worth the $45. I would go for all th other dishes. Everything else we got was great. I would go again!
Fresh, thoughtful approach to Chinese food with an upscale feel.
The food was very good overall. Loved the Shrimp entire. The pork belly appetizer was not as good as expected. Service was not good, maybe because we had a large party. Even with that, it was poor.
We had a nice lunch at Mandarin Roots which offers healthier versions of traditional Chinese dishes. My grandson wanted Honey Walnut Prawns which was delicious and sweet without the syrupy sweet sauce which many restaurants serve with it. My other grandson wanted Orange Chicken which they prepared similar to a beef dish they offer despite it not being on their menu. It was also delicious. Overall, we enjoyed the food and experience.
A cute place for oriental food. Great service and food was delicious. Loved the milk crepe dessert, so yummy! Would definitely visit again for that! :)
