Mamma Tanino's Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
Mama Taninos is a FANTASTIC Italian restaurant in the heart of Sonoma and me and my beau's favorite place to eat. The staff is equally fabulous and the ambiance is superb. The chef and his wife are very nice and knowing me and my beau are vegetarians, have offered to make us something special if we give advance notice of when we will be coming in. I would eat there nightly if I could.
Mamma Taninos is a small family run restaurant that continues to excel in varied menu selections and preparation of all items. Recent visits I had osso buco which was excellent and swordfish that melted in my mouth. The whole seabass, when available as a special, is the best in Sonoma. The pastas are all as good as they sound on the menu. We try to go once a week or sometimes twice when we know we just want something delicious.
Relatively traditional Italian food, but done with a somewhat lighter touch that really elevates pretty much every dish. Concentration of flavor is really impressive. Very nice wine list that has been given much attention -- heavy on Italian wines and some great values. Service is friendly, welcoming and helpful. A bit too "cozy" when they have a full house, but ambiance is not why you go there.
The second time we've eaten here. First time was very nice. The last time , the food was very good and the service was very good, but the noise level was off the charts, making conversation
almost impossible. The restaurant is small and the noise level is amplified ...we couldn't stay for
dessert because it was not comfortable to stay any longer...otherwise great spot!!
I feel bad writing this review because the restaurant was so nice and the service was fantastic.
That being said, I go to restaurants for the food. In this case, it was a real disappointment.
The calamari mixto was underdone (the batter wasn't fully cooked or crispy). And, I paid AQ (about $30) for a linguine pescatora that was so salty it was as if someone had accidentally poured 1/4 of a container of morton's salt in my bowl. The pasta was not handmade. Truly, one of the worst food experiences I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Will never return and do not recommend.
We visit this restaurant each year when we come to Sonoma, and just love the family atmosphere. The food is really fresh and well-prepared, the service is friendly and personal, the wine list small but wonderful. Recommend highly! Chicken or veal parmigiana are excellent, fresh salmon and sea bass both amazing.
The atmosphere was casual(not bad, just saying). The restaurant was warm, on the verge of uncomfortable. The food was edible but not anything I'd eat again. The menu was more limited than most Italian restaurants I've been to. I had veal with capers and artichokes. It was lacking flavor. Something on the plate had an odd(wondering if it was safe to eat) flavor. I didn't get ill after eating so I'm not sure where the odd flavor was coming from. Cannoli was terrible! I took 2small bites & quit. Nasty flavor. What did they put in that filling??? Maybe I don't want to know!Based on the reviews I'd read & the price for a meal I expected more. The service was good.
Although the food was delicious, I cannot, with a clear conscience, recommend the restaurant to my friends. I hadn't been to Mama Tanino's in a couple of years and thought it was time to give them another chance. Unfortunately, they still don't care enough about their customers to get their act together. They have no concept of scheduling "table turnover time" or...they just don't care! We had a reservation for 7:15p and were finally seated about 7:50p. Our order was taken about 8:10p. The appetizer and salad courses were served in a reasonable amount of time, but we waited at least 30min. for our main courses. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE! Oh, BTW, as we were finishing our salads, we were asked if we would mind moving to the table next to us so that they could use our table to help accommodate a party of 6. They did waive our corkage charge when we moved. Of course, by now the bottle of wine we brought is EMPTY because we had to open it as we were spending the 35 min. waiting for our table. We finished our dinner about 9:30p! Needless to say, really good food can take you only so far. Just to cover all bases....it is also extremely noisy. There are so many other options in Sonoma, I will be choosing one of them next time.
It was a wonderful experience. Food was delicious. Loved the atmosphere, customers hugging and kssing the waitresses good by. This is a family run restaurant and they make
you feel like family. Have never had another restaurant tell me if coming again to call in advance to order
something special and they would prepare for us. Had an enjoyable time with other customers as well, felt like home. Book reservations in advance. Limited seating.
We have enjoyed Mamma Tanino's exceptional food since they opened some 10 years ago. Chef Guitono prepares outstanding dinner choices complete with homemade desserts. His wife, Kimberly, always has a warm welcome for their guests. We will continue to enjoy this restaurant for all occasion so long as it exists. In our opinion it is the best restaurant in Sonoma!
We consider ourselves regulars at Mamma's even though we do not get there as often as we like. It is the local spot since it's in the back of a shopping center and not near the Sonoma Plaza. Kim runs the front of the house and has been a friend for years. Gaetano is the maestro in the kitchen. He finally is getting some help so he doesn't have to do everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, himself. We split the Carbonera pasta and it was super flavorful. My bride had the veal chop that was outstanding. Ditto for my swordfish. Here is the key to Mamma's: In all the years we've been going, we have never ever been disappointed--only delighted. That's hard for us to say about all the restaurants in Sonoma Valley that we've frequented. Mamma's is on a list of about 3 deep. That says it all.
